Dear carlb,

User:Hant has performed a checkuser in zh-tw, but occured an error message "CheckUser::doUserIPsRequest" MySQL error "1072: Key column 'cuc_user_ip_time' doesn't exist in table (oscar)". edit Timezone problem in Japan

Good morning Carlb. I am an Uncyclopedian in Japan. Currently, Japanese uncyclopedia has a jet lag. If I write date/time signature (~~~~~), timezone is JST, but date/time is still UTC.

~~~~~ should expand as:
2008年2月17日 (日) 00:16 (JST)
But currently, it expand as:
2008年2月16日 (土) 15:16 (JST)
Date/time is subtracting 9 hours from JST (JST is 9 hours ahead of UTC). What is happening? What time is it now? Thank you, good night. --話切徒 16:19, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
It is now 2008年2月17日 (日) 12:16 (JST) - do you know where your MediaWiki 1.12alpha revision level is? :) Carlb 22:18, 16 February 2008 (EST)
I'm sorry about response time lag. The jet lag has cured. Thanks! Should I have checked the MediaWiki revision before asking you? I have not checked the revision. sorry. --話切徒 13:46, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
The error appears to have been a bug in MediaWiki; when the server was updated to the new version, the time appeared correctly. --Carlb 22:51, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
edit Deleted pages and absolute deletion
Sorry that I bother you with this silly question, but are you the only admin of the two Hikipedia servers? Can only you complete an absolute deletion, that even administrators can't undo? And my real question is, that will someone delete old crap articles completely? I am asking this just because there are some deleted pages in Hikipedia that I personally would like to keep somewhere. Thanks. --Crea(te)dit 18:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, any deletions done by the admins can be undone. The information is still in the database; it's just hidden from view. --Carlb 04:28, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I knew that. I am just asking do you know will anyone anytime complete an absolute deletion... ? --Crea(te)dit 13:13, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
No, deleted text can be undeleted. --Carlb 22:51, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
edit Korean Uncyclopedia server migration
We have planned Korean Uncyclopedia's server migration, mostly due to slow connection speed(100MBps+ Internet is ubiquitous in Korea, even Gigabit LAN services are now available in Korea) and stability. We made a new server and tested about several weeks, now it's time to migrate all the data, including user and article database and media files. I sincerely request to lock Korean Uncyclopedia's database in March 9 00:00 UTC or later, and gave us a dump of user and article database, media files. I will notify about server's new IP and domain soon. Thank you. --Peremen 12:12, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry. The plan was delayed because of some troubles. However, we still have plan and I'll notify about that soon. --Peremen 16:01, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
If you have your own server, I think that it would be easiest to transfer ownership of 백괴사전.org to you instead of registering a new domain (although both options are easily possible}. Other addresses could be configured on domain servers here to be merely aliases (ie: CNAME 백괴사전.org).
The dump of media files is on as is the article text. Any images on which you are using in 백괴사전.org articles will need to be copied into the local wiki. I could have this done by some sort of 'bot if you wish. The full SQL dump (which has the deleted articles and the userlist) is not on but could be made available to you if you need it.
Let me know once you're ready. --Carlb 16:21, 1 March 2008 (UTC) (carlb at kingston net}
edit Extensions
Hello again, Carlb. Would it be possible to install the Widgets extension with the "report a problem"-widget on It would make it a lot easier for us to find vandalism and other problems, since most of our visitors don't have enough knowledge about wikicode to insert the templates we've made for reporting problems. --Trubadurix 18:39, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Lately we've had problems creating User talk pages, so we can't welcome new users. Also our Special:Nuke page is no longer available. --Trubadurix 21:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
User talk and nn:special:nuke should be working now.
