The new RiteAid store in Tempe is already putting its former soda cooler to good use.

PHOENIX, Arizona -- A ballot measure to legalize medical marijuana is building up a head of steam as absentee votes are counted.

"Proposition 420" was trailing on Election Day by 7,200 votes. It was losing last Friday by 1,500 votes as more absentee votes were counted. County Recorder Helen Purcell told UnNews, "Man, this is some heavy shit."

By the end of the day, the referendum question was leading by 4,421 votes out of 1.63 million votes counted.

The remaining uncounted votes come from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the notorious home of signs advising hikers that the National Park Service cannot guarantee their safety against smugglers from Mexico. Absentee ballots are streaming in faster than illegal Mexicans. Actually, equally fast.
