edit UnSignpost articles needed

As always, UnSignpost articles are very much needed. The new UnSignpost will be created this Friday (Friday the 5th) and if nobody puts anything, I will be the only person to write the whole newspaper. I am physically able to do it but think that it might be boring for a reader to see only my signature in the whole issue. Thanks! Anton (talk) 17:01, July 3, 2013 (UTC)

edit Advice for Scott

As you are going to do this and later UnSignposts, here is some information you may need.

  • There is only one biopic contribution which has not been used yet: Spike's. We really need more. Tomorrow I can ask several users to do this (I think Zim ulator and Denza can do it).
  • As Romartus said, he will publish the PLS results today so we might include it as well.
  • And, please, if you are going to write something yourself, inform me, so I won't do it tomorrow. Anton (talk) 20:46, July 12, 2013 (UTC)
I have published the results on the PLS voting page for now. Best Noob article will be finished on the voting later. --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 21:55, July 12, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Romartus. I think Spike's has been used, I will check. I am going to include PLS and hopefully an interview with Romartus. I am writing the PLS bit but would be good to have another article on something. Thanks. Ok. I will write about something. I don't think Spike's was used as I checked all the UnSignposts Scott did amd there was no his comtribution. Anton (talk) 07:42, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

Mine was not used, though I don't need the publicity and it is distasteful for a website to write about its own administrators. You asked me once about this feature: I don't mind it at all, and indeed a biopic used to be a staple of the main page. Mine was done on the main page long ago by someone (perhaps MrN9000 or the Chief) who based it on a quick reading of my user page. I know all I ever wanted to know about both Zim and Denza, though none of it explains why I can't get an invite to a cook-out an hour south of here. The real utility of this feature is not putting a human face on Admins (which no one buys anyway) but stroking newbie egos (preferably with their consent and involvement). If there is no benefit, the feature need not run merely because "we need something to put there." The PLS results are indeed the big news on the website. Spıke Ѧ 14:18 13-Jul-13

I always thought that the biopic contribution was a way to get users to know about each other, to get introduced to others, admins as well. Anton (talk) 15:19, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

A small comment: can I, please, be Anton simply, even though I have the Lt. part in my signature? And also I do not mention the VFP in my article. Anton (talk) 16:38, July 13, 2013 (UTC)

edit VFH entries

The PLS is done and our Votes For Highlight page has already three more entries in one day with 22 entries and 9 different nominators all in all. The topics of articles vary and the person who will go there in order to vote, will certainly find a theme that he is interested in. There are, for instance three HowTos, two UnScripts, two UnNews and one UnBook. Three other articles talk about something beginning with the letter "A" (and one even has three capital As at the same time) and knowing that one of the best-known Uncyclopedia articles is "AAAAAAAA", these ones will certainly be featured...one day. With the rich choice of themes, such as military (Italian Tanks), military history (Uncyclopedian), famous military leaders (The Last King of Scotland) and military countries (Ukraine), there is even one essay about the qualities and defects of a 20th century vacuum-cleaner (Henry).

The situation is still not very stable and, although Cap'n Crunch is currently more popular than the Atheist Alliance of America, everything can change in a minute if there are enough voters. And looking only at the VFH scores, it becomes obvious that there are more people who want to know about the best way of taming six-legged lame men, than there are those, who are willing to walk on Saturn and (even less) wanting to acquire a a car insurance). Does this mean that the emigration of Earthlings to Saturn is not very significant and the amount of car crushes is being reduced? It is up to you whether to go to the VFH page and figure it out or to keep on reading this issue of UnSignpost which might not be as informative.

edit Again

I think that Scott is gone, so I am going to issue all the UnSignposts till the middle of August (if nobody objects). I am sure I will manage but any help is welcome. Anton (talk) 14:48, July 29, 2013 (UTC)

I'll provide any needed help, though I am unaware of anything newsworthy having happened. Spıke Ѧ 14:59 29-Jul-13
There is always something and I am sure it will be enough. I am not going to work on the newspaper until the end of the week, though (not going to break a tradition). Anton (talk) 09:30, July 30, 2013 (UTC)

edit HowTo:Be A Reviewer Of The Month

For those who want to be Reviewers of the Month (as the question of resurrecting the contest has arisen recently) but have no idea about how to do the in-depth reviews or simply do not have any suggestions of improvements for the writer, the UnSignpost editors have worked an ideal Pee Review that will work in almost every case. Comments that you should not insert in review (delete them before copying and pasting the table) are in square brackets and you only have to insert your signature at the end and the name of the article you are reviewing (well, it is actually me who has done the review) several times.

edit A new format?

