edit Saturday - Wednesday: Concept and development

Up until Wednesday, 5th Whenever 2010, ideas for the current colonization, which is

SCIENCE FICTION

can be hashed out here. The discussion below should be geared towards what sort of concept the article will have. All colonizers are welcome to participate in the discussion.

Sometime Thursday, 6th Whenever 2010, a general outline from these ideas will be compiled and posted somewhere around here. Other things that could happen during this planning phase include deciding which participants will be working on which sections, although that is strictly optional.

Post your opinions and ideas for SCIENCE FICTION below.

An article treating some major science fiction series from an in-universe perspective, but eventually (or maybe rather soon) it becomes clear that the author believes all of this stuff to be real. We could take proven science, i.e. gravity, and call that science fiction while explaining that the reason it is science fiction is because of something that is actually science fiction, i.e. the force, alien forces, global warming, etc. Just a thought. --Striker2117 19:28, May 1, 2010 (UTC)

I'm concerned that we may be trying to be too clever in the concept on this one. Science fiction is a genre that is ripe for ridicule based upon the inherit stupidity and over-the-top nature. I'd actually suggest we keep this a fairly straight article in regards to concept but have it peppered with comedic insight, while maintaining an encyclopaedic style - a direct spork from Wikipedia:Science Fiction. - Okay, I'd like to have this concept sewn up within the next 24 hours. To date we have the article being predomdomnantly encyclopaedic in nature, containing nerd bashing, relationship to every significant sci-fi serial to date with Star in the title (does Star fuckers incorporated count?). Obviously some commentary on the fanboy nature of sci-fi fans and the conventions. Also include Strikers concept of incorporating Science into Sci fi - maybe a section on a significant scientific figure like Einstein or Newton and make out that his work was all speculative science fiction. (Of interest here is that black holes were first speculated upon in Scifi befor they bebecame science fact, and that robotics was a word created by Asimov and has now lent itself to a field of science that in all rights should be robology or automotology). Oh, and of course lots of pictures of semi-clad men/women. Science Fiction redirects to Science fiction is my suggestion. Also I like the encylopedia spork idea. I think incorporating all that stuff is going to be very hard to make work--unless we make it all sound encyclopedic. And by the way constructed metal workers (robots) go all the way back to the ancients who invisioned Hephaestus i.e. Vulcan manufacturing golden handmaids. And the concept of communication sattelites was made by Arthur C. Clarke who later kicked himself when they really were invented, because as a scientist he could actually have worked on craating the real thing first. You put the image in? I thought Cheddar did. It's amazing as is, what can you do to improve it? As for Science fiction, when it starts it will probably evolve quickly and that's where the shape of it will likely take place. Anything else to talk about, or should we just open the wine and remember the good times? Al unchain 2:42 6 5 mmx
I'm more a fan of spirits then wine. Having said that, I had a thought. The Wiki page on Sci fi has a good structure, and I'm thinking we can follow that structure up to the fanboy section, ignoring the related genres. The Scifi in different cultures doesn't really gel. But if we were to make a brief mention of all the different examples we were talking about before (Star wars, Star trek, Serenity, etc) in the sub genres as an illustration of them, that would mean that we had a reason to include them, and keep this as a coherent whole. Also by doing it that way we have a consistency of voice, which is one of the issues that the Tim Burton collab seemed to have. I was intending to have a concept fully fleshed out by now, but earning money is getting in the way. (Psst - don't tell my boss I'm here.)                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Thursday, 04:39, May 6 2010 UTC

edit Concept finalised

  • Encyclopaedic article
  • Follow structure of Wikipedia (loosely)
  • Stick to sci fi and avoid dropping into related genres, but do explore sub-genres
  • Lots of references back to Star Wars, Star Trek, Back to the Future, Doctor Who, Serenity, and a multitude of other popular sci fi franchises
  • Play on the definition of Sci fi at the start, as it's such a grey concept, but everyone knows what it is
  • Refer back to Tempest by Shakespeare as an example of Sci Fi
  • Anything else people want to add, feel free, as long as it sticks to the general idea of an encyclopaedic article.
Get to it!

edit Read the Concept please?

