Turban Talk

You confused me with your reply over at Forum:Sockpuppets. Assuming that you are NOT Sikh or Muslim or any of the various turban wearing peoples what exactly is wrong with joking about it? It's a racial/religious stereotype so your a and b reasons fit a BUNCH of stuff here. Uhmmmm, I guess what I wanted to know is it THAT particular phrase or 'all of the above that you would rather not see? Also, I will not reply to anything you say as to avoid any sore issues, I am just curious. Eh...might as well ask, "does the Turban reference in Pope Linus offend you?"  – Mahroww a.k.a. Horatio Meyer Stein  03:28, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

It's the phrase "Muslim Towelhead" that I think is vulgar and inappropriate. There are plenty of ways to use stereotypes for humour and subversion (and indeed, clever use of stereotyping is spread liberally throughout Uncyclopedia) without resorting to crass name calling, which is what that phrase boils down to. I see "Muslim Towelhead" as carrying the same undertones as "dumb nigger" or "money grabbing kike" - that is, a derogatory stereotype being used in a manner which isn't displaying any wit or intellectual awareness in its use. In the current climate of ridiculous paranoia and Islamaphobia that's being propagated in western society, I see it as the duty of people with at least a basic level of self-awareness to challenge ignorant assumptions on subjects about which they are underinformed (or much worse, misinformed). Also, I'd be intrigued to know why TD can determine that someone with a turban pointing a gun at him is a "Muslim". Islam is a religion that preaches peace and understanding above conflict and violence, and the overwhelming percentage of Muslims in the world practice it in such a way. The guy pointing an AK47 at him in Afghanistan is an extremist, not a representative of the Islamic religion. Or maybe the army train their soldiers to be able to identify someone's faith on sight? Do Muslims have a "look" that identifies them as such to the casual observer? You know, like the way that all Jews are big nosed and wear skullcaps, and all blacks dressed in chunky jewellery and hip-hop clothing are drug dealers? Again, this is a result of the paranoia and suspicion that has been fostered since September 11 against a religion, rather than a cadre of fanatics who belong to an extremist sect that misinterprets the doctrine of that religion. Maybe we should assume that all Catholics are torturers because of the Spanish Inquisition? Hopefully this illustrates to you why Pope Linus is a witty article, but calling someone a "towelhead" is merely an example of how one is prepared to swallow tabloid buzzwords and propaganda, and pander to the government's desire to keep us stupid and afraid of each other. And please, don't stop yourself from replying to "avoid sore issues", if you wish to. Debate and discussion is how our awareness and understanding grow, and there is no reason why this topic should become unpleasant or uncomfortable. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 11:20, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Okay, but I should respect your feelings (and until now I wasn't really sure what those were) about it, but since you opened the door to "debate and discussion" I will reply. No debate really, because I pretty much have the same values I guess. I will say there is MUCH more ignorance than "witty articles" on uncyclopedia, although a lot of it is relatively benign. Anyway, I interpreted your reply and feelings about that kind of “humor” as being rather austere. It wasn’t making logical sense to me.  – Mahroww a.k.a. Horatio Meyer Stein  20:22, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Welbeck Colliery Village In accordance with recommended practice I am asking why you deleted "Welbeck Colliery Village" on December 5th.? Your comment "post it on wikipedia" is an incitement to vandalise since the article is clearly lighthearted and not to be taken literally. 82.38.97.206 mikeL

Well, I only skipped through it to be honest. I saw the last sentence: "These facts are all true" and hit the fire button. My bad, and since you had the grace to come and ask for it back, it's been restored. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue)

Hello

Impressed as I am with your prolific contributions to the anniversaries, maybe this is a bit much for one day? etc.

