Now that I'm officially an admin, I want to thank you for pimping me. I don't feel any different, and that's bothering me... and I have dreams where I'm cursing you for something... but life otherwise is normal. Zimbuddha Rev. Zim (Talk) Get saved! 16:12, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Picture updates

I uploaded a picture for Intelligent Design for Dummies in Unbooks, and added it to the page. Then I decided to edit the pic some more and re-uploaded it. Same name, but still not showing new version on the page. Will it show at some point, or do I need to add something else? Also, where do I find out how to get this – User:Gramlin/Sig – to work for me? Do I need to make a page? Ta very much.

Since Mhaille does not seem to be around at the moment, I will do him the favour of answering this for you. The new image you uploaded might not be showing up because your computer is still displaying the cached version. Try hitting 'refresh' on your browser a couple of times. If that doesn't work, try uploading the image again. As for your sig, follow the instructions here and everything should be fine. -- Hindleyite 11:09, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

A couple of questions

First, even though I am registered and logged in, I can't move a page. I'm not sure if this is a mistake, of if it is just a joke I don't get. (There are a lot of those.)

There seems to be a general tendency to instantly huff any very short contribution, but sometimes a short contribution is funnier than a long contribution, expecially if it is a link from a longer article. And even more especially the short article is funnier than the longer article if the longer article is only longer because a few funny bits have been stretched to an unfunny length to avoid getting huffed. Any advice?

And, finally, it seems that huffed contributions even disappear from "my contributions". Is this wise? Even more important, is it funny?

"Signed" Anxious Rick Wood 13:24, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Dear Anxious, not sure why you can't move a page, will ask in IRC. With regards to the length vs humour debate, the reason that Uncyclopedia was set up was to be a spoof of Wikipedia, hence the preference for encyclopedic style articles. You are right, that a lot of short contributions get the instahuff treatment, though thats not always the case. If a shorter article looks like it has a great humour value and could possibly be expanded it usually gets the NRV tag, giving it seven days grace to grow/improve.
Did you have a specific article in mind that has had the instahuff treatment? -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)

I did, but the person who huffed it kindly gave me a chance to expand it. On the other hand, this article: sandwich theorem seems to me about the right length. Wikipedia also has a number of very short mathematics articles. I know, because I've written some of them. Rick Wood 22:26, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Tis only my opinion, but the article could do with a related diagramatic image to augment it, as well as some expansion, a history of the theorem, how it replaced the earlier theorems, could build up into a decent sized little article. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)

I not only took your advice, but I entered the result in the Poo Lit contest. Rick Wood 15:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yea, I'm logged in and can't move a page either.

--The Big Bad Oyster 17:14, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

did you delete Mark Fifer article? it's humor

Hi. Mainly because he is a non-notable person, and therefore the article is against our Vanity Policy. Its nothing personal, just not what Uncyclopedia is about. Did you get a welcome note when you signed up for an account with lots of useful guides to contributing? -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)

Poo Lit Surprise

I recently joined uncyclopedia and wrote an article on Rick Mercer less than a week ago without realizing that the contest was on. The article has already been added to the main site, but is it still eligible for the contest? ~Sunstar

Moved a copy to User:Sunstar/Rick_Mercer for you to use, noticed that you already have one article in the Best Article by a n00b category, feel free to add it to one of the other ones (as you can only have one entry per category). -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)

Contents question

Right. So. Yours is the name on my talk page, so I guess you're who I should be asking the following of. We all know that a 'Contents Page' just magically appears on our articles when they get big enough, and that no trace of the thing appears in the edit screen, right? My question is this: how do I edit the contents page, if I wish to do so? I don't want to do anything fancy - I just want to change the title. Cheers. --Some Fool 06:26, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello again. I've a second question. Would you know how to put an invisible 'anchor' or something on a page. That was really unclear, hey? What I want to know is as follows: You know how when you create a heading, you also create a link titled '\random_page#Heading_title' such that when I click on something linked to this I go straight to that section? Well, what if I want to be able to similarly link to, say, a picture of lots of penguins but I don't want a title over the picture? How would I do that? cheers. --Some Fool 07:33, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

