I had a horridible feeling then...

As I was typing you were archiving, and for a second I thought you'd archived my addition to Uncyclopedia:UnSignpost/Press Room. Oh, and I don't think you would be offended by my casual and completely incorrect sexist remarks there, but if I judged wrong, then I apologise. Pup 03:19 10 Feb '11

Don't worry; I'm sexist too. Hence rcmurphy's recent... er, modification of the mainpage. But then he fixed it, so I guess that's all good, too... whacky fun, eh? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 03:25, 10 February 2011
Unrelated note: I just read through a few comments on my reviews. My rationale for scoring is that 7 is VFH nomination worth, and possibly a vote for, and 8 would be worthy of a definite vote for. Above 8 is hitting the "Wow - this is spectacular" button, and 10 is leaving me speechless. Basically 8 means that there is nothing I could add, 9 means any additions would potentially reduce it's impact, and 10 is breaking new ground in one aspect or another. I rarely give greater than a 9, and I have only given a 10 once or twice since maturing as a reviewer. Pup 03:53 10 Feb '11
And if a 7 is possibly vote for, then what would it need to become a definite vote for? That's the different between judgery and reviewing, normally - judgery is just how good it is, but the good reviewing tends be more about just what needs improvement and how. When checking if the things are in-depth, a large part of it is trying to sort out if it is likely to actually be helpful - saying what's good or bad about the article is one thing, and the first step, but does the review go on to include good advice, does it cover the article as a whole, as well as get into specifics as needed? Mon, this may seem arsish, but perhaps you should reread the the guidelines if you really think those were in-depth reviews, as even the best were very cursory and could easily have included a fair amount more. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 05:08, 10 February 2011
I just re-read it. I read what it said about scoring - I score a point or two lower than I should. As for in depth the example is much briefer than most of my reviews. True, it is focused more of layout and prose than images, but by the same token I can only give advice where there is an opportunity for the advice to improve the article. I don't want you to change the results here, but I also don't want to discourage newbies from reviewing by being too hard on them. I should be more detailed for a pee, but these are halfway between being pees and just judgement reasoning, so again, don't really care. Pup 06:22 10 Feb '11
Scoring is scoring, and what you normally do aside, here you tended to say a fair bit less than the example, which actually isn't that great of an example, anyhow. But I was hoping you'd pay more attention to the bits about intermediate and advanced reviewing, namely the advices bits... and you say you have no advice to give? General rule when it comes to reviewing - if you don't have anything to say about an article, don't review it; there's no point if you can't help the person. Just nom it for VFH yourself if it's good, or leave it to someone who can say more of use if it needs it but you don't know what to say. But this was judgery, so you were doing the good ones - hence my bemusement and TKF's annoyance or whatever that was at your insistence on treating them as reviews, and hence why I had a hard time calling even the ones I did in-depth.
As for newbies, they don't have a history of doing better, so of course they'll get an easier time... but then again, they also tend not to insist that such overall vagueness really is in-depth. 'Needs more giggles', for instance, is not actually that helpful. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 06:53, 10 February 2011

All very good points, however I'M RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG!' Pup 07:47 10 Feb '11

n00b question

Thanks for the Pee Review. I still don't know how to put an article into mainspace. Not into space, that is, but I might try that as well

Lost_ESheep

yes I've moved it now, thank you (to the person who pointed out I put this question in the middle of the page, 0.000000001 nanoseconds after I noticed that)

You're welcome dear n00b. --~ MimoMimomaxusMaxus 13:56, February 11, 2011 (UTC)
Esheepy, mon, the review proper has yet to come - I was just commenting, though I can give it a full review as well if you want. Meantime, I moved the page to a subpage - you should also see the change on your watchlist, and whatnot. Basically, to move pages, there should be a tab at the top that says 'move' or 'rename' or whatnot. Same thing, but when you do, just tell it where you want it to go (Mainspace would just be 'Frederick The Great' in this case, though I moved it in your userspace for now) and decide if you want to move the talkpage, too. In this case I didn't, since that's your user talk, but sometimes you'll want to, generally when the talkpage actually does go with the article.
This may seem a bit confusing, I know, but you should get the hang of it eventually... unless you're dense like me and accidentally typo half the moves or something, but fortunately there's nothing permanent about that, either, so it doesn't matter too terribly, anyhow.
Anyway, if you have any questions, just ask, mon. Nothing is too stupid for a complete moron like me. Just ask Mimo; he'll agree what an idiot I am...
I mean... er... oh, another thing - your signature, could you be a dear and sign with 4 tildas (~~~~) in the future, instead of just typing it out, so it makes a link and generates a timestamp? Thanks. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 16:25, 11 February 2011

Hooray and stuff!

Thanks for reviewing my article. I haven't been around much lately because I discovered this new thing called a "life" (I think that's how you say it). Anyways the grammatical tips were exactly what I was looking for so thanks for that. Here's a little something for your troubles. --John Lydon 14:44, February 11, 2011 (UTC)

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen one of these. Have people forgotten about them or have my reviews just gone crap? And what on earth is with that new review template? What are the things down the side of it; bowling balls? --Black Flamingo 14:49, February 11, 2011 (UTC)
Awww, man... and here I had this nice streak going of never getting one of those things. Now you've gone and ruined it! Anyhow, glad to be of assist, although you'll probably want to mind the interpreting the news bit, too, or Spike'll be apt give you an earful, so to speak. Just some heads up.
And my sig? You dissing my sig?! Yeahallrightfine, it's weird, but Chief accused my of stealing his sig, so I up and stole it, but me being me I had to use an unpronouncable name, but I'm still Lyrithya, dammit. And stuff.
Flamingo, the template was just my response to PotR's overly colourful one. *shifty eyes* They're supposed to be bubbles, but I suck at graphics, okay? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 16:34, 11 February 2011

