The Balloon welcomes you!
Hello, Captain gull, and welcome to Uncyclopedia! Thanks for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If not, the door's right over there... no, a little more to your left...Not that far, goddammit! ...Yeah. Anyway, here are a few good links for nooblets:
If you read anything at all, make it the above two links, particularly the second one. If you want to find out more about Uncyclopedia, or need more help with something, try these:
If you feel like asking someone for help, feel free to ask me on my talk page, in the help forums, or on the Uncyclopedia IRC channel. With the forums and the IRC, keep in mind that the first response of the community is almost always general silliness. We are after all, a silly wiki, run by numerous silly, silly people. When you edit discussion pages, though, make sure you sign your name, using four tildes (~~~~) or the "sign" button (Button sig), above the edit box. This'll automatically produce your name and the date, and lets everyone know who the hell you are. Signing will also help you avoid the {{tilde}} template.
When you write articles, make sure you start with enough on the page so that it's not deletion-quality. If you must create a stub that you plan to expand on in the near future, use a {{WIP}} or {{Construction}} tag to mark it as a work-in-progress. However, if you leave a tagged WIP unedited for a full week, it'll wind up huffed. If the idea of impending deletion doesn't appeal to you, you should like I do, and start pages in userspace, first. This means making a page like User:Captain gull/Article about stuff. In userspace just about anything goes(save for the obvious no-nos, like shock pics or other stupidity), and you can build and rework your page(s) at your leisure. Once it's done, just move into mainspace, maybe getting a pee review at some point to get constructive feedback on your article.
For new users seeking help, the Uncyclopedian Adopt-a-Noob program is there to bring experienced editors straight to you. Browse our list of available mentors, and leave them a message on their talk page.
Lastly, and most importantly, have fun with it! As a comedy wiki, that's kinda what Uncyc is for. Enjoy yourself, and remember to never take anything anyone here says too seriously. We have serious moments, but generally we stay pretty laid back. Also, I'm not a bot. Just 'cause you saw a similar message on a bunch of other users' pages doesn't mean I didn't have to copy and paste this one onto yours with my own meatsack of a finger. Anyways, welcome to the machine! - T.L.B. Baloon WotM, UotM, FPrize, AotM, ANotM, PLS, UN:HS, GUN 05:26, Mar 6

edit Welcome Back

I noticed your Alain Robert article that you have unfinished in your user space. Could do with a pic or two and perhaps a few more lines but deserves main spacing. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 06:32, August 6, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, it gave me the inclination to add some more bits to finish it off and move it to main space. --Captain gull (talk) 09:45, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
I added a link and quote to echo your joke about the 'spyderman'. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 12:46, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
I thought about adding 'future' buildings Alain Robert wants to climb paragraph. Perhaps the 1776 Liberty tower in New York, as a mark of Franco-American friendship and a snub to the Brits who refuse him permits to do the same tricks in Britain?? Don't have to and may have a chance as a feature. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 12:51, August 7, 2013 (UTC)
Very creative and funny! I've listed it in {{Recent}} to advertise it on the Main Page. Now get in the habit of submitting {{Redirect|User:Captain gull/Alain Robert}} to QVFD, because you no longer need the name in your userspace to work, so we can delete the redirect. Quibbles: The article ought to have another photo at the start (or move the existing photo to the start); and the fact that it ends with two lists may induce incompetent anonymous authors on the night shift to add crap to the article forever. Thanks for the contribution! Spıke ¬ 13:12 7-Aug-13
I have added a King Kong image but perhaps a close up of the climber is required. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 14:18, August 7, 2013 (UTC)

edit Alain Robert

Hi. Thanks for your recent edit to your story. As you can see I added another list but this is your article and I would like to nominate it as a feature. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 07:02, August 12, 2013 (UTC)

