Now to nag you about something completely different: We guide against the overuse of quotations at [[UNQUOTE]]. Basically, they should be attributed to someone real and should be something he said (but maybe taken out of context) or would have said. They should not be anonymous, and if they start arguing with one another, editors remove all of them. You had an anonymous quote that was pretty good and I massaged it to indicate why he was "speaking on condition of anonymity." But that's not a magic word you can just apply to all of them — and they aren't even coded using {{Tl|Q}}. It reads as though you want a mysterious figure to peer in from the side of the TV screen (you!) and say something irreverent — because it starts to read like a cartoon rather than a news article. See if you can weave the same humor with a different technique. {{User:SPIKE/signature}}<small>10:46 24-Aug-14</small>

PS--Regarding "it doesn't show up using the search window," the Uncyclopedia search tool is notoriously bad. Several Uncyclopedians always go to an external search engine to search the site. However, your problem might have been caused by moving your article to an unintended namespace. edit Welcome to Uncyclopedia

Spike the Dog (06b)

Spike is a grumpy old dog. You can stroke his fur, or you can be smitten by his stick. It is up to you.

Hello, Frank Fancinostril, and welcome to Uncyclopedia. This is a wiki (a collection of pages anyone can edit). Words in blue are "links" and can be clicked to take you to another page. This wiki is for comedy. It pretends it's Wikipedia, but we make people laugh, not bore them. If you aren't interested in a fake encyclopedia but in writing fake news stories, we have UnNews, and there are other projects for scripts, lyrics, how-to guides, and so on.

You can create your own article. For starters, create it under your own name; for example, User:Frank Fancinostril/Bedbug. (The red instead of blue is a link to a page that doesn't yet exist.) We have a list of articles that need to be created. You can help without writing articles; just read articles and, if you see an improvement in writing or in comedy, jump in and edit it. In fact, you can help without writing at all, such as organizing, watching for vandals, or even greeting other new users.

To write articles, you need a sense of humor and an ability to write good English. We all have strengths and weaknesses and you can get help in any area. But everyone needs an ability to work with other people. Be polite, positive, and helpful toward others, and assume others are doing the same toward you. Here are some pages that might help:

For personal help
  • The administrators are willing to help you, and several Uncyclopedians are willing to adopt you.
  • I will watch this page for a while and will know if you edit it. Afterward, you can contact me on my own talk page.
  • If you've written an article, we have a Proofreading service where someone will correct your mistakes, and a review process where an experienced Uncyclopedian will read your article and suggest improvements.
How to post to talk pages

Please follow these general rules:

  • Add comments at the end of a talk page so people notice them.
  • Start your paragraphs with one or more : characters to indent them and set them off from other people's posts.
  • At the end, type ~~~~ (four tildes), which gets replaced by your user name and the current date and time.
  • Don't delete anyone's messages. In case of any controversy, we depend on an accurate record of what was written. You may disavow your remarks by striking them through like this.

I hope you enjoy it here and write a lot of funny stuff! Spıke ¬ 11:13 17-Aug-14

edit User:Frank Fancinostril/Star Wars 7

No, I didn't delete it; I just moved it into your userspace, where you can continue working on it at the name shown above. This page (your user talk page) is usually for conversations with other Uncyclopedians. Note that whenever you type into the edit box, you are typing in code, and indenting a paragraph means something special. Happy editing! Spıke ¬ 11:13 17-Aug-14

Well, glad you found your editing; but as your post to my talk page says you had to search to find this, I am still unsure you have ever read me posting to you! Please confirm we are in contact by typing below, following the guidelines in the Welcome message above. Cheers! Spıke ¬ 02:17 18-Aug-14

Yes, I'm not sure if I accidentally made two user pages, because when I start typing "uncyc.." in the address window, the drop down menu on my laptop shows several Uncyclopedia past sessions, and when I "grab" one to go to it, I noticed that the Discussion page has nothing on it (unlike this one) Anyway if I can ask you, am I right in thinking that my topic page is not visible to others (except you)until the topic line is a blue link? And when I feel my page is ready, how is it posted with a blue link? I apologize for my lack of understanding here, and openly mock myself in all humility! Frank Fancinostril (talk) 21:26, August 19, 2014 (UTC)

It is more polite to let us mock you instead! Going wherever your drop-down menu takes you is dicy. You can always get back to this page by clicking My talk at the top of any Uncyclopedia page. As mentioned above, it is conventional here to use indentation to set your posts off from the posts of others; I only went to the horizontal line to indicate a conversation much later but on the same general topic. Your page is visible to everyone, but not yet at Star Wars 7 but at the name shown at the top of this section. Spıke ¬ 21:36 19-Aug-14

Yes, I saw the page you just created. Only, if you want to talk to me, post here (or on User talk:SPIKE, but preferably here). You were not on a different website but on the talk page (discussion page) of the article you created. But use it only to conduct a discussion of the article. Every article and every user has a talk page. Spıke ¬ 21:43 19-Aug-14

edit Formatting

Congratulations on mastering the Horizontal Line! But I couldn't help noticing that your article contains almost no other formatting at all. You need to divide it into sections using the double-equal-sign coding, and that means organizing the information so that similar information is in the same section. Cheers! Spıke ¬ 16:47 21-Aug-14