I don't see any information for the widget extension that you mentioned, at least not anything saying where to get individual widgets for that extension which could be used on MediaWiki. --Carlb 04:34, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll try to find out more about the widget extension. I know Uncyclopedia and the abandoned Ikkepedia version has the widget, maybe it's a wikia thing. --Trubadurix 08:50, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
edit Sorry to bother you
I always regret that I have no better things to say, except to complain all the time. So this time:
Hi! How are you doing? There has been some mysterious lagging lately and some pictures don't work. (Well there was the complain... =( ) Do you happen to know anything about this? Black Eagle 19:06, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Well now the whole Hikipedia is down... Black Eagle 19:24, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Now everything is under control, except some of the images don't show properly. Black Eagle 21:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
A few of the problem images appear to be .BMP's that have been saved under non-.BMP names: Halko.png, Mylaf.jpg, MIkiii.jpg, Nallekarkit.jpg, Mikkisuurinn.jpg, Ahterin_kunta.png, Röhmöfantti.jpg, Donuts-spread2.jpg, KenraaliSanttu.jpg, Tyypillinenlehmä.jpg, OOO.jpg, Pim.jpg, Pukki.jpg, Leppis.gif, Vaakis.jpg, Murneli.jpg, Nimetön.jpg, Ei_tyttö.jpg, Leppiskrt.gif, Spiritism.jpg, Bush_idols.jpg, Hätänium.jpg, Jasso_sami.jpg, Merihirvio.jpg, Universumi.jpg and KumiankkaSaalistamassa.jpg. These are affected by this bug.
These were the only ones that I couldn't get to display properly just by going to the image description page and clicking the 'refresh' (päivitä) tab. The rest appear to be valid. --Carlb 04:25, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Dear carlb, I just discovered that the namespace table between these 2 domains acted differently, even though they seems to have same namespace configuration. For example, there is a template named 範本:SOS團列表, and it can be accessed from, but not from Seems that doesn't recognize that 範本: is a namespace prefix. May you have a check for it? --Leeyc0 09:34, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
edit Request changes for
Hi! I would like to ask you to kindly make couple of minor changes. First, we would prefer w: shortcut to reference to instead of English one. Secondly, we would like to use time in Thailand and Thai year as in Thai Wikipedia, which basically is UTC+7, and for the information on Thai year, you can see here: Thanks! --Jutiphan 22:50, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
You have MediaWiki 1.13 (which contains all bug fixes up to Feb 2008) and พิเศษ:Interwiki (which would allow you to remove the old w: shortcut and create a new one). I've changed the timezone, but I don't think there's anything else that requires me to intervene here. Thanks --Carlb 23:56, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
That was quick. Thank you very much for the changes. Thai Wikipedia took weeks if not more for such changes. --Jutiphan 02:22, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
What on earth? I tried a few days ago to go to but when it loaded the page I think it somehow redirected because I got to this Mysterious. Well, can you explain why those sites have the same content but different adress? And why there are two adresses anyway? Black Eagle 20:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
edit The close down of Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia
Today, the Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:) reported to us (Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:tw)) that she would be closed down on April 4th 2008. We need to make changes on our language links this week.--Hant 00:03, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, zh:/zh-tw: have been returning nothing but blank pages since at least last year in the PRC, and en: is now also affected. There may be other Uncyclopedias and many Wikipedia projects blocked as well. As such, I doubt that anyone will notice Simplified 伪基百科's demise, if and when it occurs. Simply deleting the zh: link from zh-tw:Special:Interwiki will leave a mess of red links, so it's probably best to wait until Simplified is actually gone and then have a robot remove the links from the articles.
The links from Wikia-hosted versions are a bit more problematic; we seem not to have a robot active here now that Qscgu9-bot has been banned at least once on en: as well as de:. There's also the problem that we have no access to update the interwiki table here; Forum:Interwiki links is a list of what currently has been awaiting update since October. Still, zh: disappearing is normal (it happened before with the debacle) so I doubt anyone would notice anything out of the ordinary. Might be best just to ignore it? --Carlb 11:37, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
The Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:) reported to us (Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:tw)) that it would not be closed down on April 4th 2008. As you say, we have done nothing in this moment. Everything just remain the same.
But I don't think English Uncyclopedia would use it's 'close down' to make a joke on April 1st. The Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia is now mostly contributed by one or two of its sysops, who are also active in the Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia. Do they think about if Wikia know its intention to close down? It may come truth! --Hant 22:52, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
edit Your concerns regarding the sysops at Uncyclopedia
They are mostly grounded in solid fact, but I think you may be missing the pulse of the wiki which you get when you deal with primarily onwiki issues as opposed to offwiki issues (a job which I greatly admire and don't in any way envy ;). What I mean by this is that, yes, we aren't growing at nearly the rate we were growing when I first joined. Hell, I joined at the END of the bubble, the burst, the surge; whatever term you want to use, that time has long gone. We're getting to a point now where it's less about letting the bubble grow, and more about making sure the surface tension doesn't cause it to asplode. That overwrought metaphor is meant not to make me seem more pompous than I already am, but rather to help express my belief that growth != progress. Let me tell you what I mean.