At the fork, the format of UnSignpost has changed. Here is the newspaper that is going to be published soon. I think that it is a better format than the one we have right now, so maybe we should borrow this idea? Anton (talk) 13:49, August 1, 2013 (UTC)

As you are the only person stepping up to do this work right now, it is totally your call. I predict that there will be grumbling about theft, that there would be grumbling even if you didn't do it, and that there has probably been ample theft in the other direction; in other words, the reaction of pundits doesn't matter. Copying the format does not mean copying the content; if they still exult in pranks and joke bans, such departments should be replaced with other stuff for this website. Spıke Ѧ 16:04 1-Aug-13
Theft!!!! Then again, copying directly is the sincerest form of flattery. I've stolen 98% of my features from old issues of 'Finland Satire' published in the 18th Century, in Denmark. Aleister 16:11 1-8-'13
Al, I will never vote for you again! Just kidding, did you like my ideal review? Anton (talk) 17:41, August 1, 2013 (UTC)

The new UnSignpost is at UnSignpost/20130803. Spike, if you are going to write an article (as you said), please, put it at the beginning. Anton (talk) 20:55, August 2, 2013 (UTC)

I promised to help you and I will. But I probably also said there doesn't seem to be any news "fit to print," and I am unable to create it out of a sow's ear. Thank you for being willing to be upstaged if a veritable "scoop" should occur. Spıke Ѧ 03:59 3-Aug-13
I think that the two forums about old users coming back is good enough. If I find anything else, I will tell you. Anton (talk) 07:28, August 3, 2013 (UTC)
Users come and go all the time. As this is not news, I think the dominant criterion is: Can you make it funny? Spıke Ѧ 15:08 4-Aug-13

edit A problem

I noticed several days ago that there was a problem with the new format: the content would not go into two columns. I tried to fix this, failed and made an experiment: copied the fork USP completely and pasted it here. And guess what? The same format does not work here. So I bet there is a difference between what works here and there and, as I don't have much technical skills, I won't be able to issue the USP until I somehow find a way to solve the problem. What I plan to do is to go Wikipedia, copy the Signpost there and see if it works here. If this does not work, I will try to fix the format manually. And if everything fails, then the readers will have to read something else this weekend. Anton (talk) 13:37, August 4, 2013 (UTC)

It's possible that the population of templates at the two sites has diverged. If you cannot make the technical things work, then this experiment might be a waste of time, unless you are learning stuff about wikitables and writing in HTML. As above, I don't see much news here this fortnight, and would not be disturbed if the UnSignpost were late--but it would be a shame if it were late due solely to self-induced mechanical problems! Spıke Ѧ 15:08 4-Aug-13
Yes. And I am trying to fix everything now. I copied a wikipedia template for the signpost articles, edited it and even used it (see below). Now I want to create the newspaper itself using the wikipedia format. Anton (talk) 15:21, August 4, 2013 (UTC)

edit Conclusion

The template that I copied from the Wikipedia Signpost works. The question is how. I should edit it in a way that will allow us not to have red links inside. After I work it out completely, I will check if it will work inside the USP. Anton (talk) 14:33, August 4, 2013 (UTC)

Red lik fixed. Next step. Anton (talk) 15:05, August 4, 2013 (UTC)
It seems a perfectly fine format, but at the moment I prefer the old one as I could minimise it. Is there any way you could make it possible to do so on the new format? Sir Reverend P. Pennyfeather (fancy a chat?) CUN VFH PLS 17:59, August 12, 2013 (UTC)