As far as I am aware the equivalent function of an "anchor" is utilised within the section headers, which also is what generates the text that appears within the Table of Contents. Whatever you add to ==Your Title== will appear in the list, and allow you to link to "Random_Page#Your_Title". I'm not sure about linking to images, but will ask around to see if anyone knows.... :) -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
Yeah, it's probably not too big a deal in that just making the smallest possible heading titled '.' works fine - and only really looks bad in as much as it changes the contents page (you only faintly notice it on the page itself). I would still really like no know how I can alter the table of contents, though (both to delete the reference to the '.' - which would more or less completely solve my second question apart from the tiny '.' about which I'm not really all that fussed) - but also 'cause I'd like to alter the title of the contents table to something other than 'Contents'. Thanks again. --Some Fool 00:37, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, if you really wanted to show off you could use the NO_TOC tag and hard code your own version, with your own words, linked using link#whatever for each one. Leave it with me and I'll have a think.... -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
So, supposing I wanted to try and hard code my own table, do you know where I'd find the code for the current table (in order to just alter it - I've never created a template or suchlike before)? Oh, and the NO_TOC tag - how would that be applied? Thanking you, --Some Fool 00:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Nice, glad you've done something with it. I'd just put it back together as it was used in a few article despite that bloody awful image. :) -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
While it failed VFD with a near-even vote before, that was with the god-awful image. This one is much better, but I still question if we really need this as a stand-alone template. Just due to the potential for template-creep, as often happens when n00bs and templates get to know each other. Also because I wasted a god damn hour editing it out of a bunch of articles when I deleted it. Any reason we couldn't insert template code into the few (currently one) articles which need this sort of warning? Bone_F_clear.png Sir Famine, Gun Petition » 12:59, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

No choice, school authorities looking over my shoulder. I had to do something instant to show them or I'd get into trouble. Not sure to be honest. I suppose it is something that we need to consider. Just so you know in the points system that we used for the voting you were only 1 point behind the winner of Best Illustrated. Its not the same as a win, but well done. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
Thanks. The Poo Lit page says, "Our four winners will receive the esteemed title of Poet Lowrate for the Order of Uncyclopedia" which answered my question. Which is moot anyway as the article I thought deserved a win didn't even place. Taste is subjective, apparently. I'm sure he'll get a feature out of it, at least.

External Links: Funny?

Is it considered kosher and/or funny to include external links to serious sites to increase my humour value? Basically, I am parodying something (homeopathy) which IMHO more-or-less parodies itself, so I think it would be kind of funny to include evidence that the crap I am making up about it isn't really made up. I hope that makes any sense. --Bbroadside 22:12, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

External links aren't a problem as long as they are not in breach of our vanity policy. The sort of external link that we usually have issue with is where the purpose of the article seems to be about spamming a link, rather than contributing an article. Good luck with the article, if you need any help, just yell! -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)

My self-nomination for adminship

I followed the directions as they were listed on the vote page. You broke my heart. But thanks for the welcome message. --Darkfred 23:08, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Nothing personal. To be honest we ended up rushing the vote page out due to unforseen circumstances. But your self nomination highlighted an important point. The main reason we are avoiding self nominations is because every Tom, Dick and Harriet who joins the site will nominate themselves if we're not careful. :)
Stick around. Given time, quality and quanity you might see your name there yet. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
Ok, I've been hanging around here for a few days now. I don't think that quality is actually what any of the editors are looking for. I have yet to define it but it appears to be drivel that is the driving element. The longer the inanity continues the less likely it seems to get deleted. For example I posted a somewhat original and somewhat funny article Tacos vs Kittens. And within minutes it was tagged with 2 thinly veiled threats of deletion, yet Calcium and Evil (which is mostly a 3 page see also list) appear to be safe from even maintenance editing. And I just chose the last 2 articles I visited. I really like Orbouros though, but I can't find it now because I can't remember how to spell it!. --Darkfred 16:27, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't view them as threats, more as guidance. The first tag really explains what to me is the more pressing issue with the article, which is that it is just a short block of text, all crushed into one paragraph. If you look at "Evil" you can see the layout is much more attractive and well encyclopedic. Ouroboros, by the way. But it looks like someone deleted it. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
Ha Ironic! The only funny article I have read yet was deleted. Perhaps you should just change the be funny guideline to be banal, then there is no sticker shock. --Darkfred 16:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah I guess the way you laid it out does look better. As for ourborous I am just bitter because I have been wanting to read it again for a couple days now and could not find it *sigh*. Its not like there was a better article to replace it with or it was wasting all your disc space. --Darkfred 16:44, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Humour is subjective at the best of times. Just had a little look at your Tacos vs Kittens article, I'd say that by expanding it, adding images and links you could make a nice little article. Have a look at the formatting of something like Voynich_Manuscript to see how I put that together. Hopefully we do have a lot of articles above the level of drivel, but remember that we are here to appeal to all tastes. Within reason. -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