It was going to help me dye my hair tonight. We have some long, chemical hours ahead of us, but I am optimistic... 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 18:16, 11 February 2011
Overly colourful... Hmph. Pup 09:28 11 Feb '11
The saturation hurts my eyes. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 21:38, 11 February 2011
I just went the classic PEE review colour schema. I'd change it, but the logic behind the template was to have the better layout and the added section and subsection. Also I've never really understood why we have a misc and a final comment section. If misc is to cover the indefinable attributes of the whole, isn't that other section predominantly a rehash? Especially given my final comments used to consist of See above or just me being random and unrelated. Pup 09:53 11 Feb '11
Aye, but it's high-saturation and you used so much of it... that's where the problem comes in. But different folks use them differently, anyhow... I'unno. My template was actually supposed to be so I could reorder reviews on a whim, but I still haven't gotten around to implementing that. Whoops. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:07, 11 February 2011
Thought about that. I was thinking the best way to do it is have the sections broken into 3, so section 1 would be the header, Section 2 the score, and section 3 the comment. Something like:

header stuff
{|
|-
! {{{1}}} {{#switch:{{lc:{{{1}}}}}|humour=Comment for humour|humor|concept=comment for concept|etc.}}
! Score = {{{2}}}
|-
| colspan="2" |{{{3}}}
|-
! {{{4}}} {{#switch: blah blah blah

So when completing the review itself you just go:

{{template name
|Humour|3|My grandmother was funnier than this, and she had dementia
|Concept|9|How did nobody think of writing a comedic piece around the differences between men and women before - inspired genius
|Images|5|I really liked the picture of blah blah blah

Shouldn't be too hard to throw together. Score is still the sum of the 5 scoring sections, so {{#expr:{{{2}}}+{{{5}}}+{{{8}}}+{{{11}}}+{{{14}}}}}
Someone should get around to that one day. Pup 10:38 11 Feb '11
Aye, something like that... I just haven't gotten around to implementing anything, though. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:41, 11 February 2011

Various replies

If someone is saying that the Pee Review template will get fields more descriptive than "hscore"--so I don't have to open a separate tab to decode them during a review--that would be a big plus.

I don't see where Black Flamingo is interpreting the news. Templates are allowed to; just not UnNews.

Yes, indeed, Lyrithya, put your signature back. Don't crack wise with the navigation tools, including declarations of who said what. Spıke ¬ 02:47 12-Feb-11

Using {{Oh Dear}} on IP talk pages

Is not really practiced around here, for the sake of time waste (they don't listen) as well as the odd chance that someone un-vandal like might use it one day. ~Jewriken.GIF 09:08, February 13, 2011 (UTC)

Really? News to me, that, especially since that seemed to be a decent chunk of what it was for and it seems to even get them to stop on occasion; even if most of them don't, some may, but... I suppose when Zombiebaron winds up banning them anyway because he hates games so much, it is rather pointless, yes. What is it for, then, eh? Just users? Then why not subst the names? And are we really so hard-arsed as to have exactly two bounds with IPs, ignoring them or banning them? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 15:53, 13 February 2011
Not ignoring them at all, which is why you have {{IPjoin}}, but with questionable acts I think that telling them what they did wrong would help better than throwing the template on their pages. And with non registered users, as they will probably either use dynamic IPs or never come back, it doesn't add a lot of value. Registered users have some tendency to stay and communicate. ~Jewriken.GIF 16:12, February 13, 2011 (UTC)
Generally, they're being idiots. Hmm... actually, this gives me an idea... mind, the fact that they aren't likely to come back is reason for not putting much effort into it in of itself, and why a template still seems the best bet to me - it points out that they're being morons and shoves some useful links at them a little more directly than just the stuff at the bottom of the edit thingy, but doesn't really take any time. On the other hand, I don't even bother unless they're repeatists and nobody seems inclined to ban them, anyhow... *eyeballs Mordillo* 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 16:28, 13 February 2011
I talk to Anon I.P. on the talk page of the article he edited, especially if we are in a revert war. But the intoxicating privilege of conversation that concerns him and not the article should be reserved for people who show enough of a commitment to the place to register. A couple of times, though, I've gone to an IP talk page to beg particularly promising ones to sign up. Spıke ¬ 16:44 13-Feb-11
I usually just ignore them if it's just reverts. It's when they're going across a slew of pages adding idiocy... but Mordillo's right, the bastard. May as well drop a specific comment on them deploring their idiocy specifically... or something.
If they're just promising potential users, though, why bother? They'll just be more folks around to make me look bad if they do sign up. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 16:57, 13 February 2011
The IPs who go from page to page typing their impressions into articles at the end of paragraphs? I have no desire to reach out to them personally, and if they're doing it to troll, a personal message is a win. I'll help anyone improve their game, after he signs up. Only then do you really know whom you're talking to. And a username is an asset to protect; even the sockpuppets of our most notorious vandals eventually insist that we know who they really are. Pop up image

As for creating a template - yes. I'd like it to be an anchor as well - something about sigexpand that safari for iPhone doesn't like unless it is a link - going to the image itself (like this for example) but failing that then going to the image page (like this) would be the next best thing. Pup 10:24 13 Feb '11

