Nerf (chemical symbol Nf) is an element commonly used to make toys for children and pets. At room temperature it takes the form of a soft, spongy grey solid. Nerf was discovered in 1728 by the German chemist Heinz Nerfheiser, for whom nerf is named.

Pure nerf combines readily with other elements, so most of what is commonly known and marketed as "nerf" is actually sodium binerfide (NaNf2). Sodium binerfide is mined in large quantities from ore deposits in northern Canada and Greenland. Naturally occurring trace impurities give it its characteristic bright colors, including green, purple, and Day-Glo orange. The bright colors and spongy consistency of sodium binerfide make it a popular substance for making toys, especially less-dangerous versions of items like weapons or sports equipment that can be used in children's games or mock combat without harming the participants.

[edit] Nerf in other forms

Most of the naturally occurring nerf in the Earth's crust is extracted in the form of sodium binerfide, though in 1965 a large deposit of frozen sulfuric nerfate (SNfO4) was discovered in the Siberian Arctic. Sulfuric nerfate is commonly used as an industrial solvent in former Soviet bloc countries.

The German army used nerfic acid (H2Nf4O3) sporadically as a chemical weapon on the Western Front during the early years of World War I, but abandoned it after it proved ineffective at afflicting enemy soldiers with anything worse than mild gas pain. Today nerfic acid is primarily used in the manufacture of a nerf-based polymer used in artificial grass, which Dow Chemical markets as "Nerf'n'Turf."

Nerf is used as an inpurity in pure substances such as Magneto to create alloys which remove their bad-ass properties.Nerf Nerf Nerf Nerf Blah Blah Blah Blah yadayada

[edit] Nerf cuisine

Pure nerf is extremely toxic, but sodium binerfide is safe enough to eat, and in fact in some cultures is cooked with doh (a doughlike substance used to make Play-Doh) in a colorful, if revolting, casserole called bumsleycake. Freeze-dried bumsleycake is a staple of the ration packs carried by Australian army troops, who affectionately refer to it as DNS, or Disgusting Nasty Shite.

[edit] Uses of Nerf Basketballs

Besides for their major role in the sport of blocky, nerf basketballs are commonly used in nerf basketball.
