Alright, after seeing the other thread, I've decided to do 4 categories again, but I'm looking to you guys (God knows why) for input as to exactly what the 4 categories should be. We've got the old standbyes:

Best Article
Best Rewrite
Best Illustrated
Best Noob Article

And we have some new ideas

Best Alternate Namespace Article
Best Voice Article
Best First Person Article
Best Encyclopedic
Best Article About a Historical Event (If you like the choice, provide some ideas for historical events too, so I don't have to dream them up myself)
Best Whateveryoucanmakeup

I, personally, would like to see Best Noob replaced with another option, because I don't feel that the overall quality in that category is necessarily worth the expenditure. But what the hell do I know, that's why I'm putting up to you guys. Should Best Noob stay? Ideally, I would have went with 5 categories, but so far we're sitting at 10 judges, and at 3 a category, that would leave us 2 short, which isn't that bad. I can probably browbeat at least one or two other people into judging, and I can always do one myself if need be. I'd like some input on this because ideally I want to get the categories sorted out and the judges selected this weekend, so we can get the writing portion of the contest started shortly. And remember, don't starting writing yet, or else you'll be disqualified and we'll have to send someone after you. Someone like...Braydie. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 03:09, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Talk Amongst Yourselves

I say we stick with Best Article, Best Rewrite, and Best Noob Article, but with the 4th spot we now use Best Article Made in an Alternate Namespace. --Littleboyonly TKFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK Oldmanonly 03:11, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

The only thing with that is, the Potatochopping crowd fought hard for Best Illustrated, and I'm sure they'll be loth to give it up. Plus, I think that the overall quality of Best Illustrated is higher, generally, then Best Noob. But I really do like the alternate namespace idea, I think it would add some creativity. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 03:13, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Maybe we should shake things up a bit... Four Categories with the winner receiving $25 and then a "Best Potatoshopped Image" contest, with the winner getting $10 or $15 or whatever... Tompkinssig Smallturtle t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 19:32, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, my original idea was to do 5 categories and split the money that way, but so far we've got judges for 4 articles, and so that seems to be what we're gonna go with. The only problem with adding something else is finding more judges. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 20:06, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Not to tell you how to do your job or anything, but I know last time Brad asked people, instead of just asking for volunteers, and pretty much everyone agreed. I'm sure there are still many capable judges out there that don't even know PLS is coming up. That's true. Here's what I'll do: Set up 5 Categories, including Best Article, Best Rewrite, Best Noob Article, Best Illustrated article, and one my category to be announced at a later date (like tommorow). All I really need to do then is round up 3 or 4 more judges, which shouldn't be too hard, and then we can call it even. A lot of people still seem to like Best Noob Article, so I guess we'll keep that, and this way we'll get a new category in, to inject some new blood into this ma. Thus spake ENeGMA. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 22:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

I like Best Encyclopedic article, because dry humor is often the best, but it's not as creative as best alternative namespace, so what do I know? Also, please stop browbeating me. I think I may have had a couple concussions already.--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 03:14, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Your prescience is astounding :) The thing is though, you get a lot of plain 'ole Encyclopedic articles for the other categories, generally. Best Rewrite and Best Article have plenty of doctinaire Uncyc articles. Heck, I even made one last time for Best Rewrite: Civil War (*cough*shamelessplug*cough*). I like the style, but I'm not sure it needs its own section, which really could be better used. Also, come onto IRC if you can atm. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 03:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Why are we narrowing things down so much? Can't the current four categories be of any namespace, be about historical events, be in first-person, or be encyclopedic? Why are we suggesting such specific categories? That's absolutely absurd. I like the Best Voice Article, but every other suggestion is just ridiculous. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 06:54, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, they can, but the point about picking a limited category is to test someone's creativity in a specific way. It could be said that 'Best Article' is overly broad, and that it really isn't fair to compare articles so different from one another. Limiting one category I think would give writer's an oppurtunity to compete against each other on a much fairer plane. Best article about the Punic Wars, for example, would be a very specific, amusing test for writers. Or at least it would be for me. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 13:55, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Right, but it's like the VFH. Articles of any namespace and topic can be featured. The "Best Article" category is meant to be broad. In the last PLS, there were actually quite a few historically themed articles, and two HowTos submitted (one of them being mine). Being specific about namespaces and topics is stupid, period. The only exception would be if we had a "Best UnNews" category, which I am for. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 18:39, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

I like some of them, but not better than best n00b article. Maybe the quality is lower, but it's a great encouragement to n00bs (which we don't do enough of sometimes!) and probably the only thing they can win - I'm not sure I'd have bothered entering last time if I hadn't been (just) eligible for n00bdom. --Strange (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 09:50, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, the thing is, the articles that usually Best Noob are always very good. When I judged it, Shandon and Procopius were in 'Best Noob'. And they cleaned house, because they're good writers. Shandon won best noob and Procopius actually won Best Article. So in their case, it didn't really make much sense for them to compete with the rest of the noobs; it was men against boys, as it were. And to be brutally, aside from their articles, it was low quality. So what we end up doing is either: a; rewarding someone who's good enough to compete in other categories, which is unfair or b; rewarding someone who just isn't that good. But that's just my take. If you guys really want Best Noob to stay, It'll stay, I just think there's a lot of potential here. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 13:55, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Hmm... very good point. Then again, giving the n00bs some false hope is still vaguely encouraging I suppose.  :-) --Strange (but) Untrue  Whhhy?Whut? How? *Back from the dead* 17:22, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

If I chose the categories, they would be: Best Article, Best Rewrite, Best Illustrated, Best Noob Article, Best Voice Article, Best Expansion, Best Article About a Historical Event, & Best Biography. --General Insineratehymn 22:08, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

I personally wouldn't judge or enter the PLS if that were the case. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 22:22, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
In fact, your very presence on this earth has caused me to second guess all that I once believed in. Tompkinssig Smallturtle t o m p k i n s  blah. ﺞوﻦ וףה ՃՄ ண்ஸ ފއހ วอฏม +տ trade websites 01:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

I say we'll probably need to vote on categories soon. Perhaps we should say Best Article and Best Rewrite are automatically in, and then we pick the top two or three from the votes. Icons-flag-au Sir Cs1987 UOTM. t. c 03:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

It has already been decided. See the PLS. --Hotadmin4u69 [TALK] 03:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Damn. Why the hell do I always miss out on finding exactly when the PLS starts? Icons-flag-au Sir Cs1987 UOTM. t. c 03:31, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Have no fear, your vote is here: Forum:Official PLS Category Vote - Vote Now or Forever Hold Your Peace I wasn't actually going to do a vote, but your post made me realize people expect one, so there you guys go. Say it loud, you're enfranchised and proud. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 03:33, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