Wikipedia is an ever-growing wiki in which thousands of edits are made literally every second of every day. They've grown well past 2 million articles and are fast on the way to 2.5 and eventually 3 million. That's all well and good, if not for the fact that every day the very users who made Wikipedia what it was/is become more and more disillusioned with what it's become. I point to the developer of AutoWikiBrowser and the vigilance barnstar dude as examples of what happens when this occurs.
I fear every day that more and more people are coming to this point on this wiki. All the time, it's one long and drawn-out argument after another making absolutely no progress. This guy even made a comment on the Manticore op thingamajig.
You might be asking yourself, "Why the hell did this guy come to my talk page to ramble?" I'm getting there, don't fear. You have some well-founded concerns. I find myself reverting reverts all the time, and it's annoying. But such is life. People make mistakes. Sometimes pages that shouldn't be deleted are deleted. We may lose a user, even. This isn't desirable, but it's certainly not worth losing sleep over. Look, I know that you have the wiki's best interests at heart as much as I or anyone else, but sometimes I fear that when a user like you, with such a long, illustrious history at Uncyc (2nd only to MadMax in contribs) only comes back every so often to voice dissent in a forum, it adds to the problem rather than helping toward a solution.
That's my piece. I say it with the utmost respect and without indictment, just a simple statement that sometimes the best way to improve quality is to improve morale, and morale doesn't improve when people come back just to say we're doing it wrong. Even if it is true.
And there you have it. It only took me 3,000 characters to say.~~ Sir Ljlego, GUN  [talk] 00:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't think I have what could be called "a long, illustrious history" here. Most of my edits are from ages ago, starting May 2005 (back before Uncyclopedia had any additional languages or any ties with Wikia) and ending soon after Chron sold the domain in July 2006. Most of my involvement since then has been with the Uncyclopedia Babble Project, where I somehow managed to rack up 3000 edits on pt:, a language in which I am dangerously dependent on Babblefish to understand anything. Mostly reverts of page/section blanking and categorisation of templates. Even here, many of these edits are trivial - moving pages to Babel:, adding categories to pages and templates which had none and minor maintenance tasks done long ago. Don't be fooled. :)
Sure, to some extent I do believe in the whole "don't bite the n00bs" concept - and the thirty-plus-years bans being handed out can be a bit excessive. I'm not saying Wikipedia is better or worse, they are becoming a mess of bureaucratic policies and out-of-control robots who have nothing better to do than mislabel user-created images and content as plagiarism and delete it. Still, I am getting tired of having to explain why sysops of other Uncyclopedia languages are being banned here for 'infinite' (which has happened at least once) or why entire entire countries and states are being CVP'ed. Sometimes we do delete a marginal but not unsalvageable page, only to see utter rubbish take its place. That usually leads, a few deletions and re-creations later, to the CVP bin. I do still have robots running on most non-Wikia in the Uncyclopedia series, and am having these constantly prompt asking whether a link to a perfectly-valid topic that should exist here should be pulled as it now links across namespaces (to CVP). And yes, quite often they does seem to be creating inbound links to Wikia pages that don't link back.
Que sera, sera, je suppose. It's all largely out of my hands at this point. --Carlb 10:53, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
edit Account hacking or what?
In (Finnish Uncyclopedia project) it seems, that most of the users have problems/fail to log in, because their passwords have been reseted or hacked. Do you have any information on this? This is a major problem, because most of the sysops fail to log in as well.--C12 09:20, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
This appears to be a temporary problem caused by a MediaWiki upgrade. The new version (1.14alpha) has changed the way the passwords are stored, so attempts to log on during the upgrade install may have given errors. --Carlb 10:37, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The site is back to having both servers up and running, so should be back to normal. It's still very heavily loaded (the two servers are moving a combined total of 4500 gigabytes a month at the moment) but hopefully some of the problems from the server replacement and the MediaWiki 1.14alpha upgrade are resolved. --Carlb 04:39, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Dear Carlb,
When I try to save my edit on zh-tw uncyclopedia, the following appear:
edit Dear Carlb
Hikipedia (finnish uncyclopedia) has problem. It's like this:
(Can't contact the database server: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 (sophia)).
