Turks and Caicos Islands

After decades of petitioning by British colony Turks and Caicos Islands in the sunny Caribbean to join Canada, both Canada and Queen Liz Windsor agreed that the colony would become part of Canada, effective July 1st, 2004.
Various provinces and territories of Canada wanted the Turks and Caicos Islands to become part of their province or territory. Prince Edward Island wanted the colony as an assembly plant for Anne of Green Gables souvenir dolls. Alberta wanted the colony's emu as breeding stock to make a premium cattle/emu cross. British Columbia wanted something British. Ontario wanted to be a colonial power.
However, in the end, Liz Windsor, in her dual role as absolute monarch of both Great Britain and Canada, decided that the colony would join as part of Canada's Nunavut Territory. This was so that the mean average annual temperature of Nunavut would be the same as that of Ottawa, without the need for global warming. In this way, Canada could fulfill its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.
The Canadian acquisition of the colony has devastated the economy of Florida as thousands of Canadian snowbirds (sometimes called retirees) have fled Floridian trailer-parks to set up hurricane-proof shelters in Turks and Caicos Islands. The shelters were promptly washed over by waves from the 2005 hurricane season's numerous storms, however, and quite a few of the snowbirds retreated to No Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina hit.