Huh? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:27, 13 February 2011
my bad. Does that make more sense now? Pup 10:28 13 Feb '11
Sort of, but not really. What are we talking about, exactly? *shifty eyes* 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:29, 13 February 2011
It might have been on Al's talk page we were talking about images popping up when hovering on text using this type of thing
Gothic-purple-fairy-pink
. You mentioned creating a template for it. I think a template would be a good idea. Pup 11:13 13 Feb '11
Okay, so what's an anchor, what do you mean, 'link', and... er... eh? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 23:18, 13 February 2011
An anchor is a thing that stop a ships from moving, and it's attached to the ship using a chain of links. Or, alternatively, and anchor is where you have a section of text that is linked to another page, so that when you click that anchor it brings that page up. Basically, for what we're doing here, link and anchor are the same thing. And if you are being deliberately annoying I'm going to start abusing apostrophe's again. Pup 11:23 13 Feb '11
Wait, so why do you need a link? And what are apostrophe's? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 23:31, 13 February 2011
Apostrophes are what turn its into it's. And it needs a link because otherwise the pop-up doesn't work on iPhone, and also because it will encourage readers to hover over the text. Either reason by itself wouldn't make me want to add a link, but the two together definitely encourage it a little more, especially as it's only a minor addition. My problem is I don't know how to change [[File:Gothic-purple-fairy-pink.jpg]] to [http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/_ cb20101210044555/uncyclopedia/ images/8/8b/ Gothic-purple-fairy-pink.jpg] using wiki parsing. I'm assuming there is a way, but as mediawiki allows but frowns on linking to images this way I haven't found an easy fix. Pup 12:17 14 Feb '11
And why would you even want to link to them like that unless they're animated gifs or svgs, or something? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 00:19, 14 February 2011
Also, the hovering is why it's in a blue that is slightly different from the link blue, I thought. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 00:20, 14 February 2011
Personally I'd prefer to link to then that way as I prefer the look of them that way - especially when you realize that they are ideally in context. And the reason for the link is this
Gothic-purple-fairy-pink
works on iPhone safari, whereas this
Gothic-purple-fairy-pink
doesn't. Pup 12:34 14 Feb '11
If that's the only browser doing that, I'm inclined to not do it, revert war you if you beg to differ, and all around sit on it out of pure spite for the developers being asshats. But that'd take effort.
In all seriousness, however, I don't understand, 'prefer the look of them that way'? Over what? Is there some difference of which I've been oblivious this entire time? Anyhow, direct linking doesn't even support scaling, either, so... eh? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 01:09, 14 February 2011

There is a MediaWiki {function} that performs exactly that transformation. I stumbled on it when trying to debug {{InlineMedia}} during an era when Wikia's clients and servers weren't talking to each other. Shall I go looking for it? Spıke ¬ 00:51 14-Feb-11

It's {{Filepath:Gothic-purple-fairy-pink.jpg}} Spıke ¬ 00:54 14-Feb-11

Neat, but I'm still fuzzy as to what possible advantage that would have. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 01:09, 14 February 2011
As to the look of the thing - in the example I have above I haven't changed the colour of the text. If you are changing the colour of the text to a different blue, then that's all good. As for the other - it's just the way I was thinking of doing it if I were to do it myself, as I like to make things accessible on iPod. Pup 04:16 14 Feb '11
Fair enough, but what's the effective difference between {{Filepath:Gothic-purple-fairy-pink.jpg}} and [[File:Gothic-purple-fairy-pink.jpg]]? Or was I imagining that you seemed to be implying that they do different things? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:27, 14 February 2011
For the pop-up you should use the latter, definitely. But as for where you want to direct someone's attention to an image as a link, this is my preferred. Pup 05:06 14 Feb '11
Oh, I see... but why? Sure, it's cleaner, but it also completely defeats the purpose of hypertext - any of the relevant information is removed; the source, the copyright, the description of what it even is, the uploader, the scaling if it's a giant thing, what else it's used for... all of the interconnectedness goes poof and there is just a picture. No context. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 05:12, 14 February 2011
Context in this case is as it relates to the article. I'm thinking of what Guildy has done with the images in his PLS entry - which I would link to here if it weren't for my browser issues. He has linked directly to the image itself. Oh, and as for the scaling - it is possible with a change to the URL, but I don't remember how to do it off the top of my head. Pup 05:59 14 Feb '11
Would it suprise you to read that I don't like what he did, not one bit at all? It doesn't relate to the article - yoinking it out like that, it doesn't relate to anything... it's just: Here's an example. Do you remember why you are here? There's nowhere to go but back. Meantime the point gets lost. And it might as well be anywhere; why even upload it onto the servers here? To me, that's is just annoying, because there's no context, nowhere else to go, nothing - the entire use of a wiki is context, connection, history... Apparently you feel otherwise.
Ah, unless there's some sort of parsoid shortcut, you probably need to fish out the specific resized url for it that way, which means you first have to tell it to generate one some other way. Although there may well be such a one. These things are weird. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 06:15, 14 February 2011
I've actually suggested he do the pop-up images that we have been discussing and referred him on to here. I think that they would be fitting in this instance - doesn't require reload of the page or back button on browsers. As for the parsoid - new word for me - I tried it once when linking an image from wikimedia commons directly to an Uncyc article. I played with the URL a little to adjust the size and it worked better than I could have hoped. I think when mediawiki creates the link to the image it parses it rather than placing it on the page and getting the browser to resize. That means that the parsing is done via the URL. I can't access source on here so I can't give an example, but I have tried it, and managed to get it working. (As for the why - I wanted to use the image on a page for a temporary thing without uploading as it was only a temporary thing, and I saw no advantage in having an image brought in from elsewhere that had no ongoing need.) Pup 10:52 14 Feb '11
Aye, I saw... he can perhaps have the joy of testing a new template... or not.
Calling sized images from mediawiki, it renders a new version of that size and saves it on the server somewhere else. On Wikia, if it was an animation, the resize loses that, and in general, if it is a svg, a png is rendered. But if it is something with no ongoing need, that is a very special case, no? Usually stuff does have cause to stick around. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 21:49, 14 February 2011
I missed this last comment. And long story short - we've come to an agreeable compromise, and the only issue now is re asshattedness of the iPhone browser developers. If I'm working on something that I want to have support cross browser I can do what I want, but for the purposes of a template for general use, you're right, not worth the issue. And I can see no ongoing need for scaling images using URL, but it's always good to know that there are options around - who knows what the next server upgrade will bring. . Pup 10:08 16 Feb '11
We have? Neat; that's probably a first for us. Unfortunately, I've kind of forgotten most of the thing... and it looks scary. Is it scary? (Looks like I missed that too for a bit, go figure)
Bugger, even if it is general use, we still may as well make the things compatible for the things we use; ain't we going to be using them, too? And mon, I'm sorry for being so difficult. I dunno why I do it, but I imagine it might get kind of annoying... sorry. >.<
Maybe we'll stop being able to host them locally at all and will have to start using uncyclomedia... 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:19, 17 February 2011