Well I was going overboard! But seriously get rid of anything you don't think is amusing. Removing or adding one or two letters of the alphabet can make things "sorta" funny. I think my massive additions were part of a subtle plan to have an alternative "this day in history". It's certainly funnier than having AAAAAAAAAAAAAA everywhere... --One Salient Oversight 11:16, 6 Dec 2005 (UTC)

sorry about that

I think Im going to spend a bit more time on doing stuff sorry to have made so many "turds"

OK. Don't take it personally. We get a lot of vandalism and crap on a daily basis here, and what you were creating was going to get deleted pretty quickly anyway. Read the Beginner's Guide and HTBFANJS for writing tips, and remember that the longer you spend on something, the better job you're likely to do on it. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 11:55, 7 Dec 2005 (UTC)

The Admins' Temperaments...

So, why do many admins here have a coarser temperament than admins on Wikipedia? I saw on the deletion log the phrase, "(i.e. p***-poor)". I was raised in Wikipedia before coming here, so I'm perplexed at the Uncyclopedia admins' dispositions. --Chomu 17:13, 7 Dec 2005 (UTC)

I have no bastard idea what you're talking about.....we is delightfully affable (mental note to stamp all over Chomu's articles) -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
What do you mean when you say "to stamp all over Chomu's articles"? Do you mean to stomp on them? Why do many users here chase people away by disrespecting them? Wikipedia's admins treat even vandals with disrespect. They appear to go to great lengths to keep the vandal's mood calm, and to tactfully show the error of their ways, and suggestions on where to concentrate their vandalistic energies.
And so readers know, chasing users away from this site denies Uncyclopedia extra ad money. See the Google ads on the lower left of the page?
If you're all "delightfully affable", why do admins here include cusswords in their edit summaries, talk pages, and nearly everywhere else they type here? Why does Uncyclopedia allow admins to act less-refined than on Wikipedia? --Chomu 17:51, 7 Dec 2005 (UTC)
Like your friend, who advised you to "to make funny vandalisms on the sillypedia that this is", many users don't have a good idea what Uncyclopedia is really about, nor do they bother to read HTBFANJS or the other introductory docs. It makes for a lot of really poor submissions, and we (yeah, even me sometimes) express our frustration through our delete entries sometimesoften. However, we do try to save good material or move it to the correct place. -- T. (talk) 17:37, 7 Dec 2005 (UTC)
OK. Firstly, let me say: don't take any admin comments personally. Especially those in deletion summaries. There are a lot less of us here than at WP, yet we have the second-highest volume of traffic on wikicities. As a result, we also have broader discretionary powers; blocking and deletion here don't require the same convoluted processes that a Wikipedia arbitration does, for example.
Regarding content management, the Wikipedia article on Uncyc puts it rather well: "The creation of humor turns out to be not entirely material to random acts of text insertion. Indeed, the effort required to write one article on the Uncyclopedia of good quality may be the same, or even exceed the effort required to produce a factual article on Wikipedia. Good humor may be more difficult than good information, as there is a correct, or publicly accepted form of a fact, but not necessarily a universal joke."
Let me also refer you to one of our key sets of guidelines: How To Be Funny And Not Just Stupid. This should explain pretty clearly why the article got moved in the first place. Also, whilst we're on the subject of guidelines, it's a good idea to read the Beginner's Guide as well - indeed, it says: "Most of our admins are Silly, don't be offended if they're less than formal with you". Please be assured that I din't mean to offend you with my deletion summary, and it was fairly typical; but compare the contents of Baghmom to Kitten huffing or You have two cows. See what we're aiming for?
Hope this helps clear thing up a bit. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 17:41, 7 Dec 2005 (UTC)
I saw your edit summary and thought "Why do Admins fall in Love, oh why do birds sing......" so thought I'd butt in, firstly it chould be noted that there is quite a large crossover over of users between here and there and that many of the Admins here are also admins there, that being said I think we try to encourage at atmosphere closer to the pub/bar/sports stadium rather than the office and/or lecture theater of wikipedia, I also think there is a strange mix of purilism and maturity here when compared with wikipedia, i.e there maybe courser lanugage here but we expect people to be able to handle it without blushing (the differnce between a PG's Blast! and an 18's Bollocks!), certainly describing something as p***-poor on wikipedia would be a pretty strong condemnation and would get everyones hackels up, here if someone describes something of yours as that you are expected to realise that it's not personal and deal with it, (if you think they are wrong a quick note explaining to them why you think a decision is wrong will (usualy) get it reversed).--The Right Honourable Maj Sir Elvis UmP KUN FIC MDA VFH Bur. Not sure.....but it looks like the only thing added was by Chomu himself (herself?) which was a stub {{cities-stub}} which seems to be non-existant. You had no right...

