Persistent Vegetative

Joining the United States of America as its 84th member state in 2045, Persistent Vegetative was previously an independent kingdom ruled over by a race of exceptionally tall hamsters. It has the postal abbreviation VEGGIE (to differentiate from Florida). Twinned with the nation state of Euthanasia since 1984, it has become a favourite destination for the elderly, and the ill.
The name derives from the hamster words for "nice land with lots of munchies, hamsters will prevail, you'll see, you'll see".

The State Capital and main seat of legislature is Potato. The state loosely follows the model of government in Washington - known as Scissors, Paper, Rock. The current State Governor is this guy, who is currently entering his fourth term of office.

Surrounded on three sides by other states, the only way out is the sea. Boats leave daily for other places, except France. The state is proud to have its own running water.

Old people harvesting has been a part of life for the state's two thousand inhabitants since neolithic times, and whilst technological advances have improved the process many people prefer to continue traditional methods, making the main import into the state 2 by 2 beechwood "clobbering" sticks.