Can you fix it? -- 12:11, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
The previous problem has gone already but could you help us with this? [2] There are two reported errors, both are some parser errors. The font is bigger than usually and page loads a little slower than usual. The lower error occurs also at Main page, the one with "...line 48". Any ideas how to fix this? --Black Eagle 18:03, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
edit Flash Game in zh-tw
Nice to meet you. I am an uncyclopedian in zh-tw uncyclopedia. Have you seen our UnGame? Do you like it? We made many special games with template:CGI. However we (or only I) believe that's not the maximum of UnGame and hope to improve it. That's why I think it's good to enable zh-tw uncyclopedia to support flash. In this moment, we can use <youtube> to show flash but it's not enough. Optimally, we should install flash extension which let us can input value in edit page. Or at least it should allow users to upload swf file.
Please think about it. (Please forgive my poor English writing skill)--SunnyChow 04:32, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
edit About ja server-down in present and my announcement
Good afternoon. Japanese Uncyclopedia is under the down manyly but it is certainly less than 156th.
I started the action because of my humility and laziness. I add an article about the status of japanese uncyclopedia as the user subpage. Would you add that in your watchlist?--Ore tatieno 12:46, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
edit zh-tw signature problem
Dear carlb, I just found a signature problem. I use a customized signature, and today I want to make a change. I changed the "Real name" in "Preferences" (screenshot 1) as usual, but found that it isn't working. When I saved the "Real name", it just reverted to the default signature (screenshot 2). No matter what I entered in the "Real name" field, it still didn't apply to the signature. May you check for it? Thank you. --Leeyc0 11:06, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Forget it. I found the problem now. MediaWiki has changed a lot in the past years. I should use the "Signature" field now, instead of "Real name" in the past days. --Leeyc0 07:50, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
edit zh-tw is being hacked
Dear carlb, there is an user from vandalized, whose expresses his anger to an bureaucrat at He replaced a lot of pages, and I reverted most of them. Can you lock the site, let only logged-in user to edit?--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 11:00, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Should all of these (cmn, yue, zh-hk and zh-tw) point to the same place? Also, how could there be a pagecount for zombie if zombie is, pretty much by definition, dead?
I'm still trying to get hardware to upgrade the site; it looks like it will be at least another two weeks before I can add a third server. The "ko" wiki is separate from the others, however, they have their own host in Korea. It's that host that's returning "입니다. edit Hey Carlb
Are you still interested in hosting the project? Reply to my email, please.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 12:42, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
With no disrespect to Carlb and the huge amount of hard work that he puts into running the sister sites of Uncyclopedia I think we need to find a seperate alternative, one that isn't reliant upon individuals. Having said that it would be interesting to hear exactly what Carlb could offer. :) -- Sir Mhaille Icons-flag-gb (talk to me)
I am still here, e-mail carlb (at) kingston net or carlb613 (at) hotmail. I shall be upgrading the existing server capacity soon (Japan and Brazil versions of Uncyclopedia, and a few others, are growing at a tremendous rate) and would be able to host a project if you want one put online on some other domain name. Just let me know :_) --Carlb 10:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I just want to confirm that you understand what I said in about zh-tw Uncyclopedia section. I knew you are busy on upgrading the servers, and may not have time to entertain my enquiry. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 13:12, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
edit Follow-up of zh-tw Uncyclopedia
  1. Thank you for modify non-wikia Uncyclopedias' name.php. But I don't see cmn on zh-tw Uncyclopedia's "Special:Preferences - User profile - Language". Is it impossible to add cmn?
  2. When I type cmn: and yue: on the searchbox in some non-wikia Uncyclopedias, and enter. No redirection to zh-tw Uncyclopedia. I think at least this moment, no interwikis of cmn ($1) and yue ($1) are set.
  3. I saw the interwikis of zh-hk are not updated in many non-wikia Uncyclopedias. The zh-hk would be$1.
  4. The clock of is now +8. All of the five:,, 偽基百科.com, 偽基百科.biz, seem to be redirected. Thank You.--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 09:44, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
edit Adnormal
  1. The Pagecount Robot in go back to the old, no zombie and updated fields version.
  2. Now, lose some pics. For example, the small yellow alphabet w showed in the main page disappear (now the text Wikia). But the zh-tw Uncyclopedia's pics seem to be returned.