I like the last list, it adds a kind of closure to the article. I've made some final minor edits to the page so you're welcome to nominate it. Thanks for the support! Captain gull (talk) 10:17, August 12, 2013 (UTC)
I have nommed. Don't be shy, vote for your own article! --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 12:13, August 12, 2013 (UTC)
And thank you for fleshing out those lists into paragraphs; this makes the article seem much more complete, and makes overnight Anons much less likely to append new list items. Spıke ¬ 04:00 17-Aug-13
I've tried making the Injuries section less listy as well as that was suffering from the same problem. Perhaps still needs a silly picture at the end. Captain gull (talk) 03:49, August 18, 2013 (UTC)
Yep could do with one. By the way I think your article will turn out to be a definite feature by now, so great work. Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 06:40, August 18, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you to all who voted and helped make it a feature! I'll try not to disappear again for another three years now... Captain gull (talk) 00:35, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

edit VFD, again

Thank you for your votes on VFD, even on articles where you have No Dog In The Fight. Regarding satire James Bond plots, there is something like this already at James Bond (character). That article got voted onto the main page, so we presume it doesn't need an injection of more comedy; but if you ever got motivated to write the article on Bond-movie plots, you could install a link from that article to yours. Spıke ¬ 01:54 6-Sep-13

No problem, just getting a taste for helping to improve the quality of the site. I might even attempt the Bond thing when I get the chance. Captain gull (talk) 03:40, September 6, 2013 (UTC)

Good work! You are on the Front Page--and above the fold! Spıke ¬ 23:49 10-Oct-13

edit Pssst

I enjoyed reading the page developing in your userspace. But it seems unlikely that anyone will look up "Pssst" in our encyclopedia. I see from Wikipedia that there is a real game, and it really was published in 1983. You are writing for a niche audience! If that is okay, please proceed! But do link to your new article from the article on the Spectrum, or devise a navigation template (like this one) by which Sinclair owners can see all relevant pages. Spıke ¬ 11:15 16-Oct-13

I think among old Spectrum users, this game is probably one of the better-known 'classics' and might come up in a Google search and provide a modicum of amusement for someone. I'll definitely link to it from the Spectrum article, however the small amount of Sinclair-related articles probably wouldn't warrant an entire template. I notice the Jet Set Willy article (another Spectrum game) is linked via the Mass Media template so that might be appropriate. Captain gull (talk) 11:46, October 16, 2013 (UTC)

I see you are "tidying up" this article. You are welcome to move it to the main encyclopedia, if you can figure out the new pulldown menus in the interface behind the Move button at the top of the article.

And I see from your user page that you are a fan of progressive rock. I've found several great bands (most recently Subsignal from Germany) on prog.fm (apparently out of New Jersey USA) that has free streaming and is still too penny-ante to have advertising. There is a ticker on the web by which to identify artists and tracks and see how many others are tuned in (generally a couple dozen). Spıke ¬ 00:06 18-Oct-13

Thanks for the nom! I'm just going to update the nav template next and link from ZX Spectrum. And I'll be sure to check out your recommendation. Captain gull (talk) 00:26, October 18, 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much Captain for your wonderful proofread of my article. I never realised how many mistakes I had made so it was much appreciated! Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 08:34, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

You're most welcome! From the desk of the Department of Corrections. Captain gull (talk) 10:00, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

edit User:Captain gull/Dynamo‎

Three comments at this preliminary stage:

  1. The article is clearly for a very small niche audience. Throw other readers a sop, possibly including more clever phrasing. "As is befitting" introduces such phrasing; but your list of "mantras" might not relate to anything for readers outside the dialect.
  2. Your list format for the individual spells, if this article arrives in mainspace, I fear will induce unfunny, anonymous, overnight writers to add to it ad infinitum.
  3. The very first sentence has to pull the reader in. The one you have now, especially with "25th-level" and an inside joke for BBC viewers, tells me I'm not the target audience. You need a short, snappy sentence just before this to whet my appetite.

Happy editing! Spıke ¬ 00:03 21-Mar-14

Oh OK then, I thought this ridiculous TV show was more widespread around the globe. Thanks for the feedback. Captain gull (talk) 01:03, March 21, 2014 (UTC)

I am a notoriously bad authority on who watches what television. But "BBC" appears nowhere in the Wikipedia disambiguation page. Ignore my pronouncement on the size of your potential audience, maybe, and consider my other feedback. Spıke ¬ 01:33 21-Mar-14

To be honest I had no idea which TV channel it's on in the UK and I just went with BBC as I couldn't be bothered fact-checking and the fewer facts the better, right? And yeah I'll most likely drop the lists as they don't add much to the comedy other than fit with the Dungeons & Dragons rulebook vibe. Captain gull (talk) 02:00, March 21, 2014 (UTC)
Dungeons & Dragons! Yikerooney. That takes me back! Is it a 'religion' that still exists? --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 09:06, March 21, 2014 (UTC)