I just reverted a bunch of edits that were totally off the concept. I probably won't do a lot of edits to this cuz I'm not a big sci fi fan I like fantasy better. But please read the concept before you edit? :) Dame Pleb Com. Miley Spears (talk) 21:47, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

Those bunch of edits were mine and being that I was the person who nommed the topic I would appreciate if I had some leeway in shaping the style and concept. And, as a Science fiction fan, the lead sentence I wrote is probably as good as we're going to see anywhere, and I'll admit I'm wrong when a better one comes along. Al sans chains 3:53 7 5 MMX
Sorry, AiC, but I'm going to have to go with Puppy and Miley on this one. As for your shaping the concept, the concept has already been shaped by consensus and described in detail by Puppy, who is the current head of IC and in charge of this colonization. And as Puppy's assistant and the previous head of IC, I also don't see those edits as fitting the concept that was agreed on for this article. (If I recall correctly, you and I had almost this same discussion on Batman/Bruce Wayne--and when you got hold of the concept, you were a major part of getting that article featured). WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 04:08, May 7, 2010 (UTC)
I just mentioned some leeway, not to shape the overall concept. And all my edits were reverted, not a word or comma left, although the sections I had written or started all seemed to fit the concept (Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Superman). While others might not like it, I loved my lead sentence, and for me it sums up in a few words much of the history of 20th century SciFi--imnho many SF fans would find it funny. When not even a comma is kept by Miley it's like "Huh?" Al sans chains 4:19 7 5 mmx
My suspicion is Miley thought it was edits by some non-IC user. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 04:26, May 7, 2010 (UTC)
Makes no difference who wrote them, IP, me, or Mordillo. Some were on topic and should have been kept. A little of my emoted comments on this come from the end result of last months project, which I blame myself for, in part, for not being assertive enough.Al des chains 4:29 7 5 mmx
We have a difference of opinion. If a non-IC member made an edit to an IC article and I thought it was right on, I'd put a tongue-in-cheek note on that user's page encouraging them to apply to join. If it wasn't right on, I'd cut it all out, leave a note on their talk page telling them they were off concept and usually invite them to apply to join.
And please don't blame yourself for "not being assertive enough." People going around being "assertive" is I think a big part of why IC only did one colonization in six months, and why that article failed VFH almost immediately. In fact I was ready to leave IC because of the infighting until I got put in charge. When I was head, we had about the least "assertive" group I've seen---and got our first two articles featured. Remember, it took Batman two tries, and I honestly suspect our current VFH will eventually get featured. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 04:46, May 7, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry I've been busy for most of the day. Al - I liked your edits, but they made it impossible for anyone else to add onto this without it going completely tangential to the consensus concept. Having said that I've undone the edits, not reverted. This way they are kept in history and I was looking at adding a substantial amount of what you've done back in. But the concept is the framework, and that did remove the idea of the non-encyclopaedic aspect. If you wanted to rewrite the article yourself, then it would have been better to not have included this into the IC project. As it is this has become an IC article, and I undid your edits knowing that they were yours, for exactly the reason I mentioned above, and in the edit summary.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Friday, 06:54, May 7 2010 UTC
Al, do you think you can flesh out a bit more of the fight in the text boxes the way that I have? I'm thinking that if we have a few of these at various points throughout - obviously set apart from the main text - we can have an encyclopaedic article and still get the humour value of the fight in there. Also I've brought back some of your previous text and worked it into the article - I think the other examples you had would work better as illustrations of the sub-genres. I've thrown down a few paragraphs to get us started - sorry if I seem to be throwing my weight around here, but I just want to keep it on track, and I'm expecting people to rewrite what I've done better than I have (and yes, I'm looking at you two, Fredd and Al.)                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Friday, 11:46, May 7 2010 UTC

edit The history of science fiction

Now that I'm no longer the head of IC I don't have to be so diplomatic (Puppy does, though, heh heh). I'm not saying there isn't salvageable material in this section, but as it is now it sounds largely random and off concept. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 19:54, May 7, 2010 (UTC)