UnNews hijinx

I've noticed you saying stuff about UnNews on other peoples' talk pages (and am too lazy to actually find them again and read them) but from what I determined something funky is happening. So do I have to create a new page for my UnNews or would simply moving it to the UnNews section work? Jackofspades (talk) 01:58, February 14, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to answer for you Lyrithya, but moving it works. --Tophat headless 02:00, February 14, 2011 (UTC)
You should be sorry, since in the case of UnNews, you're actually wrong - need to recreate them in the UnNews namespace, or it messes up the timing of the dpl that lists them. Lists them by article creation date, see. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:02, 14 February 2011
Hmph... But I saw dex and some other users move theirs. --Tophat headless 02:03, February 14, 2011 (UTC)
If they were just created, doesn't matter, or if it's just fixing the name or something... but an article that has existed somewhere else, say, userspace, for more than a few hous or so should really be recreated instead of moved. And just because you saw others do something doesn't mean they were doing it right, anyhow. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:05, 14 February 2011
Lyrithya is right; if you want your story to be at the top of the Recent news column, create a new story and copy-paste the text into it. Spıke ¬ 02:06 14-Feb-11

FYI--Am watching UnNews this morning, but the only article in the recent batch worth featuring (Chinese creditors) was featured when it ran originally on January 26. Scofield (seal-clubbing) has more thinly veiled advocacy justified only by wacky quotes; JackOfSpades (Spring training) is okay but is basically a single pun; Funnybony (One-world) has an article indistinguishable from his hoax source; Dexter (Disco), more than amusing the reader, amuses himself by breaking the "news" canon (It's on VFH, of course); and Froggy (Stonehenge) mostly invents a new acronym to spell CUNT. Spıke ¬ 14:12 14-Feb-11

And your point? I actually wrote a pretty good Egyptian related news story for Illicopedia, take a look if you have a second and see if you'd like it here too. Then drag it over (the Hathaway pic is here somewhere too). I can't linger, must get back to reading the National Enquirer. Aleister 14:28 14-2-'11 Be MY Valentine!

Uh, no, I think it is where it belongs at ?pedia. My point was merely to dispel rumors I had quit because the Front Page isn't rotating fast enough. There are two absurdities in the news right now:

  • In Egypt, Mubarak is moving offshore a sum impossible on his $20-a-month salary, but approximately the size of all the foreign aid the US has sent to Egypt since Jimmy Carter signed the "peace" deal.
  • Obama unveils his 2012 budget, which admits he can't win legislative victories, but sets its sights lower, on the readily achievable task of rolling Republicans.

Neither of these exactly break new ground. Spıke ¬ 14:49 14-Feb-11

Compliment accepted, thank you. Mubarak is my uncle, by the way, and whenever I go to his house the wine flows like money, and the money is put down for the monkeys and cats to pee on. It's good to be king, or pharoah. Yay Uncle Hosni! Aleister Velantined

King Fonzie of Jordan apparently went to prep school in Western Massachusetts and someone was saying on Boston radio yesterday that, if he liked you, he'd fly you over to the Casbah and the above is just about what would happen to you. (The wine-flowing-like-money thing, not the being-peed-on thing.) By the way, plenty of ice will melt today. Spıke ¬ 15:26 14-Feb-11

Perfect.
Also, you may want to be careful that this spam doesn't get... er... spammed too much. Especially with IPs. Not sure how you would do that, but... eh. And can't you use a noinclude with the forms thingy? Or does that not work? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:12, 17 February 2011
Tried that and failed. Actually considering changing it to a link and then I can use the noinclude option, as well as playing with it to change it to a button hack. (Didn't mean to hit save before.) Also It's no easier - or even slightly more difficult - using this to span then it would be to use more traditional methods, as it should link to the talk page of whomever is logged in. I think that IPs would end up with an error or linking to a talkpage for their own IP using this. Pup 05:01 17 Feb '11
Oops - didn't work. Changed back slightly. I'm sure there is a way to do it, just haven't quite cracked it yet. Nevermind - that hack will do for now. Pup 05:07 17 Feb '11
Ah... doesn't matter terribly. And I'm just worried it might give IPs the wrong idea. But then again, most of them get that without any help already... silly things. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 05:08, 17 February 2011

about the whole VFD thing

First of all, I want to apologize to you like I did to Spike for being a jerk. You know we're still homies.

Really though, I think you're just getting caught up in the technicalities of everything. You said an image can't stand up as a full article. Look at A wizard did it. It's not only an article, but a featured one. There's no way to technically upload a video of that size because they're too large, so the only way to do it is to link to the outside, and by doing that I'm actually doing uncy. a favor because it's sucking up less bandwidth.

Some people find it funny, there's no special namespace for videos, so why just say, "oop. No place for full-length videos, let's just delete em all." That's a terrible waste of good satire, and it ignores the web 2.0 There's so much potential for satire from other mediums here.

I mean, would you be satisfied if I added a sentence to the article: "Look, there's text on here now, it's technically an article now." I'll add a sentence if you want to. It will do to the humor what oj did to basketball, but I'll do it, and then it will be an article. It's Mrthejazz... a case not yet solved. 05:11, February 17, 2011 (UTC)

Technically, technicalities are everything. Don't forget that.
But A wizard did it is not just the image, anyhow; it has other content, and it is in wiki formatting, and it also has the whole 'in-joke' dealy about it as well as a retrospective to back it up... although if you want to bring up how it's featured and whatnot, I'll just bring up how I didn't support that. Neener, or something.
And anyhow, there are websites for videos. This is a website for mediawiki stuff, something about how it being a wiki - missing out on satire, are we? It's another medium, and not one that we really do, because that is not what our platform is optimised for. Similarly, we do not compile lists of one-liners and small jokes, or giant novels, for that matter, but there are plenty of websites that do. If you really want this here as an article, however, why not actually make an article? Use the wiki and do something like UnTunes - move it to a pseudo-namespace and play it out as part of the wiki; make a frame for it. Put something on it for everyone to see - a header that gives the impression that there should be a video there in case folks can't see it, maybe parody something else in the process. And give some background, like the intros Zombiebaron wrote for his adventures, or include scripts, or add some related text to conclude it, or something. File information, where it came from, who uploaded it, where it came from, etc...
But it's just a blank page as it is. Why is it even on the wiki? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 05:41, 17 February 2011

