edit Welcome to Uncyclopedia

Spike the Dog (06b)

Spike is a grumpy old dog. You can stroke his fur, or you can be smitten by his stick. It is up to you.

Hello, PJD, and welcome to Uncyclopedia. This is a wiki (a collection of pages anyone can edit). Words in blue are "links" and can be clicked to take you to another page. This wiki is for comedy. It pretends it's Wikipedia, but we make people laugh, not bore them. If you aren't interested in a fake encyclopedia but in writing fake news stories, we have UnNews, and there are other projects for scripts, lyrics, how-to guides, and so on.

What you can do

You can create your own article. For starters, create it under your own name; for example, User:PJD/Bedbug. (The red instead of blue is a link to a page that doesn't yet exist.) We have a list of articles that need to be created. You can help without writing articles; just read articles and, if you see an improvement in writing or in comedy, jump in and edit it. In fact, you can help without writing at all, such as organizing, watching for vandals, or even greeting other new users.

What you need

To write articles, you need a sense of humor and an ability to write good English. We all have strengths and weaknesses and you can get help in any area. But everyone needs an ability to work with other people. Be polite, positive, and helpful toward others, and assume others are doing the same toward you.

What to read

Here are some pages that might help you:

For personal help
  • The administrators are willing to help you, and several Uncyclopedians are willing to adopt you.
  • I will watch this page for a while and will know if you edit it. Afterward, you can contact me on my own talk page.
  • If you've written an article, we have a Proofreading service where someone will correct your mistakes, and a review process where an experienced Uncyclopedian will read your article and suggest improvements.
How to post to talk pages

Please follow these general rules:

  • Add comments at the end of a talk page so people notice them.
  • Start your paragraphs with one or more : characters to indent them and set them off from other people's posts.
  • At the end, type ~~~~ (four tildes), which gets replaced by your user name and the current date and time.
  • Don't delete anyone's messages. In case of any controversy, we depend on an accurate record of what was written. You may disavow your remarks by striking them through like this.

I hope you enjoy it here and write a lot of funny stuff! Spıke ¬ 02:27 23-Jul-13

Thanks a lot SPIKE. I have uploaded a file (see here). Why don't you take a look and see if I can continue uploading such files. - PJD (talk) 02:32, July 23, 2013 (UTC)

You shoop that yourself? It's fine, but at the moment it's what we call an orphan. We are about writing pages that look like encyclopedia articles, so what is missing is an article to contain this. What you might do is go to UnNews and follow the directions there to write a funny "news release" on the Microsoft acquisition, in which this would be the lead illustration. You might also go to VFP and see if anyone wants to vote you honors. In general, we are more about funny prose than one-shots, whether funny photos or drive-by list items. We like pages that hang together to use a lot of ingredients to develop a comedy theme. Happy editing! Spıke ¬ 02:46 23-Jul-13

Actually I got it from facebook. I wanted to add the image the article Microsoft with a small summary at the bottom of the image. - PJD (talk) 02:49, July 23, 2013 (UTC)

If you got it from someone else's Facebook page, there's a separate problem. The website is here for us to write (and illustrate) original work. We are willing to steal photos for "fair use"--as when we took a wire-service photo of Barack Obama bowing to a Japanese leader and gave it an original, funny caption--but you ought not steal someone else's humor outright. As when people put links here to YouTube videos: This is for original creations; it's not a catalog of funny stuff that other people did elsewhere. Hope that helps! Spıke ¬ 02:59 23-Jul-13

I got it from a facebook page which itself took it from somewhere else. - PJD (talk) 03:07, July 23, 2013 (UTC)

Now you have gone and confused me! Well, whatever you do, add original funny value of your own; ideally, contribute completely original stuff. Spıke ¬ 03:17 23-Jul-13