The big problem is that if we are going off of the Wikipedia page, it's generally just one big paragraph full of names and links with no room for funny. So it has to be expanded out. Also, the police box is a reference to Dr. Who (as stated in the concept) and Heinlein, Assimov, and Clarke were the three big Sci-Fi writers of the mid-90s. --Sirrah CatshirE Chess the Striker2117 20:02, May 7, 2010 (UTC)
The mid 50s to the mid 90's, with Bradbury thrown in. Putting funny in about Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Burroughs, etc. will bring it around to the Star Wars Star Trek stuff and all the other material mentioned in the concept. Why not just work on those sections now and let some of the early sections shape themselves? Thanks. Al des chains a few minutes after the last post

I'm trying to write some of the history and keep getting caught up in facts with little funny. The Orson Welles bit doesn't work, and so we have (seems I'm trying to talk my way through it here) Verne, Wells, and Burroughs as the Big Three who predate the other big uns of Heinein, Asimov, Bradbury and Clarke (skipping over John Campbell, E.E. Smith, the whole '1930s and 1940s pulp era). It's doable in broad strokes like that, and I'll dive back in and see what's there. Does anyone like the Plato stuff? Not sure I do any more, maybe we can actually start sci-fi with Genesis as the first "scientific tall tales" book told around campfires to ancient nerds (who organized the first sci-tall-tales convention and dressed as their favorite biboical character). Nah. And Hubbard was actually a major sci-fi figure and a member of the the L.A. writer's circle before, as Heinlein said about him, "he ascended into heaven". 'Al rambling 3:21 9 5 MMX

I've thrown evolution in as a see also and was thinking the same re creationism or intelligent design. If we're doing "real" pre-science fiction science fiction, Hephaestus i.e. Vulcan had metal handmaids, i.e. robots made out of gold. And there's the story of Icarus and his father Daedalus who constructed wings out of feathers and wax. They of course flew until Icarus flew too close to the sun and the heat melted the wax. Although the sub chapter for the particular genres are just thrown in as possible examples, but this would be, in my mind, the most logical place to put in a brief about different specific examples. Superhero genre is actually slightly different to superhuman, but enough overlap that it will work. I would like to include Galaxy quest in here somewhere, especially as we're going to be pointing out the fanboy community and all it's foibles. As for the sub chapters for fandom - honestly I have no idea on what would work best there. The concept and the scope here is fairly vast, so having that as an inclusive in this article may just be overload, and we might be better off dragging that back to a separate article, and just having a brief mention here will be enough. I've left Red Dwarf and Spaceballs out of the above, as well as Foundation, 2001 and Dune, not because I don't believe they should be included, but just because I also don't want to over-extend the concept. But whoever wants to write about whichever particular example of scifi is welcome to do so and add it in where ever it would fit as an example of this genre. I've just manipulated the fantastic work done on Hard SF to show you what I mean.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Monday, 02:01, May 10 2010 UTC

Brave New World? Cool--I hope. Ridley Scott is good at getting the feel of a world, and Brave New World needs to feel different. And Leonardo DiCaprio is in my opinion a much better actor than some of his roles would indicate. Some of that book wouldn't pass modern-day censors, though. In many ways, much of English-speaking society is a lot more prudish than it was in the beginning of the 1930s. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 01:51, May 11, 2010 (UTC)

edit Progress report

It all seems to be going well so far. Some areas need a little more meat on their bones, and some areas need a little tightening up. I'd like to say we'll have a first draft done by Wednesday. The fanboyism hasn't been touched, but I am thinking that the mammoth amount we have so far may lead us to drop that idea.