...You had no right to make the decision that you did on CRAP! and HEY. You know something, those articles may not have been something that you found was funny, but zapping them the way you did was the lowest thing I have seen. You are a HORRIBLE person and your a coward. Prettiestpretty 02:03, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Actually, you're wrong. I was perfectly within my right to delete those articles. As an administrator, I am empowered by the owners of this site to enforce policy based on decisions that we make. As I clearly pointed out in both the deletion summary and on your talk page, there's a growing concensus amongst the admins that the clones of AAAAAAAAA! have gotten out of hand and the joke just isn't funny anymore. I don't make these decisions all by myself; like I said (several times now) it's about concensus. If enough of the admins and/or regular users agree on something reasonable, then that forms a good basis for deciding policy. This site may not be a democracy, but neither is it a police state. If you want your voice to be heard, either participate in discussions at the Village Dump or on IRC. It's that simple, and we make that very clear throughout the site.
Next, you appear to be labouring under the misapprehension that this is some kind of personal slight aginst you or your writing. It isn't. Almost everyone on this site, user and administrator alike, has had some of their work deleted or edited beyond recognition, including me. It's a wiki. That's what happens on wikis. If you have difficulty dealing with that, I recommend that you get yourself a Livejournal or some other blog from the myriad of free sites out there.
Finally, if my (perfectly straightforward) deletion was "the lowest thing (you) have seen"; well, on one hand I'm genuinely pleased that you haven't experienced anything worse than that in your life, but if that's really the case (and not just the reactionary hyperbole that I suspect it to be) you may well be lacking perspective. It's only the internet. I haven't set fire to your house, destroyed your life's work - or for that matter, even tried to insult you. In fact, I even told you that I thought your other articles were good, and to keep up the good work; and your response to me was: "You are a HORRIBLE person and your (sic) a coward." I would have expected somebody who has been contributing to Uncyclopedia as long as you have to be familiar with the beginner's guide. Particularly the point about contacting "the admin by posting a nice, calm message on their talk page". If you still feel that I have been wholly unreasonable with you, you're perfectly entitled to raise a discussion about this at the Village Dump or the Complaints Department, where you may take it up with a larger group. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 10:10, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Wow...

Hey. I found this thing on a Webcomic I read... And it reminded me of what we were talking about on IRC a while ago.

A reader has just brought this matter to my attention.

From GamingHorizon.com:

"Earlier this month, gamer named Mitchell S. with the online screenname "Kuja105" who posts on a few online videogame forums (including GameFaqs.com and MetalGearSolid.org) committed suicide. On January 2 he posted a message in both forums detailing his intent to end his own life, citing overwhelming complications with school and finances.

A very brief period of initial disbelief was followed by a barrage of replies from fellow forum members pleading that he not take his life, trying to talk him out of it.

For days, no word was heard from Mitchell. Fearing the worst, members and administration from metalgearsolid.org began searching for contact information, spending hours on the phone trying to get in touch with him. Finally on January 4, Ryan K., an administrator at metalgearsolid.org, got him on the phone and spent hours desperately trying to talk him out of it.

Sadly, Mitchell soon ended his own life by consuming antifreeze and painkillers.

Later, members from the site contacted Mitchell's family to find out the grave news. They reported it to their online community, and posted a tribute to their passed friend on the front page of metalgearsolid.org." Full Report Here. Mr. Jack Thompson then sent in the following letter regarding the situation to MetalGearSolid.org, one of the forums frequented by Mitchell, where he was known well:

"Your "gamer friend" will find peace through the Lord, Jesus Christ, but sadly it's too late for that.