Still an in-joke. It's like "Vandelay Industries". True, there is a huge section of the population who know what it is, but to see the humour in just "Vandelay industries" is an in-joke. It's not an Uncyclopedia in-joke, but it is an in-joke. Cuntymints is mor of an in-home, and given that it was started on IRC, it's also not truly an Uncyc in-joke, but rather an IRC in-joke. Dan Kwon, on the other hand, is an Uncyc in-joke. Pup 07:05 17 Feb '11

I will wear the hat to show my gratitude, and it will be a splendid hat. If the resources stretch far enough I will have one designed for you as well. God I love hats.--Holy shit it's Neopowell 00:31, February 18, 2011 (UTC)

Anyhow, mon, no problem; it's not every day I see a picture of a hot chick on recent changes and it takes me to an article about ugliness. Any particular kind of hats? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 05:36, 18 February 2011
Ahh yes, getting images for that article was fun, especially having an excuse to google Susan Coffey. My favoured hats are the trilby and top hat, but I used to have a bowler which was my TV-watching hat. We had some good times, my bowler and me, chilling out watching TV and eating crisps. Do you have any preferences for headgear?--Holy shit it's Neopowell 13:08, February 18, 2011 (UTC)
Oo, trilbies... never realised that's what they're called, but I love those things... but I'm more of a mask person, myself. They're just so fun. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 18:23, 18 February 2011
Bowlers always make me think of the Thompson twins. Who did a really good cover of who wants to be a millionaire on Red, Hot and Blue, but were otherwise a pretty shit band. And masks are cool - always wanted a mask like Bowies in the masquerade scene. It's funny how a fleshy, broad framed guy can't quite get away with dressing like a gangly demon king though. Pup 10:00 18 Feb '11
I'm contemplating whether to wear my pirate hat out tonight. It's not a pirate-themed night, but everyone loves them three-corners. I also read your message on my talk page about "closing my spans." I'm assuming this is serious business, and not sexual innuendo, so could I please ask what are spans and how do I close them?--Neonazi powell 09:32, February 19, 2011 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with a good three corners, and the style wasn't just for pirates, anyhow. 'Swasn't.
The spans are html tags - <span> tags, used for styling text. But at the end of the part you want to style, you need to close the span with a </span> or the style will keep going until the end of its container. As in, the end of the page. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 11:16, 19 February 2011

Aye, I saw that... but do we really need more articles about 'Fuck whoever', let alone articles about the articles? I'll grant, retrospectives are exactly that, articles about articles, but at very lest they tend to be on articles that are in of themselves too short, as that's sort of the point, to really say all that much on their own.
Sorry, mon, but I'm not sure you should you move it to be a 'real article', especially since literally interviewing folks makes it even more of a vanity piece... 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 18:14, 21 February 2011

Need to add the timestamp and customisation into the signature itself and sign with three tildes. As in, mine's this: {{SUBST:nosubst|User:Lyrithya/sig}} <span style="font-size:10px; color:#000;">{{SUBST:CURRENTTIME}}, {{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}} </span>
Need to manually add in all the bits of the time like that, and there are a few different forms options for months and days and whatnot, but yeah... 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 21:48, 21 February 2011
Only one problem. What happens when there already is a timestamp on past signings. --Purple mini lolly Lollipop Purple mini lolly - CONTRIBS - WRITINGS - SHOP - Now adopting! 21:54, February 21, 2011 (UTC)
Not in the signature file, in the input box under your preferences - I pasted what's in mine above so you could see and do something similar. Mind, that won't change past ones, but it will affect those you do after saving the preferences... at least until you change it again. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:04, 21 February 2011
Meh, i'm fine without a customized timestamp for now. Care for a lollipop? --Purple mini lolly Lollipop Purple mini lolly - CONTRIBS - WRITINGS - SHOP - Now adopting! 22:06, February 21, 2011 (UTC)
No, thanks. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 22:19, 21 February 2011
Of course there is always the alternative of including the time as a code in your sig structure, and set your sig up to display the time in the way you prefer. This can also be used as a replacement of your own sig, and set it up that if the time isn't included in the call to your sig template it doesn't display. The advantage here is that your previous sigs - with timestamp included - are unaffected, but future sigs have a customized stamp, and even give you the potential of calling a little script thing to show how long ago you signed. Of course, not everyone like this idea, but if you wanted to do it you'd be able to set your sig up with the preferences as {{Subst:Nosubst|User:PuppyOnTheRadio/sig2{{subst:!}}{{subst:#time:U|now}}}}. This would set up your sig as {{User:PuppyOnTheRadio/sig2|1298334534}}. You can then manipulate that number using time parser functions. Or, less excitingly, add the time in as a timestamp within the sig template like {{Subst:Nosubst|User:PuppyOnTheRadio/sig2{{subst:!}}{{subst:CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}}}. This means that it ends up as {{User:PuppyOnTheRadio/sig2|20110222004141}} which you can style within your template as <span style="color: puce;">{{#time: r |{{{1}}}}}</span>. Pup 12:49 22 Feb '11

I thought you were using the never closes tags definition of boyhood there. It's hard to refer to an account of less than a year as an adult, and at the moment you appear to be less than 4 days old. Also, there is a maturity of coding involved. I for one would never leave a tag open. Pup 06:04 22 Feb '11</small>

Tagging Articles

I snuck out of John Lydon's basement to give you an excessively long rundown of my gameplan for tagging articles, bring up a couple issues with said gameplan, and ask a couple questions to address said issues with said gameplan:

Gameplan

  • First, limits.
Uncyclopedia articles only. No UnNews, HowTo's, or anything that isn't a typical article. I wouldn't want to try anything too big or presumptuous.
  • Tag articles, not users.
I'm not even looking at who wrote the article that I'm reading, as that would just inevitably influence my decision to tag or not.
  • Scan article, move on.
I'm focusing on large-scale violations of HTBFANJS and general dickery, not little things like fixing typos. Therefore, I don't read the article well until I've found something that catches my attention, in the thought that there are lots of articles, so getting through the current one and to the next is the most important.