So, from here I'm thinking:

  • Finalise the various sub-genres (Star Wars can also be classsified as Space Cowboyish)
  • Add in the examples in each

That will take us until Monday, and then:

  • Proofreed and quality check all areas
  • Sweep through to ensure consistent voice
  • Add in images relating to topic
  • Create or continue running threads

On Wednesday I would like to be able to put this up for review. As PEE works on a suck and blow basis, I'm also giving credit to IC members who work on tidying up the queue over the next few days. (Haven't worked out how yet, but I'm thinking about something. If anyone has an idea about apt recognition, feel free to let me know.)

I'm aware PLS is on at the moment, so sooner this is finished sooner we can get to our own prize-winning articles.

Good work so far, colonizers!

Personally, I'm pleased to see a lot has been done on this. I was afraid when I retired as head of IC that things would die again, and I'm very glad that hasn't happened. Way to go, Colonizers! I think there's some very good stuff in the article, but I do think a lot of it still needs some serious work. But that's OK, that's what happens with a work in progress. As I haven't done much so far other than making suggestions and gathering pics, I plan to do some serious editing/polishing. Also I know several definitions of "queue" but must confess I don't know what you mean by "tidying up the queue." Retying a ponytail or straightening the people waiting in line? How about giving us a few more days at least, this is such a large topic and to really make it fly like a goose, although I guess after the pee review also counts as time. As for Why?'s serious editing and polishing, my revert finger is locked and loaded, unless its not needed (Why? and I have different styles, but that's what a collab is for, I've been told by experts in the field). Al des chains 18:21 15 5 MMX
AiC, sure we're different; that's what makes us special. I think our styles (with a whole lot of work from others) meshed quite well on Batman/Bruce Wayne, and the voters apparently agreed. But I think my style on HowTo:Be Homeless in America was very different from my style on Sun Bees. When I'm doing a collab, I simply try to fit it with the rest. If you'll notice, the three articles for which I led the colonization are very different in style: compare Creationism to Discordianism to Bruce Wayne. I didn't set the tone or style for any of those; I simply went along with the group. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 18:32, May 15, 2010 (UTC)
By the way, I won't be doing much if anything on Science fiction for a couple of days. After that, you or any IC member is welcome to change anything you don't like. As always on a colab, I'll go with the consensus. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 18:36, May 15, 2010 (UTC)

edit A note from the Privateer of the Realm

As was mentioned a little while ago I was going to come on board as the fearless commander for the period of a month. This has meant that over the past 30 odd days I have been considering my future as the leader of this glorious team of nation builders. After much deliberation, I have decided that I will hand the reigns back to the true leader of IC, so that I can get back to writing, 'chopping, and reviewing the way that I have been previously. However, this means that I will continue to be a member of IC, working on this article until it is highlighted, along with trying to get back to working on Discordianism, which I said I would do something with in 24 hours - and that was about 4 weeks ago.

In the meantime, I'd like to get rocking on next months colonisation sooner rather than later. To that end I'd suggest that now is the time to nominate articles to be next months colonisation. Also Discordianism needs to be rewritten somewhat - if anyone has any fresh inspiration having been away from that so long feel free.

Anchors away!                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Friday, 06:04, May 28 2010 UTC