  3. Please once again restore the new name.php to non-Wikia Uncyclopedias. The name of Chinese variants return to the old one in some non-Wikia Uncyclopedias.
  4. The clock of return to UTC, not +8. Please copy all the mediawikis from to All mediawikis in disappear.
  5. In log-out mode, the non-default namespaces set in zh-tw Uncyclopedia disappear. The default namespaces (like template, user) return to their old name, not these modified long ago.
Good Luck! --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 09:55, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Looks to be upgrade-related; one of the three servers appears not to be handling Special:Namespaces properly; there are also a few wiki-specific changes (such as language names, extensions in use on one language only and the like) which will need to be reinstalled. Incoming requests are directed quasi-randomly to one of the multiple available servers, so the extension looks fine on some pages and not others. --Carlb 19:28, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
  1. Pagecount Robot: not sure.
  2. Pics: OK.
  3. Name.php: Unsolved.
  4. Clock of Unsolved.
  5. Namespaces and mediawikis of zh-tw Uncyclopedia: Unsolved. When it comes back to normal?
  6. New problem: See Babel. The sidebar appears.
edit Trouble at Hikipedia
Dear Carlb, there is widespread confusion at Hikipedia as strange and sinister omens haunt the site. As I discover reading the posts above, the situation is by no means unique. Since early November, subprojects (Hömppäpedia, Hikikirjasto etc.) and their namespaces have experienced severe trouble and continue to be inaccessible for users who haven't logged in. Things have taken a turn for the worse recently as registered users (including me) have been unable to access their user and/or discussion pages. No namespaces that include our insane vöwëls (Ä, Ö) seem to function properly. This is a major drawback as the Finnish word for user happens to be käyttäjä. The problems seem to fade at times, but they keep recurring. Therefore, the hopelessly incompetent users of Hikipedia have decided to bring this sad state of affairs to your knowledge in the hope that you might be able to investigate its causes and remedy it. Please. --Näpölëön 09:44, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
We were using an extension which allowed admins to add or remove custom namespaces (the code is here). This was done in late 2006 after plans to include a namespace editor (like the one in the WikiData 1.6 branch) in the main MediaWiki 1.7+ code never materialised. The extension was a kludge, based heavily on the special:interwiki editor, but it was working... until a new server (2 x Opteron-2346, 16Gb RAM, 4x750Gb HDD's) was added alongside the existing servers a week ago. The namespaces extension has never operated reliably on the new server, which may account for much of the weirdness which you and others describe. Namespaces like käyttäjä are part of the core MediaWiki translations but there are other administrador-created 'aliases' (such as cat: for categoria: on the Brazil's Desciclopédia) which will need to be supported by some other means - perhaps a replacement of the old special:namespaces with something more stable. Worst-case, I rewrite the extension. --Carlb 18:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
The Pagecount Robot, Pics, Clock of and Namespaces were back to normal. (As you said, the namespaces management right has gone. But make namespaces work is much important.)
However, can you restore the new name.php to non-Wikia Uncyclopedias? The name of Chinese variants return to the old one in some non-Wikia Uncyclopedias (include Babel).
And, Babel no longer the printable version displayed.
edit zh-tw namespace configuration
Dear Carlb, we discovered that administrators are unable to configure namespaces. May you restore this function? --Leeyc0 00:06, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I have overlooked the previous paragraph. Now I know the reason why the namespace editor disappeared. --Leeyc0 07:23, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
edit Mediawiki in
Thank You, the name.php is OK. I also saw a new method to make the sidebar disappear.