Issues

  • Finding articles.
The "random page" button is nice, but incredibly inefficient, and it includes HowTo's, UnPoetry, UnBooks, and even Redirects. My daily goal was to hit the button 100 times and judge the pages, but the dead pages were adding up quickly. I also noticed some trends in bad pages, so I've changed tactics to going through the categories listed on the main page (People, Politics, History, Art) or along the base of articles, starting with something like People:Celebrities, because those tend to be the least original and funny and the most offensive, with more Gay Jokes Per Word (GJ/W) than any other category or Category:Nonsense, because all too often that's what they are.
  • Random articles.
For example. For further example. Some I find damn original and witty. Others not so much. And I'm shocked at how many there are. The problem is that, if I wasn't a book nerd, I wouldn't find the Finnegans Wake page funny, so how can I know that some other page that I don't find funny isn't actually great and I'm just not getting it? VFD? Fix? Shrug and leave?

Questions

  • Is there a way to search articles by phrase or by article rating? The ratings tend to be pretty accurate for some of the major pages, though many minor pages haven't been rated yet. As for phrases; I've found that certain words (particularly swears and homosexual slang) tend to pop up in dumb articles, so if there was a way to search articles based on that it would be great (I've seen it done on Wikipedia, so if you don't know how I can look into it).
  • I know there was one other one, but my coffee rush just officially crashed and I can barely type now. ~ Humbuck Talk 06:29, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
Well, have some over-lengthy responsitiness in... er, response.
  • No need to limit yourself entirely; aye, UnNews, UnPoetia, and others are quite different, but HowTos, UnBooks, etc still follow the usual gists in much the same ways.
  • And sometimes it can be worth it to go through a user's contributions, if they're bad enough, and take all their articles to VFD... but you want to wait until after the user isn't around anymore if you intend to do something like that, for reasons which I suspect you might be able to guess. For general use and just starting out, not paying heed to who wrote it is probably a good idea, though, but still do make sure you do check the history that it wasn't just vandalised at some point.
  • Scanning, eh? I do something like that. I see them, and... well, I have a javascript that 'deathlists' them, though I probably don't even look as much as you're indicating you intend to... and my list has just been growing like crazy. I should really do something about that one of these days. You're welcome to go through the top pile and see if you can't do something about some of them... tag them, vfd them, take them off because I hit the wrong tab, but I'm not sure why you'd want to. It's horrifying. At least to me.
Anyhow, finding them is an interesting thing - actively looking, I was just going through all the pages on the entire wiki by title, clicking and looking at the ones that seemed more questionable, starting with ; or some such... made it to AAAAA. Yeah. That didn't go so well. And there are so many to just happen across, for that matter...
A lot of the really bad ones don't even have categories, or have really stupid ones, though - may want to consider going through categories with strange names like Category:Things Caused By Failure Of Rubber and whatnot, too. Some are scary what they have.
  • If you don't know what to do with something, look at the style, the tone, the presentation... how well is it written, how consistent is it, is there a wikipedia page on the subject, and does that help? It takes looking more closely and considering, but... eh. Should be able to figure it out, not that I could blame you if you can't be bothered; I usually can't, myself. Considered doing reviews, though? They'll teach you how to really pick apart an article... Look at enough and things just start to become apparent...