PuppyOnTheRadio did say he would head IC for 30 days and then consider the future, and he has done that. I thank him very much for keeping IC going through May.
However, I headed IC on a temporary basis myself, originally for one (1) colonization. However, I did agree to see three (3) colonizations through, which I did--Creationism, Batman Bruce Wayne, and Discordianism. I appreciate the work colonizers did during that time, and was very pleased with it. But I have completed my time as head of IC, and hope someone else who's qualified will step forward.
As for Puppy rewriting Discordianism, there are a number of helpful suggestions from various people on that article's talk page, and I'd suggest he check those out. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 15:20, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
Already planned to - in fact I have been as I've been going along. Al has done some good work on it recently as well. I'll put more on Discordianism's talk page shortly.
As for the reigns of IC, I'm throwing it open to whoever would like to pick them up.If there is no head then it will fall to group consensus as to direction, etc. I personally think that a break until July to get Discordianism and Science fiction to FA status may not be a bad move. Given the time frame of a month has been insufficient for the last few collabs, given the scope, and nothing new nominated for next month, this may be the wisest course so that we don't have IC being burnt out.                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Saturday, 20:36, May 29 2010 UTC
I have no problem with Puppy's suggestions. I will add, however, that the three collaborations Creationism, Batman/Bruce Wayne and Discordianism were all completed in less than a month (pre-Pee Review) and were completed on schedule. Also while I would certainly love to see Discordianism and Science fiction featured, a small reminder that writing feature articles is not the stated goal of IC. The goal is to take less-than-adequate articles that many readers are likely to see and make them more than adequate. Being featured is a nice bonus, but strictly extra. An article that's rewritten well but not featured is an IC success. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 13:31, May 30, 2010 (UTC)
And by that token, Science fiction has been completed in a timely manner as well. I'm a perfectionist though, and would prefer to see both Discordianism and this featured. And, more to the point, I headed up IC for a period of a month. The floor is now open for anyone to take it on. Without a head of IC, I can't conceive of a project for June. (But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.)                              Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Sunday, 21:52, May 30 2010 UTC

edit Second PEE review

I've just read through. Both of these raise good points - Why?s is from a more sci-fi fan perspective, and HELPME's from a non-fan. Some areas need expansion to aid with explanation, but it appears that all areas need some work. We have a good base point to work from. Anyone want to throw forward any ideas on what to do from here?                               Puppy's talk page00:40, June 5, 2009 Saturday, 20:36, May 29 2010 UTC