I was struggling to find an answer to that question for a week. It seems that if I use the template I created (Uncyclopedia:UnSignpost Template) to place articles, the minimizing becomes impossible. If you want that option, I will have to change the format again. Anton (talk) 10:29, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

edit Valley Girl Week

Now comes Shabidoo with the VFH nomination of UnBooks:My Summer Vacation in Saudi Arabia‎ (one of two nominations I damned with faint praise, to-wit: "Fine writing, but hardly encyclopedic (Is this "namespace bias," which is prohibited in VFH? Should something be done about it?)). Then Darth Generic with the on-line role-playing game Barbie Doll Fortress 2‎‎. (Perhaps honorable mention to Aaronaraujo2013 for NASCAR, mostly because he is broadcasting for American redneck racing fans to help him enhance this article.) There is only one conclusion to be drawn: This is the week of the Valley Girl on Uncyclopedia. (This is not "an UnSignpost article." It is a "lead" that an enterprising reporter could follow up.) You can ask him, if you want, as it is your idea. Anton (talk) 18:23, August 30, 2013 (UTC)

New user Tamerial horror has bounced back from a one-week ban (for including a feud with an unnamed Admin as a section of a now-deleted article about something else) with magnanimity, editing out references to the deleted article and showing signs of moving forward. In an era in which an old Uncyclopedian every few days loudly clears out his locker and tries to expunge all evidence of himself on pages that are not his, it is noteworthy, and perhaps newsworthy, that someone seems to actually want to be an Uncyclopedian. But...can he write??? Spıke Ѧ 16:16 3-Sep-13

Now I'm confused; a Change Summary by Tamerial suggests that Chaoarren is the banned user I meant. But separately, Mrpastry909 is another new user and he does know how to write, whereas Tamerial has just assembled a really long, ugly list, at Chao, about which I complained on his talk page. edit UnSignpost/News

How about making such a page? First, UnSignpost can't cover all the issues (as well as minor ones) in one issue and so having a page that will briefly tell all the readers about what is happening and providing a link to the UnSignpost article about this will be cool. Second, we need to have some permanent announcements (such as the Proofreading Service now counts two members, if you need a proofreading, just ask!), so nobody forgets about something important after they finish reading the USP. Finally, we need to have all the principal information about the amount of opened forums, VFH, VFD, etc.

Do you think this idea should survive? Anton (talk) 17:58, August 30, 2013 (UTC)

Yes please. Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 19:21, August 30, 2013 (UTC)
Then I will start the page. Anton (talk) 12:23, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Goody, goody. Make it look good. Puppy may be required to make it look like a newspage. It could be like the front page of UnNews however the news only contains stories about Uncyclopedia internal matters. Also I can see this page eventually replacing the newspaper as now we deliver some links to a page on news so in the future we deliver some headlines from our new news page that link to the page but the page is regularly updated so no need to bother with a new page (newspaper) every week. Anton this is the sort of genius that ought to have you promoted way above my position!! Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 15:03, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the praise! I think Puppy ought not to be disturbed from his work and I like facing challenges. I don't think this would replace the UnSignpost, UnSignpost is irreplaceable! Anton (talk) 18:25, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
No I think it will as a good thing. Instead of creating many Unsignpost issues we will just have a constant running one with updates. Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 18:35, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Maybe, if the editors stop being active enough to produce the UnSignposts. But it is a good idea to have both. And do you think we need Uncyclopedia:UnSignpost/menu that I have just created? Anton (talk) 20:22, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Yep. Nice. No need fo the editors bit though. People contact us through press room. Sir ScottPat (talk) White Ensign Scotland Flag 1 Compassrose VFH UnS NotM WotM WotY 20:26, August 31, 2013 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Anton (talk) 20:29, August 31, 2013 (UTC)

It is finished! Look! Do you have any suggestions? Anton (talk) 13:32, September 2, 2013 (UTC)

