I was wondering what the experience of editing here is like for an IP, and what would encourage them to join and stick around. At the moment an IP, when making their first edits, sees the following:

In no places do they see anything saying what is good about joining. They say what is bad about not joining, but even then it's a case of "You can't do that" or "We can see your IP". Once they've joined we welcome them, of course, but if they don't, and they choose to make an edit, then often it will be deleted or reverted or undone, often with an explanation in the edit summary, which they may not even know how to see.

So I was wondering what ideas anyone had, if anything, on what we could do to make the site more welcoming to non-members?                               Puppy's talk page03:38 22 Apr

They need a message to come up encouraging signing up like wikipedia does. ~Sir Frosty (Talk to me!) Icons-flag-au 03:45, April 22, 2012 (UTC)
Maybe something like "Everyone here was where you are right now. New, scared, wetting your pants wondering if you are a good writer or if you will be accepted by an established community. You know what? Fuck all that! One of our guys here, Funnybony, says this place is a playground for adults. And kids as young as 5 young as 14 write here and are only spanked at the parties. So if you feel like joining, the world is your oyster. And Uncyclopedia is a part of the oyster, the gooey part, on the inside, where the brain is. Welcome!!!!" Aleister 14:57 22-4-'12
We should steal code from one of those porn sites with a million pup ups, and make a million pup ups about joining. -- Brigadier General Sir Zombiebaron 15:02, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm... No "minor edit" thing either. Is there some way to possibly add that? --Pwn head Sir Xam Ralco the Mediocre 21:13, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

I think puppy hit the nail on the head about this. By going over everything a new user sees (menus, templates, messages, the guide) and reading it through the eyes of a new user we can make thing a lot more friendly while still emphasising that we want good and funny writing. Ali's suggestion is good imho. Openly welcoming them, through humour, while still warning them not to add fart jokes to good articles is a great idea. Could we consider making the templates a little warmer as well, without dumbing down the message? --ShabiDOO 21:47, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Hey. Sorry I'm a little late in joining the discussion. We should seriously consider making our site more welcoming to unregistered users. You see, that's the issue with protecting every featured article. Some IPs will be responsible enough (such as the one at to take good care of these pages and could even have suggestions for adding jokes or correcting grammars. --Qzekrom sig trans This has been an automated message by Cute Zekrom (talk) 21:38, May 1, 2012 (UTC)

You know...

I once tried going undercover as an I.P. but the power of anonymity went to my head and I became a troll. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Puppy is a better person than I am. It's Mrthejazz... a case not yet solved. 03:25, May 2, 2012 (UTC)

Okay. Yeah, sometimes I log out to vandalize my userpage just for the hell of it. --Qzekrom sig trans This has been an automated message by Cute Zekrom (talk) 21:39, May 5, 2012 (UTC)
