JPEG (JPG), first discovered by Jay Peg, is an acronym for Jarringly Pixelated, Erroneous Graphics, and is, surprisingly, a picture format used all over the World Wide Pog. This is apparently because it offers fast download times, and pornography junkies will take anything. This format was cutting edge back when the cutting edge was a blunt rock.
[edit] JPEG License
This license grants the user the following rights, or freedoms.
- The freedom to upload high-quality pictures that don't take $# !@%*ing minutes to load like .BMP or .TGA.
- The freedom to study any boobs that may appear on a .JPG at any time.
- The freedom to sell/trade for crack/plagarize/butcher/edit copies of a .JPG.
- The freedom to cause pople all over the wurld to lol and spit their coffee all over their keyboard and/or monitor at a humourous picture.
[edit] JPEG Specification
Less technically inclined readers may wish to skip this part, as it discusses the engineering assumptions made to design the JPEG/JFIF algorithms.
JPEG is, first and foremost, designed with the assumption that all images are made up of 8x8-pixel squares, so constructing and displaying the format on this basis will not be noticable. The JPEG format is also without the design specification that it not play havoc with sharp edges, or any image in general that has any discernable shapes at all. Also, JPEG was designed with the assumption that the human eye is poor at distinguishing brightnesses, delta brightness, hue, and changes in hue. Finally, JPEG is constructed on the optimizing assumption that everyone on the planet is either blind or on heroin.
[edit] Competition
The JPEG format is rivalled in lossy compression only by the nil format (extension .NIL).