  • Search by phrase, aye... doesn't the search thing support that? If that fails, though, you could use DPL. That's more complicated, but it'd get you what you want in a nice... list or table or whatever you set it up as.
  • You wanted to know what kind of cheese to get. Get the smelly stuff. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 07:36, 25 February 2011
I need to not write messages at 1am during a caffeine downslide, I'm more confusing than a... than a... damn it. This is not my morning, either. I'll go through your list from the top down and update the list as I go and then start with dumb categories. I wouldn't say horrifying, though; just incredibly intimidating. I'd also say a good pruning is in order. I'd also also say "The first step is always the hardest." And a friend of mine would say "There's no such thing as a 'problem,' only an 'opportunity to be epic.'" True story. ~ Humbuck Talk 15:53, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
Also, I can't for the life of me get on the chatroom (I'm running Google Chrome on Windows 7 if that somehow helps). ~ Humbuck Talk 15:53, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
Ooo, the list shall get some love? Some of them really just need pictures and some may as well be qvfd-ed, though, if that gives you some idea... but would you like a tab to add stuff to it as well? Make it even worse?
For that matter, some have already been tagged with things. Need a faster way to pull them out when that's the case, though... and I might be hatching a plan, here.
Er, IRC... have you a client? Don't know that chrome has extensions for that, so you may need to install a stand-alone one. Only one I even know of on Windows is Konversation, and it's part of KDE, so it's a little... strange to install. Bloody lovely once it does, though. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 17:57, 25 February 2011
Clients? What do I look like? A doctor? Extensions, yes. X381 (goes straight to voicemail, sorry). I'm gathering that Pidgin has "IRC channel capabilities," whatever that means. But it's a familiar name, so I'm just going to close my eyes and click.
As for a tab for your list, I think it'd be best if I just make my own "prune" list - having it sit there on my userpage will make me feel guilty when I don't trim it. And keep me posted on whatever plan you come up with. ~ Humbuck Talk 21:20, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
Holy buckets, pidgin does support it! And rather well, too. Hmm... now I feel like an idiot, since I use it for a pile of other things already. Huh.
And if you manually add stuff to your list, you'll be that much more inclined to actually deal with it, too. Probably a good idea. As for the plan, I appear to have completely forgotten what it was, go figure. Guuh. I'll yet you know if I can remember and if it turns out to even have been relevant, though. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 21:41, 25 February 2011
I have no idea what you two are planning, but if you're going to go through a maintenance drive on articles, I'd suggest using vital pages as a starting point. These are a list of the 1000(?) pages that am encyclopedia has to have, according to wikipedia. A few of these are redlinked, but that could simply be the title being different. (For instance, Da Vinci, Leonardo instead of Leonardo Da Vinci). It's a mammoth effort, but it was something that we started trying to work on a while ago, but has fallen by the wayside a bit. Just an idea. Pup 03:37 26 Feb '11
And what are you proposing we do to them? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 03:39, 26 February 2011
I just saw a conversation about tagging pages, ad thought I'd bring this to your attention. Whatever. Pup 03:48 26 Feb '11
No, no, that's fine... I just don't see what you're saying we should do about it. As in, there's a list of pages. What about it? O_o 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 03:58, 26 February 2011
Well, if I were looking at large scale maintenance of site, I'd prioritise starting with articles that would be more likely to get hits. The vital articles would probably be my starting point. Pup 04:41 26 Feb '11
Starting point for what, though? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:43, 26 February 2011
Sorry - got sidetracked. Your plan of tagging stuff to do stuff with. Assuming that someone was going to start at ; and got through all the articles... well, I'm impressed you got as far as AAAAAAA. Starting at high importance articles like these and working down from there seems a better plan of attack. Does that make sense? Probably not, but this is unimportant anyway. So, how's the family? How's that thing you had to see that guy about? All sorted now? Pup 01:58 26 Feb '11
Oh, and searching for key words and phrases. The search engine built into the wiki is a bit hit and miss. I have found myself at times finding it easier to use google and type site:uncyclopedia.wikia.com the phrase I was looking for when trying a text based search like that. Especially when looking for images already on site, as GIS will allow me to preview whereas uncyc search won't. Sometimes. I should never write while asleep. Pup 02:05 26 Feb '11
Dittoes on MediaWiki searching, except for your calling it "a bit" hit-and-miss. To find a suitable pic for an UnNews, I go straight to an Uncyclopedia article and steal. Or go to Zombiebaron and beg. Spıke ¬ 14:16 26-Feb-11
Oh, you mean searching for ones to tag? I was mainly just hitting questionable titles before, but... why not. Images are crazy, though. Most of the ones here suck. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 17:49, 26 February 2011

Your reviews tend not to be shit... I think we can trust you. But if it makes you feel better, I tend to read them anyway for.... er... reasons, and tend to agree, anyhow, so whee.
It's the date! The date they've been checked. I think. I assume it is, anyway. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 18:00, 25 February 2011
Ah, I just assumed it was meaningless, which is why I never adjust it. The date you say? You'll have to excuse my ignorance, in Britain we put the day first and month second. I didn't recognise it. --Black Flamingo 22:16, February 25, 2011 (UTC)
In engineer land, we put the year first, then the month, the day, the hour (out of 24), the minute, the second, the milisecond, and concatenate them all as an int or a string.
But yeah, I think some American set that up originally, or something, so everyone's just been following pattern since. I'unno. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 03:40, 26 February 2011

Oh, shiny... and thank you. Shame, though, about the math stuff. Clever notion; if only it had worked. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 20:47, 26 February 2011

Help

Does a pee review work with Userspace articles? --Gamma287 Tro-lo-no 069f11-1 MUN Icons-flag-us ☭Tetяis? 01:08, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

But of course. That way what gets moved out tends to be that much better... well, in theory, anyhow. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 01:12, 27 February 2011
My article came up as a red link. I don't know why. Also, if an article gets an elven on Pee Review, is it {{icu}} worthy? --Gamma287 Tro-lo-no 069f11-1 MUN Icons-flag-us ☭Tetяis? 01:26, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
Fixed; it's just dumb sometimes. Blame special characters or something.
{{ICU}} is just for new articles, under a week old... but an 11, eh... means it needs major work. May as well plow over with a complete rewrite, in this case, unless you really want to keep what it has. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 01:35, 27 February 2011
By new, do you mean:

A: Under a week old

B: Under a month old, or

C: Under two months old the article is really, really bad. --Gamma287 Tro-lo-no 069f11-1 MUN Icons-flag-us ☭Tetяis? 02:03, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

It's two months old, to be exact.
I said a week, didnt I? But yeah, definitely too old for {{ICU}}. Anyhow, if you dont want to rewrite it, you can tag it with a {{fix}} or some such and hope someone else will, or nominate it for deletion, where itll probably either get deleted or someone there will adopt it, so to speak. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:08, 27 February 2011
Maybe I should stop speed reading and look carefully at what you say next time. Anyway, I was thinking of putting it on VFD. It's too much allready to go and fix formatting and grammar errors. I wish to have it euthanized. --Gamma287 Tro-lo-no 069f11-1 MUN Icons-flag-us ☭Tetяis? 02:37, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
Maybe. You could also stop saving so quickly and try using the preview button more... you keep edit conflicting me.
And if you wish to do so, then by all means, do so. Just follow what it says. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:48, 27 February 2011

Infinite Jest

What's there to fix up?

Sure, my "Reviews" addition doesn't quite mesh with the previous stuff. But for a novel this complex, covering so many subjects in so many voices (even the 3rd-person Omniscient Narrator switches his writing style, depending on the type of characters being narrated about: low-brow, high-brow, French-Canadian)... I don't think it's awfully inappropriate.

Per the guidelines, my stuff is arguably better: I'm not taking the "opposite" approach (one of the shortest novels ever), or a "nonsense" approach (Wallace born in a van down by the river Ganges), but instead riffing on, and exaggerating, the truth (one of the lengthiest novels ever).

But I liked the previous stuff. Why not have both?