I discovered something special at It is normal in log-out mode. But in log-in mode No change showed in Special:Allmessages. But in Mediawiki namespace, all Mediawikis are still there. As it does not affect the well-being of, and more importantly, this is just for your reference. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 01:29, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
If you see one set of language messages while logged in and another logged-out, odds are you've set your language to something other than zh-hk in your user preferences - most likely because Hong Kong uses Taiwan's database in its entirety, including the userlist. As for being able to set language and namespace names, it looks like there is an extension that may be able to do that Special:Configure. That extension is overkill, containing many settings which we don't need or which will need to be configured as read-only. It would however allow things such as project name, wiki language, namespaces and aliases to be set from a web interface. --Carlb 18:03, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
The problem of Chinese variants. I understand now. That mean the same mediawiki, I have to copy 6 more times to sometime like mediawiki:abc/zh-abc and mediawiki:abc/zh-bcd to fix it. What a big trouble brought by the Zh Wikipedia and Zh-yue Wikipedia!--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 17:04, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
edit Special:Configure
I checked Special:Configure. Special:Configure seems to be too dangerous. It may be better to unintall Special:Configure if zh-tw Uncyclopedia and other Carat's Uncyclopedias are not go independent.
Special:Configure is helpless to the zh-tw Uncyclopedia, as log-in users from Hong Kong may choose zh-hk as their language preference (Chinese has too many variants). Special:Configure cannot made languages like zh-hk disable. Therefore, I still have to unitify the mediawikis of the two sets by hand.
The only good thing of Special:Configure may be the partly-functioned namespace setting, which can add new namespace. If you want to rewrite the namespace editor, please consider:
  1. how to made change to the namespace name (default or non-default name also) without delete the namespace-ID,
  2. how to change the namespace-ID (for example, from 88 to 100).
--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 00:46, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, any namespace editor should be able to change the name (or aliases) of an existing namespace, but I haven't seen one that would take everything from one existing numbered namespace and renumber it to a differently-numbered namespace. Even moving pages from mainspace that have "Forum:..." in the names so that they're in "Forum:" namespace (instead of inaccessible in mainspace) seems to require running a maintenance/namespaceDupes.php command-line script. Pity that didn't go through with the original plan to include a proper namespace editor in MW 1.7 - we needed this years ago. --Carlb 20:35, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
edit thumb image cannot be generated
Dear carlb, there is an thumb image that cannot be generated. May you check for it? The affected page is Sigmund FreudImage:佛洛伊德精神分析.jpg)--Leeyc0 14:09, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Will it be the result of the newly Special:Configure. The MediaWiki update seems to have problem. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 16:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Looks to be an ImageMagick problem - if I switch back to libgd it works fine. ImageMagick is not a part of the core MediaWiki package nor an extension, it's a separate convert utility used (optionally) to resize images. Then again, Dr. Freud is probably ready to diagnose the new server as being obsessed in some unhealthy manner with its own motherboard by now... --Carlb 20:30, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
By the way, I just discovered that when I tried to update MediaWiki:Sitenotice, the change is not reflected, and when we look at Special:AllMessages, MediaWiki:Sitenotice still has the old value. May you check it? --Leeyc0 04:17, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
edit MediaWiki cycle
How much time would be taken for the updates in MediaWiki namespace applied to the site? Sometimes I saw the changes in Spacial:Allmessages immediately, sometimes a few hours, and sometimes in days. (Would it be in months?) Do you know why? --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 00:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
The MediaWiki messages seem to be being stored based on the setting $wgMessageCacheType; this allows selection of if (and where) to cache the messages, but I don't see anywhere to set an expiry time. It appears that every time httpd is restarted, the APC cache is cleared, removing the old messages. --Carlb 14:05, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
edit forum
Zh-tw Uncyclopedia are testing its forum. Do you know how to make the Forum_talk disappear (like the pic)?
