Réunion is called Réunion Island because all that ever goes on there is French Reunions. The French ruled the island and the British fought for it. "We meet again......" is written on the flag of the island as people so frequently reunite there its like a lergitical phenomenon. ET and Elliot were reunited as were The Beatles and the guys from Eastenders. There are so many family "reunions" taking place it's unbelievable. And there are also School/College/University reunions and reunions for nerds who are interested in comic books/weird movies. This is the place where the dead reunite and Barry Scott is planning to Reunite with Christopher Reeve (lol)! Next door (literally) is Mauritius, Réunion's long-lost twin, which is ironic because Reunion is supposed to be the place where things Reunite.

Aftermath

Réunion has not put an end to Reuniting things, preferring to be a loner with a tendency to burn things, which is why the French call it Bourbon (he who burns), not wanting to upset the island.

Language and Cultural Differences

The English language still refers to it as "Reunion", which is why Réunion is a drunken island, as Mayotte is muttering unknown French words as it lets its hangover pour out through Piton De La Fournaise.