Good point, I'll experiment beyond the Horizontal line & see about reordering like info. Speaking of formatting, thank you for the photo sizer box thing (I was thinking it needed that) and the intro help. I have three questions, 1- When I click on the discussion page from my user page, theres a box that says something about this page has been deleted, and is it appropriate to edit there? Do I need to move the pages? And 2 - I've seen wiki pages that are for things that are in production, as my page pretends to be, or are you feeling this is more of an entertainment news lampoon, and belongs as an unnews item? And 3 - Can the name Star Wars 7 be the topic line, (Frank Fancinostril is a goofy user pen name to be clear) and is that done when you determine that it's ready? (I'm still a little foggy on the ins & outs)Frank Fancinostril (talk) 21:27, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

Brickbats on not mastering the indentation! Do not indent a paragraph (with a space) to get an indented paragraph; you saw what you get! Precede the paragraph with one or more colons, as I've done now. Now to answer your questions:

  1. There are many ways to get to a deleted page, where the dialog page you saw comes up. But your own talk page has not been deleted; we are on it right now! You may have clicked on Discussion of an article that does not have a talk page. (The link would have been red.)
  2. Indeed as you are writing about fake current events (chiefly Harrison Ford's toe), this might turn into an UnNews rather than an enduring article in the encyclopedia. Please browse UnNews:Style, if you make that decision, to learn how better to make it read like a real news article.
  3. In fact, we don't sign content pages with our Uncyclopedia user name at all (because rarely is a page all one person's). The page name is the headline. In a day or two, you will see a Move button above a page to change its name. But Star Wars 7 is not yet ready for either encyclopedia or UnNews. Chiefly, you are still making too much fun of your own changes of mind; you need to play it straighter and write actual humor that will be the article's focus. Spıke ¬ 21:39 21-Aug-14
The article is showing good promise for your first work here Frank. Since the film is production and no one really knows what it is about, then you can speculate what it could be all about. Or not. Will Binks return??--LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 21:47, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

Clarification: You are Frank Fancinostril. Don't know why, but you are. And you have a talk page, its name is User talk:Frank Fancinostril, and we are on it right now. Your article, User:Frank Fancinostril/Star Wars 7, does not have (and probably should not have!) a talk page, which if it existed would be User talk:Frank Fancinostril/Star Wars 7. This is why you were getting that "Create a page?" dialogue. Cheers! Spıke ¬ 01:51 22-Aug-14

It's good to know that you know what's going on Spike, I suspected that something was amiss (besides my wacky "humor") so the case is "Solve-ed !" (Pink Panther - Inspector Clouseau reference) Pardon my French (I'm not French) I clustered stuff on the Star Wars 7 page and got rid of many, many horizontal lines (sniff, sniff... I loved those lines)I tend to enjoy "Python" type humor that does tend to be "clunky" but can be effective for the ridiculous prone (me and probably 3 percent of world population - the rabble, for sure) but I will have to aim for a subtler "slow build to strong smirky smile" humor that does take a certain amount of creative control/ability over time I suspect. Luckily there is edit-ability on this wiki ! Wiki, wiki, (you see...I think that sounds funny...) Frank Fancinostril (talk) 10:35, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

edit Example

Today you edit near the sentence, "Live Action Jar Jar Stinks is sure to be a winner with Jim Carey in costume !" Whether this is your opinion, or designed to appear as the narrator's opinion, the page won't read either like an encyclopedia article or a news article if put in UnNews. You can make exactly the same pun and tell exactly the same joke, but in both the main (encyclopedia) and UnNews namespaces, the structure should seem like serious reporting and not cheerleading. Spıke ¬ 16:51 23-Aug-14

Excellent point Spike! You're right,I see what you mean. I need to step back a little (or a lot) and edit better, with over all vision in mind. My kookiness shouldn't be unwieldy, in a world of established form. I'll try to control my loose cannon style with additional editing. Thanks Frank Fancinostril (talk) 18:43, August 23, 2014 (UTC)

"Kooky on the inside, 'encyclopedic' on the outside!" Cheers! Spıke ¬ 18:47 23-Aug-14

edit External links

Now another guideline that you surely would have followed if anyone had told you about it: Uncyclopedia is a website for your original comedy creations, not a catalog of all funny stuff on the subject available elsewhere. In addition, we try to do our webhost the favor of not making its viewer traffic leave the website. Therefore, you should remove the link to YouTube, plus any of your text that simply prepares the reader for someone else's comedy production.

Nearby, at See also, I don't know why you code a link within Uncyclopedia with the single-bracket code (at which point you find yourself having to instruct your reader to click on the number [2], which might not always be [2]). Why don't you just use the double-bracket code, as I did with the link I added? Spıke ¬ 03:07 24-Aug-14

I don't know how to link to that TIE Fighter page, as you did with "movies" blue link and at bottom "Thunderbirds". I will remove Youtube link even though I thought it was hilarious reveal after set-up, but I understand redirecting traffic is a bad idea. Frank Fancinostril (talk) 03:19, August 24, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing that link. Frank Fancinostril (talk) 05:55, August 24, 2014 (UTC)

Better that way; as you could see, after you deleted the YouTube link, your "Please click on [2]" became [1]!

Now to nag you about something completely different: We guide against the overuse of quotations at UNQUOTE. Basically, they should be attributed to someone real and should be something he said (but maybe taken out of context) or would have said. They should not be anonymous, and if they start arguing with one another, editors remove all of them. You had an anonymous quote that was pretty good and I massaged it to indicate why he was "speaking on condition of anonymity." But that's not a magic word you can just apply to all of them — and they aren't even coded using {{Q}}. It reads as though you want a mysterious figure to peer in from the side of the TV screen (you!) and say something irreverent — because it starts to read like a cartoon rather than a news article. See if you can weave the same humor with a different technique. Spıke ¬ 10:46 24-Aug-14