Just tell me one thing. Can I use that file or not? Also, can I continue uploading such files from Facebook? - PJD (talk) 03:19, July 23, 2013 (UTC)
If the Facebook pictures are your own, you can use them, but if they are someone elses, Facebook pictures are generally very questionable when it comes to licensing requirements. We generally do not want pictures of unnotable people here, and the parody has to relate to the picture in some way. Sometimes pictures will be taken down for copyright reasons, but that is usually done by Wikia staff if they get a legal takedown notice or a privacy complaint. We want original content here, not just something funny that someone emailed you or sent to you on Facebook. The picture in question looks like something someone might post to 4chan and probably not your original idea, but it might work with the article. I hope this answers your question! -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 04:47, July 24, 2013 (UTC)
Yes it does. Thanks. - PJD (talk) 05:36, July 24, 2013 (UTC)

edit Peppering various sex-themed articles with canned humor from elsewhere

Hello again. As above, this website is for original comedy writing. Inserting copies of a gag photo in several articles is not original creativity nor does it help the articles achieve the author's intent. Therefore, I have undone your recent work. Sorry about that! Spıke ¬ 12:09 6-Aug-13

But let me tell you that except for the Facebook one, rest all were my original idea. Why did you remove them? Please reply. Otherwise I will undo your edits. Regards. - PJD (talk) 15:43, August 6, 2013 (UTC)
OK I got an alert on this from SPIKE. Adding the same picture to different articles just because they mention cock or penis etc is a bit like adding a pseudo template. It isn't encouraged. You could create a category and add it that way to an article but not the same image. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 17:14, August 6, 2013 (UTC)
I understand what you are trying to say but removing it from all the articles is not encouraging. At least some articles deserved it. Please reply. Regards and have a good day. - PJD (talk) 00:24, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
For an image to work well with an article, it has to have a good original caption. This caption should be different for each instance in which it is used. Otherwise, it just becomes a meme, and this wiki is not one that focuses on memes. The same exact thing done multiple times quickly becomes an old, tiresome joke. Also, please do not revert edits of the administrators, that could earn you a ban quickly. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 00:34, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
Ok. But it could be used in at least one or two articles & it won't look like a meme too. - PJD (talk) 14:37, August 7, 2013 (UTC)

It is true that no one reading one page knows what you have done to a different page. My problem is that, instead of doing creative writing, you are just rubber-stamping photos onto pages. It is the difference between sending a personal note and sending an unsigned greeting card. Please try your hand at writing! Spıke ¬ 14:55 7-Aug-13

That is my main problem. I am bad at writing funny things. So I thought that let me do something funny with pictures. That was the main reason why I created an account here. Otherwise, I would have been well of at Wikipedia. - PJD (talk) 15:10, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
We do what we can to explain the process of writing funny stuff in How To Be Funny And Not Just Stupid. Beyond that, what you might do is invite another Uncyclopedian to do a joint project. ScottPat and Anton199 most recently did so. The process of discussing with someone else what might be funny to them provides vital feedback that one doesn't get by just pasting stuff onto pages that is supposed to be funny by itself. edit Sorry for the USP

I am sorry but the new format of the UnSignpost makes the content box and the edit buttons of the talk page disappear. Therefore, I am removing it for a while and will bring it back when these issues are fixed. But you can still read this issue at UnSignpost/20130810. Thank you for your patience! Anton (talk) Uncyclopedia United 11:40, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

No problem. Regards. - PJD (talk) 11:13, August 14, 2013 (UTC)

edit Blue

Your reassertion of an edit here asks in the summary why Newman66 reverted you, and I will ask him to do so in the future. However, I agree with his revert:

  • Mr. T has nothing to do with Blue, and you have not connected the two. Your edit seems to assume that a meme like Mr. T will be funny by itself, but writers need to do the additional work of making a connection.
  • "told this" sounds not quite English; "said this" would have been better.
  • That is not how quotations are done anyway; we use {{Q}}.
  • Please read UNQUOTE to see what we hope to achieve through quotations in articles.

Sorry about that! Spıke ¬ 15:50 22-Oct-13

That's for the same reason as I reverted. Newman66 Visit my table here! Contributions My works 21:37, October 22, 2013 (UTC)
