In what can only be seen as a shameful attempt to imitate the Onion, I think we should have a section for Op/Ed type pieces. Maybe as part of UnNews (though that would take it outside of the Wikipedia style), or maybe as a separate namespace with it's own portal. I'm just proposing this because the type of things I feel writing nowadays just don't fit with the general mold of an Uncyclopedia article. I might, for example, want to write about the Iraq War, but we already have articles on that topic, many of them and another article that was just a faux-opinion piece floating out in the main namespace would, I think, lack necessary context. We could even, if we had the direction and dedication, do something like a daily or weekly paper, with new content every day on a portal page similar to UnNews. But I don't know if that would have any support.

So anyway, these are just some ideas I've been batting around as of late, because I think there could be potential in satirical opinion pieces, satirical letters to the editor, etc. And if we somehow tied all this content together with some of the better UnNews stories, we might have something really special. Perhaps, if there is support for it, we could retool the UnNews page to feature top UnNews stories, top editorial articles, and top letters to the editor. But that would, in a very real sense, be us imitating the Onion, which I don't exactly want, even though I do. I don't know. Tell me if you think any of this has any potential. I could come up some article ideas to demonstrate this, if you'd like. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 01:13, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

So you want us to start writing letters to the editors of UnNews articles? --General Insineratehymn 01:15, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Potentially. I didn't actually think of that, but that might be a good idea. I meant just random letter to the editor about nothing in particular. See, I live in the middle of no where, which means we have shitty rural newspapers, which means we have dumbasses for editors and dumbasses who write letters to those editors. It's sort of funny, I think, listening to some idiot prattle on about a political decision they have no knowledge of, or spout some home-spun nonsense advice about how the "the kids today" are going to hell. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 01:21, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Would we use appropriate identities for the pieces? Like "I'm Sick Of This Fucking Mooing" by Gerald Brown, Farmer. -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 01:25, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
See, my original inspiration for this kick was Herbert Kornfeld from the Onion (whom I highly recommend you read: http://www.theonion.com/content/columnists/view/kornfeld ). But yeah, potentially, recurring characters have a higher humor potential, though they can get driven into the ground. See a farmer, for example, has all kinds of situations he can get involved in. But you could also do one-off opinion pieces that deal with topical subjects, or whatever. Definitely, attaching appropriate character identities would make it funnier. I think that with this idea, there is good potential for a "straight man-funny man" kind of thing. Like, all the writers will be writing something along the lines of say, "Can't sleep due to the voices in my head", telling about what the voices say and whatnot. Meanwhile, the editor will be genuinely trying to help the person, and playing the straight guy. I also think there could be a series of letters for each page, almost like one of those books written in all letters. Also, I can't believe I didn't make a gay joke about the "straight man" thing. Um, I don't know if you've ever read a Letters to the Editor section, but the editor usually doesn't write back. Unless it's something along the lines of We sincerely apologize for describing the Senator as a male. It is our mistake. -- Tinymooose.gif » Sir Savethemooses Grand Commanding Officer ... holla atcha boy» 00:54, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps you should Ask Cthulhu? Though, a similar idea could work. Perhaps as a Dear Abby-esque type thing. Which... is also similar to the Ask Cthulhu thing. I'm tired. Someone go fetch me a button, a piece of sandpaper, one dozen weasels, and a box of cyanide. --PantsMacKenzie 07:38, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
What do you plan to do with those things? --Starnestommy (TalkContribsFFSWP) 07:42, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
...Take over the world!! MUAHAHAHAHHA HAHHHAHHAHAHA HAHAA Hahaha... hahah. hah. ha. ha... yeah. --PantsMacKenzie 07:45, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Mmm. I'm not talking about an advice column, I'm talking about an Op/Ed page. Ask Ctuhulu already has the Dear Abby stuff down, what I mean is a series of articles, liked you'd see in your paper, only satirical, of course. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 21:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Ya, I guess maybe I was thinking more along the lines of an advice column. But either way, it could still be pretty funny. P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 21:45, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Good idea. A scathing denunciation of Muslim flower arrangements by Miss Desire Tarmac, followed by a rebuttal from concerned reader Yousef B. Sili who, as a professional begonia, is morbidly offended by discrimination against Muslim blossoms. Accusations of payola from paving companies, sarcasm flowing like cheap beer...I can smell the blood just thinking about it. ----OEJ 01:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Exactly. Or an article by a forlorn teen lamenting N*SYNC's demise. Are they really gone for good? Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 03:11, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

This is a great idea. My brain is percolating sinister things, hoping to come up with something decently UnNew-worthy. Cheers to User:ENeGMA!!! By the way, [this one] is great too. Zimbuddha Rev. Zim (Talk) Get saved! 17:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

That's my personal favorite too. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 17:46, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

This thought had crossed my mind once or twice. The biggest problem I see is that I don't know how we would implement it. It could help us clutter up the sidebar more, or help us clutter underneath the "new stories" section, I'm not sure which. Ideas?--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 21:30, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

What do you think of this idea? User:ENeGMA/UnNews is a rough mock-up of something that could work. What do you think? Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 01:23, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Also, User:Ljlego/UnOpinionated:Tired of Politics is my take on it (not quite finished, but enough to get the idea. About images, should they be required? It seems rather against what OpEd is.-Sir Ljlego, GUN VFH FIYC WotM SG WHotM PWotM AotM EGAEDM ANotM + (Talk) 01:58, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Here's my first go. User:ENeGMA/Stopping_Terror_at_Home With time we could even have regular articles that tow a certain editorial line, or that focus on different topics. Sky's the limit. Sir ENeGMA (talk) GUN WotM PLS 02:01, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

I think the top-left-hand corner is the right place to put this, and we could probably rework that section into op/ed, advice column, and "other".--<<Bradmonogram.png>> 02:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Since images seem impractical for something like this, maybe we could format these to look more....lettery. I don't really know how one would go about that(maybe something that uses lots of italics), but it's just a thought. P.M., WotM, & GUN, Sir Led Balloon Baloon(Tick Tock) (Contribs) 03:03, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Personally I would think we could simply copy the "Opinions" format used by many newspapers: three or four editorial pieces of 500 words or so, and a selection of letters of 200 words each. No pics, but maybe some editorial cartoons. (Keep it short and snappy.) The link could be on UnNews if we don't want to clutter up the mainpage. I would favor putting a short summary and link under the "Anniversaries" section, just like the UnNews and Did You Know sections. ----OEJ 13:32, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
