“Leo Laporte... he invented podcasts didn't he?”
“Motha Fucka!”
Leo Laporte is a technology journalist, TV/Radio/Podcast host and ex-Hustler editor (and model) who specializes in hacking, phreaking, warez, and just about everything else with some type of connection to technology. He also ran Apple Computers as CEO for several years under the moniker Gilbert Amelio. He is most well known because of his association with TechTV and the leadership role he has taken in the G4-TechTV War.
He is also credited with founding the TWiT Army in attempt to build up guerrilla forces to turn the tides in the Guatemalan civil war.
Leo has also written several books, including Leo Laporte's guide to Kazaa, DeCSS in a Nutshell, Hacking the Planet, How to hack your iPod with linux so only TWiT can be played and the yearly All your Base Nerd/Geek Almanac. He has a degree in Chinese Food from the Iron Chef Institute, and lives with his wife, kids, 42 pygmy goats, and 298 butt-ugly Hawaiian shirts in the tiny town of Nowhere, CA (Population: Tire).
Currently, he hosts the wildly popular Call for Help from TechTV's current headquarters in Canadian exile, as well as the above-mentioned "Pir8 with DevNull". He also is head of all TechTV and TWiT guerrilla forces in the G4-TechTV War.
Laporte has recently been involved in a argument involving John C. Dvorak over who originated the creation of many illegal dialers in the 1990's. Laporte claims he did after a period of unemployment after the end of Television program "The Site". Dvorak claimed on his blog that it was actually him in yet another pathetic attempt at gaining attention.
[edit] Over the years
Leo began his life in technology when he purchased his first computer, a vintage ENIAC 3000-series, off of eBay for $420 in 1980. He wrote several programs for it, including a CP/M emulator (which was slow but worked), a Pacman clone, Dance Dance Revolution, A BitTorrent client and a WarGames dialer so that he could access pirate ENIAC BBSs. In 1984, he upgraded to the original Macintosh, an upgrade so big that he needed to get new software for his system. He ended up writing several computer programs during the 1980s, including:
- Unplug'N'Pray
- The Interweb
- Pong
- The Revenge of the Screen Saver (the very first screen saver, preceding After Dark by a few years)
- Alcohol 10% (for copying floppy disks)
- QDial (the above-mentioned WarGames dialer, but for the Mac and in FULL COLOR)
- MacArc (which saves all your files in case of a flood)
- Words Count (counts how many versions of Word you have)
- 971 (the #1 Mac hacking tool)
- Skyp (predecessor to Skype)
He also ran MacQueue, the world's only Mac pirate BBS, for some time in the 1980s until MacQueue was bought by AOL. In 1990, he began a radio show called "iLaporte with Steve Wozniak" which quickly became popular worldwide - except in Zimbabwe, where it was banned due to jokes Laporte cracked about Robert Mugabe. Eventually, this led to the TV show The Site and the TechTV network. On TechTV, he hosted The Screen Savers along with Call for Help, and he even temporally hosted Battle For The Mountain which was also on the TechTV network owned by ziff davis. leo descided to throw out his contract for hosting the screen savers he quoted when his canceling "i am gettin 2 old for dis show and i am now focusing to hosting call for help". over the years Tech TV got bankruped and decided to cancel call for help. Ziff Davis transfer the "Tech Tv" channel ownership to "Vulcan Ventures", The New Owner of "Tech TV" revamped the name and it now named "G4 Tech TV", the new owners also have a Canadian channel for G4. Laporte was so upset on the cancelling og call for help, then Rogers Canada called him up to do call for help in canada on G4 tech TV Canada also aired in Australia, the show then resumed in canada ans in Australia. over the years laporte tried to bring call for help in the united States but he failed, then in january 2007 he Revamped the show (and gived it a new name) "The Lab With Leo Laporte", it covers almost the same contend as "call for help does" but a new feature was on the Lab, how to pirate movies. The show was subsequently cancelled.
In 1996 Leo invented the USB port.
In 1998 Leo started the show he really did not want to called "call for help", it covers how to hacking stuff and people callin etc. it aired on Tech TV
In 2004, he lobbied successfully in the U.S. Congress to overturn a law banning bulk exportation of Hawaiian clothing to Canada.
He is often mistaken for Dennis DeYoung of Styx. When asked to sing Mr. Roboto, he often hurls one of his many books at the unsuspecting person and then has the person disemboweled by one of the many ninjas in the TWiT Army with a mac keyboard.
In 2006 has stated that he vows to destroy all free and open source software to make sure macs and apple take over the world using his propaganda machine Twit.tv.
In February 2007 the magic know-it-all unicorn Dane Golden, and C.O.L.L.E.E.N. (A failed NASA experiment), and Leo staged a violent uprising against Twitter for trademark infringement. Twitter won the battle after it's CEO, Evan Williams, started describing his favorite breakfast foods in great detail, causing the invading TWiT army to not care anymore. Ev allowed Leo to live as long as he mentions Twitter at least 7.46 times per minute of podcast he produces.
In March 2007 killed Chris DiBona in order to silence his message of freedom. Rest In Peace Chris DiBona October 1971 - March 2007
Persistent rumors of Star Trek abuse over the years has forced many of his closest supporters to insist "No, he really is that excited without drugs."
Declared his love for Adam Curry on TWiT episode 160.
Leo does not mention the Regional Northern California Emmy Award he received for playing CGI character Dev Null on the MSNBC show 'The Site', except for November 2006, when he mentions it on the netcast This Week In Tech, episode 77, time index 0:21:24. Now that he has found his Emmy from the depths of his garage, he now proudly displays it on a shelf behind his broadcast desk at the TWiT Cottage in Petaluma, California. On TWiT Episode 177, Levar Burton notices the Emmy and has a conversation with Leo about it, time index 0:15:45 - 0:16:10. Levar successfully distracts Leo from the question of Levar's support of new media versus film media by getting him to talk about his Emmy.