I saw the namespace Forum_talk in English Uncyclopedia. so we set one in zh-tw Uncyclopedia also. Do you know the usages of it?--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 10:56, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
The code which hides the forum_talk tab is in mediawiki:common.css and on en.uncyclopedia looks like:
/* Kills "Forum talk:" links --Algorithm */
body.ns-110 #ca-talk { display: none !important }
body.ns-110 #ca-nstab-forum { margin-right: 16px }
Replace 110 with the namespace number of whatever namespace you use for Forum:
The Forum_talk namespace isn't very useful; it only exists because MediaWiki normally deals with namespaces in pairs, with the odd-numbered namespaces being talk or discussion. If it were useful, mediawiki:common.css wouldn't be being modified to make it go away. --Carlb 14:05, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
It's work. Thank you! Can you put the zh:tw Forum link (zh-tw:論壇:首頁) on Village Dump? It's locked. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 12:41, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
edit Katakana
Why ニホンゴ? This is so skillful that I cannot understand the humour. Not funny. In this case, Katakana expresses stupidness of the editor that decided about. --Ore tatieno 13:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Just for Ore tatieno: ニホンゴ paired with アンサイクロペディア. ニホンゴ is not Japanese? Who has asked you to have fun on zh-tw Uncyclopedia? It's only affected zh-tw Uncyclopedia! Chinese script used by Chinese. The term Japanese ought to be in Japanese own script, that is Katakana. If you like, you can termed all cmn yue zh zh-classical zh-cn zh-hans zh-hant zh-hk zh-mo zh-my zh-sg zh-tw zh-yue as any term you think Chinese can identify it as Chinese language on your ja Uncyclopedia. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 15:59, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh! It's so funny! I have never had such a thing that regarded as a virtual fantasy! So lovely! Thank you! --Ore tatieno 17:16, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Ore tatieno, I don't believe you can found other terms than the original 13 (compromise to be coexist in a single Zh Wikipedia) or the 13 terms I used (respect each place) to describe these 13 Chinese language codes. This time changing "special:configure" in zh-tw Uncyclopedia is for deleting namespace 27 (forum talk) and add back some namespace aliases. Then zh-tw found "special:configure" has bugs, and need the help of Carlb. If you like the Chinese script "日本語", no problem.--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 07:56, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
In fact, it reminded me the first that I found the term both on the Uncyclopedia:Multilingual coordination and Main Page. I have known about that from the Japanese article, Diary. It is our sence that I have written above. But your previous comment made the global wit clear to me.
It is really strange that the caption of interwiki link follows like this, of course without that in Traditional Chinese edition. I support this situation, this fresh approaches and you. Excuse me having stoned. --Ore tatieno 16:56, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Now, as you want, using Chinese script "日本語". Are your ja Uncyclopedia have a Chinese script name "八百科事典"? I saw "八百科事典" on zh wikipedia. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 02:46, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I have no rights to bespeak to Taiwanese edition. Please do as you want, too. 八百科事典(はっぴゃっかじてん, Happyakka Jiten) is the way to call Uncyclopedia in both traditional and elegant ethos of Japan. It is inferable that アンサイクロペディア has been used frequently after the World War II. Thank You! --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 07:56, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Does this mean that the $wgLanguage code for becomes "zh-tw" instead of "zh-hk"? --Carlb 08:19, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Zh-tw is OK. Zh-tw Uncyclopedia set mediawiki:abcde/zh-hk and mediawiki:abcde/zh-tw as {{Mediawiki:abcde}} on major system messages. After user login, if mediawiki:/zh-hk and mediawiki:/zh-tw run smoothly, nearly no different.
An unique $wgLanguage code of "zh-tw" may help the wiki run smoothly. I saw $wgLanguage codes of "zh-tw" on and "zh-hk" on made the mediawiki:/zh-hk and mediawiki:/zh-tw not work on both sides.
This is for your reference, Wikia runs 10 or 12 Uncyclopedias that have Carat version.
I uploaded an image of the bug of $wgRestrictionLevels of special:configure:
--Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 01:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
And now, carlb-san, there have been also some bugs on Japanese Uncyclopedia. They have resolved most bugs to change some special pages that had appeared after your updates. We have seen your upgrade as not to be completed. I may be going to ask about rinsing after your work. S'il vous plait. --Ore tatieno 16:56, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank Carlb.
