"I recently purchased an expensive network router for the small business firm where I am the head of the IT department. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to set it up, much less a basic understanding of networking principles. First of all, could someone explain to me what exactly a socket is and second, where can I find this alleged "ether"-net I hear so much about? Will that solve my problems?"

The LA Times reports that 'Independent software authors have attacked Microsoft's decision to keep the Windows source code closed and proprietary, raising concerns about the ethics of this practice. However, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer claimed that releasing the code would be be "financially ruinous" for the company.'
You might remember a completely different recent story about Windows, or this same story from earlier today.
"If you liked the first Guitar Hero game, then you'll love Guitar Hero 7. In this sequel, your character is equipped with a turbo thrasher metal guitar that totally can rip power chords like a rock icon given the hair of +2 rockerness. YEAH! You'll be able to impress your friends by playing along to rock hits such as Rock N Roll All Nite by Kiss and Go Tell Aunt Rhody (public domain folk song). But that's not all! Guitar Hero 7 will allow you to actually scan a picture of your face into your game system and superimpose it on the body of the character you choose! ROCKIN'!"

First, we would like to apologize for linking directly to the Firefox 2.0 download and stealing their bandwidth; we understand how that is a problem now. We also would like to apologize for an article posted that claimed to link to an interview with John Carmack about the Doom 3 expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil. Not only did the interview turn out to be completely falsified, but Doom 3:RoE turned out to already have been released over two years ago. Oops :)

Recently it came to my attention that there was a fan fiction involving a data packet which had a very pro-open source stance. After a few weeks of tireless searching, I finally tracked down this work of literary genius, to share with you fellow Slashdotters.
I am your average 36 year old male, and as such I enjoy reading /., living in mommies basement , writing for /., masterbaiting , modding /., and installing linux to microwaves and remote controls. But recently, my parents have been urging me to get a job, move out, and never call agian. They refused to recognize that my unique body size will not allow me to leave my bed, but more recently they have been far to pushy. They have started to bring me my food, and have cancelled my credit card. I have exausted all means other that don't require moving, please help me /..
"This is the year of the linux desktop, unlike the other years we have made this claim (when M$ used their monopoly status to control users mind and force them to use Windows), this year its is certian, vomit says so. The kernel is, like, totally better,(has been re-written in c-flat) and that is what the users really care about. This year the stupid fucked-up hick bitching lazyassed cunt users will finally begin to appreciate the virtues of the .conf files, tux racer, and not having your system slowed down with things like 3d accl. HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAY!"
The Washington Post notes, 'Microsoft persists in keeping Windows closed and proprietary, defending the expensive research of its departments with a portfolio of patents. Its stance has drawn staunch critics from independent software authors about the ethics of this practice. CEO Steve Ballmer insisted two weeks ago it would be "financially ruinous" to release the Windows source code.'
Does anything more need to be said? It's only a matter of time before Microsoft succumbs to the mighty banner of FOSS. The idiots.
