Primacy of Sunnydale

The hierarchy of the Church of Buffy is theoretically led by the Matriarch of Sunnydale, a dogma which has caused many problems due to the fictional nature of that town. The current Matriarch (or "Mope") in absentia is Amanda Tapping, who rules the church from her palatial home in Vancouver.

[edit] History

[edit] Mists of Time

Back in the mists of time, the Church of Buffy was led by a succession of fictional Mopes; a fact which some say robs the Church of all credibility, although believers of course deny this. In recent years, a more concrete succession has been traced. Below are the most recent undisputed Mopes.

[edit] Mope Mary Shelley IV

As her mother invented feminism and she invented science fiction, the Church felt it only right to appoint Mary Shelley as Mope in 1998. She was swiftly deposed, however, after a brief dispute about the validity of a Mope who was already dead. Her reign lasted six months and is remembered for a number of important reforms, such as the abolition of fasting on weekends to obtain a figure similar to that of their saviour, Buffy. As with all Mopes, the number after her name was purely for appearances' sake.

[edit] Mope Sophie Aldred VII

British "actress" Sophie Aldred was elected after the deposition of Mope Mary Shelly IV. Unlike her predecessor, Aldred was alive, which gave her a significant advantage over several of her rivals. Aldred had proven her commitment to the Church's cause with her work in Doctor Who, and was a popular choice among the faithful. She became known for her colourful hats, and hoped to implement the construction of Sunnydale so that she might finally occupy the Mapal see she ruled from. Sadly, this project failed due to lack of funds.

Aldred abdicated in 2002, citing personal reasons. Most believe that she was emotionally destroyed by her failure to establish the town of Sunnydale.

[edit] Mope Amanda Tapping III

Amanda Tapping is the current Mope, elected in January 2003 after a bitter struggle. Tapping has proven to be even more popular than her predecessor, and is dedicated to the eradication of poverty, unhappiness, and people who don't accept Buffy as their saviour.

A small but active sect believes that the canon of Star Gate should now be considered to be Mapal Doctrine, but Tapping herself has never made any comment on the issue.

[edit] Theological Significance

The Primacy of Sunnydale is significant in that it establishes a strict and simple hierarchy for the Church of Buffy, and also for being based in a fictional location. As such, Mopes have tended to rule from their homes, communication with the faithful via email, television and telepathy.

[edit] Mapal Bulls

The Mapal Bulls are a herd of strong oxen gifted to the Holy See by William Shatner in 1997. When a Mapal declaration is made, it is nailed to one of the bulls and to symbolise its realise into the wider world. As one might imagine, this has led to many accusations of animal cruelty, especially in recent times with the declarations of Amanda Tapping III appearing on a seemingly weekly basis.