edit Updates lost
What happened to zh-tw Uncyclopedia? All updates in last few days lost, the site came back to a week ago. --Hant (Talk) - For your safety, China Free! - 01:05, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Ja Uncyclopedia has also rewound to a few weeks ago though it may be the supposed situation for you, Carlb-san. But we, Uncyclopedians onto Toronto cannot preliminarily predict those like troubles at all. There is seen no rock-steady clue about servers at that city on Canada. At least, I am not a member of the mileage program of Air Canada. I cannot ride on airplanes for a half of a day, because of my fear, in the first place. Could you show us the schedule of servers in the time to come, if it will be planned? --Ore tatieno 07:24, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
In addition, blocked IP users have reactivated for this rewind. I am also afraid that they would give bad influences down to your update and/or upgrade. Which do our SYSOPs treat better, to ignore, to re-block or not to care about you?--Ore tatieno 16:10, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Dear Carlb,
Finnish Hikipedia is also suffering from the kind of amnesia described above and has apparently lost updates made since mid-November. The community is baffled by the situation. Several superstitious users are afraid to edit the site before the lost edits have been restored (if, indeed, they will or can be restored) as they fear this could bring about serious disturbances in the time-space continuum, or something, and complicate the situation even further. As the community, faced with uncertainty, couldn't think of anything to do, it decided to contact you in order to get that great feeling of "at least we tried". Some users are keen to know what actually happened but most are just waiting for normalization. --Näpölëön 09:10, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
We'll be very pleased if you can enlighten us :) --God of Mercy 15:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Dear Carlb, I just discovered I cannot edit any page after I have logged in. The session lost message is shown (Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. If it still does not work, try logging out and logging back in.) when I tried to edit a page. Please to control session data processing of hungarian Unciklopedia, because I can't edit, only anonim. It's a very big problem, because I'm a singular operative admin. Thanks: OsvátA Palackposta 08:03, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm just going to release Neciclopedia (Moldovan Uncyclopedia), but I need some things modified:
  • New logo. I'd like to use the Communist potato logo.
  • Top20 Code (some sort of national Google Analytics. It's both a ranking system and an analytics one). -- 20:21, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
edit Pages lost in Hikipedia
Hi. We in Hikipedia seem to have lost some of our pages, and even I as an admin and a bureaucrat cannot undelete them, it seems like they have never existed. edit user reported they have difficulties logging in to zh-tw
Dear carlb,
A user reported that he is unable to log in. A sql error "1205: Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction (roberto)" is caught by "User::invalidateCache". May you check for it?
--Leeyc0 11:37, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
There is a same error with function "User::incEditCount" when I am saving my edit without "logging" out.--SunnyChow 10:25, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
The server turns out to be unstable for a few months already and all sort of strange errors comes out. All personal preferences would spontaneously reset for no reason, slow response, database lockout and even 403 forbidden error "You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Server at Port 80". May you check for it throughly? --Leeyc0 13:06, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Reset items in special:preferences may be a result of mediawiki version upgrades - there are differences in the way MW 1.16 stores this info compared to old versions such as MW 1.14. If this is the case, a user changing the preferences manually (for those few users who are affected) will resolve most or all of these issues. --Carlb 04:23, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
I have changed back the perferences several times, but seems that the preferences will reset back some time later for no reason. And sometimes we found there are some difficulties when saving the preferences, I have to press the save button for a few times to make the preferences really save. --Leeyc0 14:52, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
edit RC list in fi:
The advanced setting for fi: RC-list seems to have a problem. When I click the little arrows that are supposed to open the list of edits on a certain page, the list doesn't open.--C12 13:57, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Do you have JavaScript enabled in-browser? The "advanced" version of special:recentchanges requires this, the standard version does not. --Carlb 04:23, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
edit Unciklopedia is in a really bad shape
Hi Carlb!
Hungarian Unciklopedia is again a step closer to the bottomless chasm of Nothingness.
  • For example, if you want to go to an existing user or user talk page, sometimes the software responds with giving a new page with no content, but if you refresh it for a random number of times, it gaves you the page you wanted. There are other anomalies too and they are getting worse with time:
  • Main contributors list item is no more, instead we see <contributors-toolbox>
  • Reference extension is not working anymore. (<cite_reference_link>)
  • Templates sometimes are not working.
Gremlin 14:33, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
If you're seeing text like <contributors-toolbox> and <cite_reference_link>, this likely means that you are missing the corresponding messages in the MediaWiki: namespace mediawiki:contributors-toolbox and mediawiki:cite_reference_link. In most cases, the missing messages on upgrade will be for text created to translate extensions - not core MediaWiki code. For problem templates, check the HTML code in the template to ensure that any tags you open are closed (in the correct order). Older MediaWiki versions would close some tags automatically, 1.14 and 1.16 do not. Templates which use the random <choose> / <option> tags will have to be called using (for instance) {{expletive|}} and not {{expletive}} - otherwise you will see problems when using the same random template multiple times on the same page. Are there any specific pages that I should be viewing that are giving errors/blank? --Carlb 04:17, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
I am currently re-installing the database for UnCommons, which has been giving errors "unable to access database server (oscar)".