There is a void in every heart. You can fill it up with the things of God, or the things not of God. This unfortunate soul chose to fill it up with combat games. The playing of these video games is masturbatory activity, meaning senseless self-stimulation. If you gamers could use a dictionary you would know that that term is not necessarily a sexual one.

The real tragedy here extends beyond the life and death of this one fellow. There are literally millions of young people and young adults whose despair is deepend by turning to the things of this world and then finding them meaningless.

All of you gamers need to put down the controllers and get a life. The utter inanity of the vast majority of postings here shows how vapid "gaming" really is.

You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.

Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess.

Sad. Sad for all of you."

It could help with... Stuff. --officer designate Club symbol Lugiatm Club symbol MUN NS CM ZM WH 10:57, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Windfall

We put this entry up to provide an humourous look at the band and we dont represent the band or even like them. We'll remove the pictures if you want.

It's not about that. The fact is that the band are what we call "non-notable persons" or "NNP's". You can read about Uncyclopedia's policy on this at Uncyclopedia:Vanity Policies. Snce the aim of this site is to create articles that the majority of people will find funny, generally private jokes about people you know, your teachers, friends' bands etc. aren't really suitable content for what is meant to be a spoof encyclopedia. A general rule of thumb we use is "Would Wikipedia have an article about this?". However, this doesn't necessarily preclude the possibility of a the page remaining, so long as people find it very funny. If you;re new here, please take the time to have a look through the above-mentioned vanity policies as well as the Beginner's Guide and How to be Funny and not just Stupid to get a clearer idea of what we're looking for here. Hope this helps. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 13:50, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay. There's been response to the page, and it has been positive. We would like if it would be possible for the page to remain, even just for a few days. If you see no input from others, or no evidence of it being visited, well then it might as well be deleted indeed. Thank you for informing us as to the regulations. We will try to adhere to them from now on. And, off record, it seems Windfall are in reality a qute successful band in Ireland. Though we like to take a more satirical approach. The comments section for example is purely satire. I hope this issue can be resolved.

I have reviewed the Vanity Policies. Would it be acceptable if I attached a vanity tag to the page?

The tone of voice I was thinking of was a Soho nu meeja parasite drug hoover. If you think you can manage that, ideal! If you can record a wav or a high-quality mp3 or Ogg, I would love it to work with - David Gerard 20:39, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I bet you never knew you could talk this fast - David Gerard 00:40, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Rectum, I hardly touched him?

Hello Codeine. I'm Claudius, like many, I have seen you around, and it’s nice to meet you. A question- why was User:JohnnyRaven banned indefinitely? That seems like a really long time. He was invaluable to me on my Map article. I'm not trying to stir up old tabloid news or anything, but it seems I can't get his help editing more articles if he is banned. After reading numerous talk pages- does this have something to do with User:Some user as well?--2nd Lt. Claudius Prime 16:24, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Much Ado about Yaks

So I was reading this article, right? Specifically, it's That time I was nearly raped by a yak during my sojourn in Canada. And I was thinking, "Man, this needs an audio version in the worst way." So I started to record one. But my gosh-darn Puritan heritage kept getting in the bleeping way. So then I asked Todd if he'd do it, but he's got issues with swear-words too. I asked him who could do it well, and he suggested you. It's certainly not urgent, but I really think this needs your help, man, if you've got time. If you don't, you can always suggest an alternate, and I'll go bug them about it ;p.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 01:09, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Remember Baghmom?

Now it's a full-fledged article. Take a look and tell me what you think. By the way, do you think you could photoshop some relevant images and post some on that article? --Chomu 22:45, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

haha

Don't do what? Tell people the truth?

We prefer to call it vandalism. You're welcome to believe whatever you want, but don't deface the wiki. Thanks. -- Sir Codeine K·H·P·B·M·N·C·U·Bu. · (Harangue) 19:35, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
How can you vandalize something where the point is to make fun of other things?

Placeholders.

Yeah, sorry about that, I'll keep it in mind from now on. - Aphex.gif| Bla | F@H
