User Help

OK now I get that this is where I'm suppose to ask for help. For some reason I thought I wasn't suppose to edit the page with the picture, so I went to the last archive (not realizing that it was, well, an archive) Anyway, I set up my main page with a simple paragraph, and I came up with a question. Did I indent that (and this page) correctly? Also, I think it would be a good idea if I got adopted by you, since I have a feeling I'll be running around like a chicken without it's head without help. Thanks. Christ on Ice (talk) 17:09, August 5, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, that is the way we leave messages on talk pages. I will put the 'noob' sticker on your page (noob = new user). Having a 'protector' means that another admin will ask me to check your edits if anything goes wrong. Since everyone started as a 'noob', it can be a bit daunting to get the hang of a website like this. As you may know, Wikipedia was created in direct response to this website because many people, governments and countries couldn't understand a joke. We are keeping that proud tradition flying. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 17:20, August 5, 2013 (UTC)

Roman Empire

Hi, Thanks for taking an interest in my interest with the roman page. I agree it needs a bit of work which I would be happy to dig into however I’m as nooby as they get. I know a whole metric shit tonne of nothing about editing and when I saw the section on the legions containing only 2 sentences I thought I may as well make an attempt improving it. if I tried undertaking a whole article my heart would be there for sure but I would make every mistake possible in the attempt. On the subject of my noobdom though: how many mistakes in this simple talk page?

A few and you forgot to sign your post. Options on this is for an edit or a major re- work but as you are a noob, perhaps a great undertaking. One option would be to make a copy and create a subpages under your name. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 22:06, August 5, 2013 (UTC)

Started an article, it has ceased to exist?

Sorry it took me so long to finally start an article, I've been busy with work, plus my internet went down for over a week, and I finally got it fixed (Fucking Comcast) Anyway, so last night I started to type the opening paragraph to the Oakland Raiders article, and, of course, my internet disconnected in the middle of it. It seems that none of it saved. I thought I copied the text when I was halfway through, but apparently I didn't. So, I guess the writing is lost? Thanks. --Christ on Ice (talk) 17:13, August 21, 2013 (UTC)

I presume Romartus has stepped out "for tea." Indeed, when you open an "edit window" on an Uncyclopedia article, everything you do is captured by your local computer and Uncyclopedia plays no role until you press Preview, and does not update the encyclopedia until you press Save. If your link to Uncyclopedia goes down, Uncyclopedia does not see your changes; and indeed I can see that we have had no such article since 31-Jul-08. There is a possibility (at least with the Mozilla browser) that reconnecting and restarting Mozilla on the same URL will bring it back to the screen along with your text. But flushing the cache or typing Ctrl-F5 will surely kill it. That sucks, as it always seems harder to me to recreate a point after losing data than it was to make the point in the first place. Spıke ¬ 17:25 21-Aug-13
I have lost articles that way. It happens. Best always to save as you go along. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 23:01, August 21, 2013 (UTC)
A correction to the above: If you have Javascript enabled, you can direct Uncyclopedia to monitor your edit and do things such as make suggestions when you start to type a [[link. Spıke ¬ 13:14 25-Aug-13

New article draft.

Hello there!

Thanks for the warm welcoming before, I just wanted to ask, I have created an article describing Troll Station in Antarctica at User:ZeMacroKiller98/Troll Station (Antarctica). I was just wondering if it is suitable and meets the qualifications of being an article on Uncyclopedia. I am not sure (as I am new here of course) if this is OK or not, just wondering on what another's thoughts on this might be. On another note, if there happens to be anything that I have done wrong I sincerely apologise and it is fine by me if you happen to correct it at your will. Until then, I suppose I should just resume basic editing and tidying of articles.

