## Calvin and Hobbes

Score:+10
Featured picture candidate

Calvin and Hobbes was a popular comic strip during the 80s and 90s which discussed various religous ideas. Though he would later become known for his theory of predestination, John Calvin, shown here, was plagued by recurring religious doubt throughout his early career.

• Comment All featured images (except ones that get dropped via PFP) get a permanent spot in the image rotation, so even after they've actually been "featured" they'll appear on the front page every now and then. So yeah, there is a point, though the concern that the image might be featured a bit too soon after the article is valid. —rc (t) 20:55, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
• Comment Possibly not original. This is what §ǚρωξλ£μĦΦφ≈€ƏξßÐÆØΞ had to say about it when he uploaded it. "Thanks! I had originally scanned it for my myspace a long time ago (because calvin and hobbes is one of my favorite comics and I'm an atheist) and thought it would be funny here." Not sure how much of it was scanned and edited since then and whatnot (Like, if the head just got stuck on now, it's probably original enough). I believe all the other images in the article are original though. --monika 21:03, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Thermopylae was the top selling board game of the 5th Century BCE. ## Africamapclear

Featured picture candidate

Africa is widely agreed to be Earth's shittiest continent. For one thing, the land is wracked with hunger, poverty, disease, and genocide. It is also caked in shit. Not a pleasant place, all things considered. It is perhaps an omen that humans migrated out of Africa as soon as they could. As these migrants formed powerful civilizations in Europe, Asia, and (somehow) the Americas, the people of Africa remained primitive. Maybe it was the heat. Heat does make you lethargic, after all. The African people paid for their technological tardiness when the White Man (boo!) arrived. European slave drivers invaded Africa's shores, uprooting villages, destroying ecosystems, and throwing an entire race of people into centuries of bondage. Just think of it as the moment Africa "jumped the shark", so to speak. The continent still struggles today to overcome the repurcussions of European colonialism. Even after decades of progress, there is still widespread famine, disease, and strife. But hey, you can't blame their corrupt leaders for not trying, right? Right? Well, maybe you can.

In fact, I got the idea for the article whilst at a Good Friday service. Not even kdding. -- 20:13, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
• Fro MORE WITH THE JESUS JOKES! I think the thing that should be added is from the article: "Thankfully for its users, the file would miraculously reappear three days later, after descending to the Recycle Bin." Also to explain the joke, the file is named Jesus.chr (Jesus Christ) and the user of the Pontius Pilot (the man who sent Jesus to his death) is deleting the file and leaving the Barabbus file (just as Pilate did)... IMO, it is great, and if you are truly satirists and this is a satire website then ALL subjects should be fine to parody, not just SOME. If someone here was a Scientologist and saw my last featured image, they would no doubt say it was offensive and that it made fun of their beliefs and although I am Christian and find this image making light of my religion's savior, the overall irony and topicality of the image wins my vote over offensiveness because EVERYONE IS GOING TO BE OFFENDED BY SOMETHING HERE, WHY SHOULD WE PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT WILL BE OFFENSIVE? Not to mention that it's funny naming it the "Pontius Pilot" -- 19:51, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Comment: For all of you voting against because there are too many iPod images, you should all be ashamed. FINALLY, a GOOD iPod pic comes up, front page material, dare I say, and you all just vote against. The image IS FUNNY! It looks like the iPod Nano on a floppy for all of you who didn't get it, and that's funny! Darth Vader is reaching for the Apple, for crying out lod! Hell, even I voted for it. I hope you all reconsider, because voting against an image just because there are many similar is stupidity. --Boy Toy bitch at me 16:23, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Rebuttal: First of all, let's tone down the vitriol here. I apologize for mine, as well. Yes, Uncyclopedia is flooded with iPod images. But that's not the issue here. The issue is whether or not this image deserves to be featured based on its intrinsic comedic value (or so I have always thought.) Personally, I voted against this image because it, like all other iPod derivatives, is in no way humorous to me. No matter how well-done the pic has been, the "funny" has never been there for me. So yes, it is a great pic, but I didn't laugh. I groaned, not only because it's not funny to me, but also because I've already seen it. Many, many times. There's few things as irritating as hearing the same unfunny joke told over and over (i.e. "Git-R-Done!" *ZAP!*) It's turning into an extrapolation exercise that, for my money, is vastly inferior to the likes of MST3K's "Wiffle obsession" bumper ("Wiffle underpants, Wiffle roach motel, Wiffle Claude Aiken!" What, no iWiffle???) Then again, that's just me, and I don't presume to speak for anyone else. --The King In Yellow (Talk to the Dalek.) 17:54, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
• Weak for. The only reason I hadn't voted for it earlier is because (the even-more-overused) Darth Vader is on it. IMHO it would be much funnier if it were Steve Jobs picking his nose... (Putting Robert Schneider on it would be even better, but only for people capable of getting impossibly obscure pop-culture references.)  c • > •  18:00, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

• Against. You're a n00b, so you'll be forgiven for not knowing the original source image of Booth shooting Lincoln has been done to death on this page (none of them passed).-- 16:22, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Weak for. A wordplay, eh? I was not aware of the Booth quote, I thought he said, "The South will rise again" or some other such nonsense. It had to be explained to me, so it doesn't get a full for, but I'll give it a half-vote.-- 18:10, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

• Comment why is everyone against this, other than that other pictures using the image weren't funny - I think it works well, especially coupled with the caption --LinkTGF
• I can tell you why I voted against. I'm sick of presidential images. They don't give me the chuckles. --Boy Toy bitch at me 22:04, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
• FOR and I'll tell you why. Its funny, it isn't like anything else thats been on this page in a while, and it attempts to use Latin. Ab imo pectore, I love this image! Dame  22:34, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
• For. As Brad said, "None of them passed." Well then, it's about time isn't it? 22:41, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

• Contra (or possibly anti not sure which is Greek and which is Latin). Also, if winning awards means that much to you. All you have to do is point out the fact that my first contribution was 18:33, 9 December 2005.  ;) -- – Mahroww a.k.a.  04:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
• For: Are you people nuts, this is one of the best images to come through VFP in ages. Let's do a quick analysis, shall we: That's obviously John Wilkes Booth in the Ford Theater, he's shooting a dinosaur, a freakin' dinosaur, and the edit is of high enough quality that the dinosaur doesn't look out of place. Oh, I almost forgot, when John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln, he shouted "Sic semper tyrannis!", COULD YOU POSSIBLY GET A BETTER PLAY ON WORDS THAN THAT?! COME ON PEOPLE! --Sir gwax (talk) 05:59, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

• Weak against. The "censoring" effect is worth a smirk, but not much else. Plus, the blood's just too obvious to make the raspberries work -- my initial thought was "bloody snowballs?" when I saw it. --The King In Yellow (Talk to the Dalek.) 19:19, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
