Forgive me for being so retarded, but how do I determine the copyright status of an image I'd like to upload? --Optimuschris 20:14, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Just post it as fair use. We aren't very specific on copyright status, as its all really covered by fair use and parody and such. --Lieutenant THEDUDEMAN Dude ... Totally UOTM KUN GotA F@H 20:18, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks for the quick reply. If you ever need anything like an organ or a small asian child, please don't hesitate to ask. --Optimuschris 20:22, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

And now, to answer your question (hopefully)

If you found it on the internets, it's probably copyright. If you can't prove that it's not copyright, assume that it is. Copyright pics should be uploaded as fair use ("copyright violation protected under parody").

If you stole it from Wikipedia, their pics should already have info on their status. This, for example is copyright expired, and should be uploaded as such ("Released into the public domain by...").

If it's really old, like a picture of Hitler, its copyright has expired ("Released into the public domain by..."). Note that some companies treat pictures of old things as copyright (a picture of the painting of Mona Lisa bought in the Louvre's giftshop, for example, probably has a copyright on the back. Ford, meanwhile, thinks that when someone takes a picture of a Ford, that the picture's copyright belongs to Ford, which is B.S.). Upload as fair use ("copyright violation protected under parody"), just to be safe.

If you made it yourself (you took a picture of something, you drew it, etc) it's your copyright, unless you choose to release it as one of the CC options (and would be uploaded either as CC or fair use).

I hope this answers your question. I'm somewhat of an expert on these matters. By that, I mean that I am completely unqualified and, as such, cannot be held responsible for any injuries, deaths or chaos that result from whateveritwas that I just said. Well, thank you my good friend. By good friend, I of course mean complete stranger who nevertheless took the time to help me. Please find enclosed 5 (five) U.S. dollars and an obligatory euroipods reference. --Optimuschris 23:54, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
No problem. If there's one thing I do it's help, eventually. Sir Modusoperandi Boinc! 00:12, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
