One of Disney's most beloved movies is Schwastica. Disney says he got inspiration from seeing Employee of the Month (and possibly the alcohol afterwards). The film was released on January 3, 1962 and grossed $ 2 million dollars. For the film, Disney picked Hitler to be played by David Tomlinson after seeing the British film, Dude, Where's my Car?, and was later picked to play the father in Mary Poppins. Faye Dunnaway was picked to play Eva Braun.
[edit] Summary
- Warning: Contains spoilers! I think............*
The film takes place in WWII when Hitler is conquering countries. Soon, Hitler meets Eva Braun and they fall in love. He quickly becomes an alcoholic and drug addict. Before his attempted suicide, he passes out from losing air and too much alcohol. He enters an animated world will with happy animals that sing and dance. They show Hitler why it's good to stay alive. He quickly gains conciousness, and throws a party for the Nazis, the Jews (saying how sorry he was), and Eva. Hitler and Eva are both blown up by bombs dropped by the Americans. Everyone else is alive and continue partying.
[edit] The Original Cut
The finished film was 168 minutes long. Disney and many others thought it was too long for family audiences. The film was cut down to 116 minutes. Nowadays, the original uncut, 168 minute version,is the only version availible. Also, when the movie was cut, the ending where Hitler and Eva die was thought to be too sad for family audiences to watch. So they were just left partying at the end.

[edit] Release and Reaction
It quickly became a hit! It was rated G because there was nothing objectional in it. It was nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture. It won 3 (and an honorary oscar). It was re-released in 1972,1979,1985,1989,1990, and 1909. It is now available on DVD. A broadway production, starring Matthew Broderick as Hitler, is still playing across the country. In 2008, Disney plans to release a direct to video sequel, Schwastica II: German Pride. People still love this fine film to this day.
