Naha

'Naha' is the bustling cultural center of the Okinawan islands and, like Hell, is the place where all roads lead to. The country to which this city belongs has been the center of a complex and controversial debate for the last 1000 years. Many countries, most notably Japan, America, China, South Korea and Atlantis have laid a claim to this city over the years. The dispute remains unsolved, but one thing is for sure: Nahans feel they are not truly a part of Japan.

[edit] History

Naha was bombed by the Great Satan in the early 1940s, but this and all other history in Japan from 1933-the 2 massive nuclear bombs were stricken from the records by those pesky revisionists. However, Okinawans remember these things - and those cruelties inflicted upon them by the Japanese mainlanders.

The nearby military base was constructed after WW2 was declared a tie. Much of the culture found in Okinawa might be described as a mix of that provided by American Marines, and that provided by the natives

[edit] Sights

Anything you feel may be worth seeing usually takes the form of a war memorial or peace park or something. Don't bother - go to Kokusaidori (International Street) instead. As a proud International tourist, what better way to experience the cultural delights of Naha, than to go to "Paul and Mike's International Bar" or "The Smugglers Irish Pub?" Well, the Smugglers is a bit of a browner shade of green - music such as that concocted by Enya blasts mercilessly out of the loudspeakers there. Avoid. Eye candy watching is best practised sitting outside starbucks on Kokusaidori where you can enjoy a variety of horny looking females both local and holiday makers from the mainland.

[edit] People

[edit] Filipino Americans (mostly US Navy)

AKA The Mafia. Sometimes can be mistaken to be Okinawans, do with them or their women, or they will KILL you!

[edit] African American Marines

Flying in the face of common stereotypes, these guys are usually found at the local hip-hop club on Kokusaidori, picking up those Japanese mainland "ladies" that like foreign guys - especially those girls who want to shop on American base kudasai!!!

[edit] Hispanic American Marines

Many of these are found in "Salsatina", a local club on Kokusaidori that caters to everything that is low and base. (The author of this article checked it out many times to be sure). Hispanic marines are generally the most intellectually gifted of the invaders, gifting you with endless chatter and many wise words on the cultural aspects of the surrounding islands.

[edit] White American Marines

These guys just love their time in Okinawa. The 3 years they spend here, getting kicked out of clubs for 'being a marine', are part of what they feel is an essential element in their training as an armed killer. Usually found getting shit drunk in a bar on Kokusaidori via the cruel accompaniment of Irish students, these guys just wish they could stay longer.

[edit] Japanese American Marine

Only one Japanese American was stationed in Okinawa, and holy fuck!, was this guy out of place or what? And it wasn't because he wasn't on Kokusaidori. Avoid like the plague.

[edit] NOVA Teachers

The scourge of mainland Japan. Most NOVA teachers find an ugly girlfriend, then leave, and come back to Japan because no-one at home likes them. Okinawan NOVA teachers are a rarer breed - that which have known popularity in their lives at some point. Therefore, a drink with a NOVA teacher on Kokusaidori in Naha will usually not be the boredom it would be in Hiratsuka, for example.

[edit] Students

Education in Okinawa is at the bottom of the Japanese pile so don't expect much from students. But on the plus side Okinawan high school girls wear the shortest skirts in Japan and Okinawan high school boys grow the longest bangs with traditional Japanese pompadour hair style, present mainland highschool students have never seen.