Good day, sir! --ZeMacroKiller98 (talk) 12:40, August 25, 2013 (UTC)

If I may kibitz again: We do appreciate anyone who tidies up the articles. Your change to Antimatter (appending to a mention of kitten huffing that it is controversial) didn't amuse me--but the entire section (on whether Antimatter exists) is whimsical randomness without any method of being funny. If you would either make more substantial changes or delete the section entirely, it would help. At Golf, you change a place name into a list of place names. This has the problem common to many lists in Uncyclopedia (see HTBFANJS): that it tells the same joke over again (in this case, telling the reader that golf is played in places where golf can't be played). Did you notice that the first sentence now has two verbs?
On Arctic Circle, good work coding that list as a list. However, again, please take a bigger view: There is nothing terribly funny about a tedious list of neighboring countries--even though one of them is "Madonna." Another problem with lists, mentioned at HTBFANJS, is that lists like this induce our anonymous overnight editors to add other random stuff to it forever.
Troll Station is a playful article that takes real-world facts and jumbles them with Internet trolls. Very good. My main problem with this article is its name: No one will look up Troll Station in our encyclopedia. It is another case where the author makes the reader guess his punch line to read his joke. Spıke ¬ 13:17 25-Aug-13

I see, thanks for your input, SPIKE. If I don't happen to be humorous in my edits, that's fine. But I would like to see what I can do around Uncyclopedia in the long run. I'm not sure, but I have been reading plenty of articles lately and I tend to get the most humour out of them. I sometimes think to myself "I wonder how I could modify this hilarious entry" and that basically inspired me to create an account on this website. Yes, about the Troll Station article, I do tend to take reality and "jumble" it into the cyber-world like that. Well, I suppose that is my style of humour. I am willingly glad to continue being a member on Uncyclopedia and I hope to dedicate my time to this wonderful site. Thanks SPIKE, I'm off for now, farewell! --ZeMacroKiller98 (talk) 13:39, August 25, 2013 (UTC)

Hi Romartus. As a well respected member of the community for being able to handle massive articles especially on history, I ask of you a moment of your time to take a look at this please. Thanks. Video smideo

The recent changes say I uploaded a new version of the Buddy Rich youtube "file" when all I did was click on it and watch it. When did the videos from Youtube all change code and end up in the File classification? I've got quite a few pages where the video could easily be listened to while the page is read, but this new way of listing them seems to have confused that. And then this upload-everytime-one-is-played anomaly. The mind reels, and then rereels. Was it wikia who made this change, or did it occur in-house? Can it be changed back to just linking youtubes on the page? Questions questions. And did you see the other site is having a wholesale forest fire week where all you have to do to huff a page is mark it with a template, and if someone removes the template it's considered vandalism. Worse thing they ever did, Zombiebaron is tagging things three or four a minute. This site just got a whole lot better by not having to go through that ""week of a thirty-thousand red links." Aleister 23:38 30-8-'13

Well our sensible community voted against forest fires! Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 08:05, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
I will check as regards the video thing. I know there was something a few months ago as regards this issue when the logs showed a lot of video links re-loaded automatically by Wikia. It made the 'user history' a bit strange as I saw a lot of 'long gone' users appearing in the logs. Regards FFW at the Fork, I have seen the comments. UN:VFD at least requires enough votes for deletion. I know there are still some poor quality articles on both sites but a FFW is a very big hammer to crack nuts. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 08:49, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it is a Wikia thing. Many of us "a few months ago" (including Aleister, who reported it to me) were shocked to find that the history log showed us as doing things we did not do, such as uploading videos to the site. The result of that investigation was that Wikia is recodifying links to YouTube to achieve faster rendering and download of pages. They are not doing it everywhere but only as pages are newly edited. When the bot converts the article, it makes a history entry with the current time but the Uncyclopedian who originally uploaded the video. This playing fast-and-loose with the logs occurred at about the same time as the other Wikia innovation that was at least as troubling, the generic Welcome messages to which the names of random Uncyclopedians were forged.
Regarding FFW: Not for the first time I compare the events of last January to a mob of people frustrated at the bureaucracy of a large nation swimming to Cuba to find freedom. Here your work is protected by a rule (Yuck! Rules!), years in the making, that requires a net vote of 5 other Uncyclopedians, public notice, and a 24-hour stall before the fire can be set. Do we protect articles from anonymous editors, if they are featured without voting after being quasi-featured? For example, The Future. Anton (talk) Uncyclopedia United 17:24, September 9, 2013 (UTC)

UnNews:Barack Obama announces USA allies in planned Syrian war (Gnome-speakernotes listen)

I'm fixin' to narrate this. But what is "gurning"? Do you mean grinning? Spıke ¬ 20:55 9-Sep-13