It looks promising. Just as a thought though, I noticed that the naming convention we had for previous USP (Uncyclopedia:Unsignpost/yyyymmdd) has changed slightly (Unsignpost/yyyymmdd), which has a slight problem. The use of the Uncyclopedia namespace means this does not get counted as an "article", and doesn't come up in random article searches and the like.
What I'm thinking is that Unsignpost has become the equivalent of a namespace in and of itself. Consider the number of UnSignpost pages we have compared to the number of pages in UnDebate, UnReview or Unquotable, for example.
This page you have created would make a good "main page" (like UnNews, for example) for the namespace. I think it's time UnSignpost graduated to being a namespace of it's own accord. (Which would require a forum to get community consent followed by asking Wikia to add it in.)                               Puppy's talk page11:53 03 Sep 2013
It is actually a cool idea! Should we start a forum right now then? Anton (talk) 12:06, September 3, 2013 (UTC)

edit The changing face of the news

The face of media is changing, which is inevitable, as the purpose of media is change.

Since Guttenburg decided to give up on his plans for the world's first automated juicer and used his press instead to create movable type, the printed word has been the apex of communication. This use of printed records has increased the levels of communication and understanding among mankind, bringing us to the highly enlightened state of being that we have now achieved.

And UnSignpost, as the second longest continuously running sometimes regular news broadcast that has appeared on the Internet being hosted by a comedic website that parodies the fifth most popular website on earth, is obviously at the forefront of modern communication.

Many years ago the first issue of the UnSignpost was produced, with the lofty prediction that it would last for another issue. Over the years it has been run into the ground by many fine editors, but one thing has remained constant - it has always looked sort of the same.

Finally we have embraced the changes that are sweeping through more mainstream media, and have changed our look, along with introducing our new “digital” edition. The digital edition is located at Uncyclopedia:UnSignpost/News, and the traditional edition has been shrunk. This fits in with the original stated message of UnSignpost:

“For too long, Uncyclopedia has been devoid of talk page spam, such as thank you templates and welcome messages. To rectify this, Dr. Skullthumper, a local doctor and zombie specialist, and Cajek, one of the last members of the light-blue-ish species of Cajeks, have created a newspaper in the latest exercise in futility to hit the site since Forum:Count to a million.”

Of course, there are some of those who will resist the changes being made in printed media and still wish to receive a printed copy of the news. As such, we will of course accommodate your needs, and you can request a printed copy simply by clicking Ctrl + P on your PC now.

edit Ban Virgin gets cherry popped

The nominal Editor-in-Chief of this publication (as your correspondent is confused as to which guy abdicated most recently) was chatting recently with an Admin and remarked about his desire to keep his sterling record of never-having-been-banned intact. This probably seemed like a safe remark, as the Admin in question has famously tried to guide Uncyclopedia away from its time-honored tradition of Joke Bans. It was not. We quickly set to reducing the ban from the 2-hour minimum shown on the pull-down menu — officially, the Uncyclopedian was banned for about 12 minutes — but he took the evening off, as our message to banned users has never been designed to be gentle.

The Uncyclopedian is back on-line, with compliments to the Admin and even a quick cleaning job to vacuum the transcript of the event into an archive with an utterly unguessable page name. The archive includes a tutorial from Shabidoo on the proud history of Joke Bans, which amuse all Uncyclopedians provided Admins only do it to each other.

The other Editor Guy, who is also a Ban Virgin, reacted with outrage. However, the moment had passed.

The Admin in question was speechless. "What can I say?" he told the UnSignpost. "I was getting ready for the Boston Red Sox to win the division, I was using the ban-stick as a baseball bat, just practicing my swing on that imaginary tricky curve ball, and it just slipped out of my hand!" It could happen again; after all, no one applies pine tar to a ban-stick. Spıke Ѧ 14:55 14-Sep-13

edit US government shuts down; Uncyclopedia doesn't

Uncyclopedians who neglect UnNews might not have noticed that the U.S. Government underwent a devastating partial shutdown, something reported by Djme13 with a follow-up story by yours truly. (The many Uncyclopedia users who hate to read can avail themselves of either story in Talking Book format.)

Meanwhile, ScottPat, who actually likes government, visited nasa.gov, only to be confronted with a terse shutdown notice in two of his favorite languages, though the Spanish-language message omitted directions to the day's amnesty protest in the federal district, a function of government that was curiously unaffected. He made the helpful suggestion that Uncyclopedia adopt a similar message, as our funding situation is, if anything, in worse shape than government's. (We have tried to print our own currency, and it didn't work.)