I think both of the reviewers caught many mistakes and weak points, and they also missed many of the jokes and satire. Let's not throw the babe out with the bathwater, and lose so much or what is actually, imnho, very good. So I see a problem. If we go by the pee reviews, the entire page might be huffed and we keep one or two photos. So let's tread carefully in edits. I personally agree that the beginning needs to be cut way down, with just an intro leading into the stories. As for some obvious misses in the pees, Rastafari is correct, not Rastafarian; the robot in the last pic is a robot, that's Data, and that's what makes the gif funny--because it's Data who is supposedly emotionless at that stage of his life; Kilgore Trout isn't real, but is loved as if he were real, that's the joke, and for him to organize major Sci-fi activities is the joke; Bradbury is shown as weak compared to Heinlein--Heinlein is a man's man macho writer while Bradbury loves ravines and emo twists, so the sticks and stone of the ravine do break his bones and that has great meaning to fans of Bradbury, and is funny; and on and on. So it seems that not everyone will find each section funny, and just as there are hundreds of kinds of SF fans there will be hundreds of takes on this page. Our job, as I see it, is to make the page flow well and let the reader discover their own particular gems among the parts they won't care about (not everyone likes Star Trek and Ringworld, not everyone likes on and on.. .) A long initial comment, so enough for now. Maybe a good start would be to just fix the tech. errors and misspellings that HELPME found. Al des chains 20:58 29 5 MMX
Al, I understand those jokes are hilarious to you- but you know about sci-fi. Casual readers might not. Also, I said not to get rid of the good parts at the end of the review.--Sir HELPME Talk (more? --> CUN ROTM NOTM Pleb USS Pees SK ) On Sunday, 12:10, May 30 2010 UTC
Al, I understand those jokes are hilarious to you and you know about sci-fi. But I also know SF, and my opinion stands. But because you brought them up, I'm going to touch on points mentioned above.
  1. According to both Webster's Third International Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, the word is "Rastafarian"--neither one has the word "Rastafari."
  2. In the Star Trek universe, Data is called an android with a positronic brain (the brain concept is from Asimov), and is not called a robot. That point, however, I must admit is minor.
  3. I've know for many years that Kilgore Trout is fictional but didn't find that part funny (although as I admitted I haven't read Venus on the Half-Shell. But I don't think it's wise for the humour in a whole section to depend upon the reader having read a specific book that's not all that terribly well known).
  4. I know a fair amount about the late Heinlein and I know Bradbury very well. I don't find the idea of them fighting funny no matter how macho someone imagines the often ill Heinlein was. Also I've read a great deal of Bradbury's books and stories but "the sticks and stone of the ravine do break his bones and that has great meaning to fans of Bradbury" does not have great meaning to me--I'm not even sure what it's talking about.
  5. And so on. Thanks to the members of IC for considering HELPME and my reviews. You have two detailed reviews to go by, one by a fan and one of a non-fan, which I think is very fortunate. I'm very glad HELPME did a review in addition to my drivel. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 05:21, May 30, 2010 (UTC)
I wish you had joined in the writing of the page. As for some of your points, in this fun debating society, Rastafari is the correct term among the Rastafari themselves, and forgive the good people at Webster's Third and Oxford for their ignorance. Yes, Data is an android, but still a robot too, as are we all--which was much of the point of Data's character in the series. The Trout book was just thrown in, not really important to the joke of adding Trout's name to the greats of science fiction, as he was so added in the Vonnegut universe (in Vonnegut's universe Trout was the greatest of the greats, but not famous because he sold his wares to minor pulp publishers who used them to augment illustrations of naked women, rapes, and heady romance stories, so real sf fans never read him). The fighting of Heinlein, even though he is late and was often ill, relates to their writing styles, and Heinlein at 70, after his stroke, probably could have still punched Bradbury's lights out physically. Even now, being late, he could still put up a good fight. Bradbury's ravine is his great symbol for all things childhood. The detailed reviews should help, and they provide some good tweeks, but their presence doesn't have to reshape the page although they do guide and give us a promise of a better page to come. Al des chains 12:58 30 5 MMX
Thank you. I would like to have worked on this page too--I did at least give suggestions and make a gallery. SF is one of my favorite topics, but real life intruded--and I wanted to back away because I had just been head of IC. Also I stand by my statements. WHY???PuppyOnTheRadio 13:36, May 30, 2010 (UTC)

edit So I noticed, (Dear HELPME... sigh,)

that people were defending the work (as opposed to actually working) so I thought I would too. HELPME said (about Cyberpunk) "The second paragraph has no jokes, sigh." but he was wrong, there were actually five jokes in there (granted some (possibly) not very good jokes (to you) mind you...)

Cquote1 Although noted for its focus on "high-tech and low-life" themes, Cyberpunkology is best experienced in a low-tech, high-life comic-book form. Primarily known through radio and film, CSF is easily accessible to its fanbase courtesy of Megacorporations. Cquote2
  1. The "high-tech and low-life" parody-line comes straight from the opening sentence over at Wikipedia, (Which is also why I added "portmanteau" to the definition in the first paragraph.) and also gave me an excuse to spork low-life as well (Which does have a link to Wikia.).
  2. The word play of juxtapositioning the best way to experience "high-tech" Cyberpunkology is with low tech comic books.
  3. A link joke juxtapositioning high-life & stoned.
  4. The concept of of juxtapositioning the best way to experience "high-tech" Cyberpunk is with low tech radio (which to my knowledge has never had cyberpunk done on the radio).
  5. The "hilarious" joke combining courtesy & Megacorporations (in relation to the cyberpunk-style megacorps who are NEVER courteous (see Robocop, etc.)).

Granted I expanded & re-wrote the entire section (minus the quote) after Pee review because it was lacking (adding AOL-Time Warner & Disney definitions to the megacorp line for example.) So I don't disagree with Why? & HELPME for the most part, I just think that people aren't going to get all the jokes in this article UNLESS they have a specific base level of information. (From the conversation here it looks as if the primary focus should be the voice of the article.)  Avast Matey!!!