No "gurning." It's British for "we can make up our own language too America!" Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 16:25, September 10, 2013 (UTC)

Well, then, the colonial syndication of this article loses something in the translation. Spıke ¬ 17:41 10-Sep-13

Well that's very hard as "gurning" is very difficult to translate into normal English. I can't really explain it's its meaning apart from to say that I love gurning. Don't you Romartus? Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 17:45, September 10, 2013 (UTC)
PS - Also why do you always use the BBC News theme tune to back your audio tracks to UnNews? Is the CNN News theme tune not good enough? Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 17:51, September 10, 2013 (UTC)

As you are not forthcoming, I will assume that I didn't lose too much meaning by changing it to "grinning" in the narration. The UnNews Audio documentation includes the clip I use (though I have appended TeleTypes), which it simply calls "UnNews British Theme." My UnNews Sports narrations (there is one linked to on the main page) use a re-cut of Pennant Fever by James Newton Howard. Spıke ¬ 20:00 10-Sep-13

Oh just thought you were socialist enough to admit that I government controlled and funded media system is actually quite good. Yeah as you might have gathered "to gurn" is an extremely complex verb. Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 20:13, September 10, 2013 (UTC)
Gurning is to pull a funny or twisted face for comic effect. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 06:08, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

At least someone is in with a translation! "Gurning" would have lost even more, delivered in an American accent in a nation where the word is not in the dictionary--as bad as mixing national styles in the text of an article. It seems this final joke has to be taken in connection with the illustration in the UnNews. The article may have been a bad choice for narration by a Yank, but I have just converted from Sound Impression on Win95 to Audacity on a tablet, and it is making narration (and to the point, post-editing) very simple.

On this shore, the joke remains very different. Peace-nik Obama threatens war with Syria, but only if a chemical attack happens, and we know it won't. Then it does, and John Kerry promises an "unbelievably short" attack but says a remedy would be for Syria to renounce its nerve gas (and go back to machine-gunning the children), and we know that won't happen either. Then Putin says it will all happen, if the USA will only conduct a total strategic retreat from the region. Be careful what you wish for.... Spıke ¬ 12:26 11-Sep-13

On tis [sic.] shore we are very much split in decision. Personally I believe that it will get us nowhere firing missiles in however many want Britain to act independently from US in a time of war and deal a decisive blow now before USA does! I hope to have blunted the serious commentary by jumbling all this with another current news story of dual political defeat for the Pervert Community, at UnNews:Putin runs for New York comptroller. Audio to be uploaded some time today. Spıke ¬ 14:27 12-Sep-13

That's good but you know, we could do with a Kerry biog seeing that red link--LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 19:45, September 12, 2013 (UTC)

I don't believe I am impartial enough to do this. But then again, that is where we started with Paul Ryan, isn't it?! Spıke ¬ 22:38 12-Sep-13

I was thinking of a fake Irish connection. When I first heard about John Kerry, I thought he was of an Irish background - like the Kennedys - but apparently the name is an anglicised German surname. There is also Jane Fonda and he looks he has a horse in the family tree somewhere. Kerry also sounds to me a bit pompous in his speaking, as if he is measuring out each word for effect. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 08:43, September 13, 2013 (UTC)

Pompous? John Kerry? "Reporting For Duty"? What an understatement. I could not even mention his name in the Audio without a little bit of imitation. Spıke ¬ 14:16 13-Sep-13

Romartus, I was following that page and saw how the author kept on adding content to it after Simsie placed the ICU on it. Do you think that the page has not improved since that moment? Anton (talk) Uncyclopedia United 11:58, September 13, 2013 (UTC)

When you add text, the date changes on an ICU but if nothing happens for 7 days, then it will appear on a list of articles that have expired ICUS. I don't mind reviving it but needs someone else to work on it. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 14:00, September 13, 2013 (UTC)
No, that's true of {{Construction}} and {{Fix}}. On {{ICU}}, the tagger types five tildes, which turn into a timestamp (without signature), and that isn't bumped on every edit. The former two tags are to ensure that the author doesn't abandon a page; ICU requires affirmative improvement. I use ICU because it's easier (with fix=) to specify exactly what the article needs; also because I like using cattle prods on Anon. Spıke ¬ 14:16 13-Sep-13