So we sporked the NASA message, as we feel we have already paid for it, for use on Uncyclopedia. The best way to make it assault users was to employ our tried-and-true method of assaulting users: the recently retired Content Warning. Wikia eagerly switched the Content Warning back on but — demonstrating again the clear communication that is always present between Admins and webhost — no one saw fit to put the right text on the page. This meant that for most of Monday the 7th, users saw the hated and hotly debated old Content Warning again. ScottPat noticed the bug, though he claims to be unable to see the correction, and you might not either, as the device is designed to deliver a single assault, and not battery.

A remarkable side-effect was a decline in overnight anonymous traffic, as our Third Shift evidently took at face value the claim that Uncyclopedia was shut for lack of funding. We have always known that they have no sense of humor and half of them think that we are Wikipedia.

Editors: Also please note that our webhost landlady Sannse has contributed to Forum:Wikia visit. I would like the UnSignpost to tout the fact that we are not the "seemingly abandoned" site that someone once saw fit to call us at Wikipedia, such as by calling attention to the fact that Sannse contributed actual statistics. Also, the abdication of the Chief Justice, our highest-ranking Admin, is the Chief news of the fortnight. You would be blameless if you gave either bombshell a tongue-in-cheek treatment, but do it with kindness, as we are all on the same team, most of the time. Spıke Ѧ 00:29 11-Oct-13

Spike said that he cannot make his rewrite of UN:SIG funny, so here it is: (Anton (talk) 17:28, October 11, 2013 (UTC))

edit Some srs bsns (series of busyness?) - diary of a disillusioned editor

edit September 30

"If rules are meant to be broken, they should at least be funny," - thought the Uncyclopedia admins years ago and replaced any possible policies of the site with in-jokes, numerous allusions to their moms, self-reference and in-jokes.

"If rules are broken, it is because they are funny," - thought the Uncyclopedia admins in October 2013 and made rules.

Dear diary,

What was designed as an ambiguous source for drama, suddenly became a respectable policy (Forum:A new VFS is in order), and a page with the primary aim to confuse new users, was rewritten, not featured (which lead to its loss of honour) and laughed at (Forum:Rewrite of UN:SIG).

edit October 9

Dear diary,

I should have taken another pill.

ChiefjusticeDS could not endure our situation and began stripping paint. Apparently, this lead to hallucinations, as well as the shorter list of active administrators and a Roman Imperator becoming a Bureaucrat.

After Chief's last forum has received as many posts as P.Sulivan's one, Romartus took over the bright initiative and stripped the list down to three members.

edit October 10

Dear diary,

I should have taken money instead of a free Uncyclopedia account.

There are plenty of news but we still cannot make an UnSignpost. Probably because we spend so much time asking people to do something, making conflicts and then trying to resolve them. What did I want to say?

ScottPat began asking for his own article to be deleted. Sannse admitted that Wikia hides information from its own employees.

The UnSignpost stopped being talkpage spam and is now a reliable news provider, with - maybe - its own namespace in nearby future.

It is not the middle of autumn yet and nobody knows what will follow.

edit October 11 and some time after

I don't want to start the new entry with "Dear diary". I mean it is not even dear to me. So what happened?

The situation is now different: there are less vandals. Have they just understood what a sick place it is?

Shabidoo had a bright idea about changing Pee Review. Another potentially good idea that has not gone anywhere.

edit October 20

I think we should make an UnSignpost for a change. Tons of new forums and each of them saying what everyone should have come up with ages ago. And they are still wrong! Admins say: "Stop arguing! We are a good community!" Users say: "Let's argue over the goodness of our community!"

Then they try to paraphrase and rephrase each other. Then the disagreements begin. Then they begin voting. Then the voting is interrupted as someone forgot to record the score or because someone's vote is irrelevant. After that, they open a new forum and do the same thing but in different order. Well, we should really write an UnSignpost for a change. At least, it is more serious than our forums. Anton (talk) 17:28, October 11, 2013 (UTC)