Stumbo 02:32, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

An article, to be an effective piece, needs to be consistent... at least in some sense. What you added breaks tone, concept, format... but if you can make it fit with the rest, or the rest with it, adding is not a problem. In this case, though, the entire thing has just been sitting there in what looks like a half-finished state for a goodly long while, not hugely funny, with a stretch of a theme and some rather poor jokes, and is also terribly ugly, especially after what you added. If you could fix the thing as a whole, that would be excellent, but at very least realise that additions to articles that don't fit said articles tend to be removed... precisely because they don't fit. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:46, 27 February 2011

You

explain things so well (above comment to Stumbo). Thanks for the edits and vote on the old man and LV, and thanks even more for actually reading it (book length test of literacy). On the Madison Movement 5-year-old reporter page on VFH, lol at your confusion comment. You may have not heard that the Wisconsin governor was punked by a comedy guy who was pretending to be David Koch (a richy rich right-wing billionaire) and the governor talked to him on the phone for 20 minutes. The tape was immediately released on the guy's website. So I thought up a five year old who decided to call the governor and pretend with him, and then releases the tape to UnNews. The audio by Dexter and MrtheJazz is really really fun. And I think I saw that someone was made a poopsmithA! Yay. Aleister 3:54 27-2-'11

And a lovely read it is, too. Wish there were more lovely reads...
The Madison one, though... just confusing. I mean... a girl? Ah, well... your explanation at least explains some of it, other bits. Still confused, though. Always confused. And the poopsmith thing... er... *hides* 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:47, 27 February 2011

Can you huff articles? I need someone to throw some over a bridge in West Virginia for me. They are starting to smell. --Gamma287 Tro-lo-no 069f11-1 MUN Icons-flag-us ☭Tetяis? 06:01, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

Naw, but just list them here - follow the directions on the page and whatnot - add them to the top under the most recent header, and someone'll look to it. Mentioning if it's an author request usually helps, too. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 06:14, 27 February 2011
Or you can just list them on my talkpage... -- Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 06:18, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the other place - I only saw this morning that you have joined the poopsmith ranks. It should be ideal as your on American time - it's pretty straightforward, but if you need any help, just give me shout:-)--Sycamore (Talk) 08:27, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

Merp... thanks, mon. Will do. Well, if it's something you'd be apt to know; I'm already craving a script to archive entries and shuffle the appropriate templates at the click of a button, but something tells me that'd I'd have to figure out for myself. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 09:03, 27 February 2011
Yeah I just do it manually - it's my preference to keep things simple:)--Sycamore (Talk) 15:47, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, normally it looks easy enough... but Zombiebaron... well, eh. I'll probably never get around to it, anyway. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 19:18, 27 February 2011

Pee Review (UbuntuCE)

Thank you for reviewing my article. I appreciate your honest feedback. The idea started of as a joke between me and my friends. Since this is my first entry and as such a work in progress, I am quite surprised by the score (I thought it would be removed). The suggestions you make are valuable and made me understand there is a lot more potential here than I imagined. One question: maybe it would be a good idea to move the page to my userspace till it is reworked? 15:06, February 27, 2011 (UTC)Cereals

Cheers, mon. Mind, a lot of it's just opinion, and I was pretty tired when I wrote it, so... well, anyhow, you should see what does get removed. Stuff with no concept, irredeemable writing, general badness... sure, yours is listy, but there's also some rather good stuff to the lists; not just random dealies like a lot of them. I'd say it's good enough to remain in mainspace as it is, especially since it's probably just going to get better, so no reason to userspace it unless you really want to (although you need to become autoconfimed to move pages (instead of copying the contents); looks like you may have another couple of days on that one, so in the meantime, just ask if you want something moved and I can do it for you). Or you can use a {{construction}} tag to point out you're still working on it if you prefer. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 19:41, 27 February 2011
I would like to have your opinion on the revised page before I put it up for another Pee Review. 20:58, February 28, 2011 (UTC)
Mmm, I'll give it a look when I get the chance. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 23:48, 28 February 2011

wop

Hey Lyrithya, could I make a tiny itsy bitsy suggestion. Take a look at how the article reads with, the first sentence, followed by the second paragraph, and then the rest of the first paragraph. :) --ShabiDOO 14:18, February 27, 2011 (UTC)

Eh? 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 19:59, 27 February 2011
Your article work around programing --ShabiDOO 20:08, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
Yes... eh? at what you said. If I put the second paragraph there, then the first becomes tangential and might as well not exist. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 20:11, 27 February 2011
OK --ShabiDOO 20:14, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
P:S: Tangential is not a word. The word is tangentistical. BTW, I see you have experience with the pee review boxes. If you like that kind of stuff (im not sure) I need to define the comment boxes on the happy monkey pee reviews to have the text fit the box. Im not sure what the code is. Im sure its simple, and a case of just copying the code into each box. Do you happen to know? (BFWTOTWTFE)? --ShabiDOO 22:32, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
Tangential is a word. COLABORATE is not. Also, of interest to Lyrithya, Im is not. Spıke ¬ 22:46 27-Feb-11
No its a misconception. Tangentistical is the root word, tangentistimistical is the derived word and tengestistimistically is the adv. So few people understand. Furthermore, colaborate is the english spelling from North West Singapore where I learnt to spell. --ShabiDOO 22:55, February 27, 2011 (UTC)
I knew you must have done it somewhere. Spıke ¬ 22:59 27-Feb-11

Yay!

Thanks for voting for the Madison Movement article. With your vote the article is assured to be read by some of the dedicated people who have been marching and cheering and staying in place to tell the union workers that they are not forgotten, that they are honored and cared for, that the movement that brought us weekends, the eight-hour day, the end to child labour laws, overtime, and so much more shall not go down without a fight! You've done good. Aleister Twenty hours in the future

I didn't, though. I'm sorry. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 02:44, 28 February 2011

Aleister, you're not changing my mind, at least not by that. If I'm disinclined to vote for something, I ain't going to, just in general. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy 04:04, 28 February 2011
