Forums: Index > Village Dump > Fake Vector JS released

So you may have noticed that I've been working on yet another major coding project. I totally spammed recent changes. Anyway, I now present to you User:Llwy-ar-lawr/fakevectorjs.css:[1] a JavaScript counterpart to the original CSS-only Fake Vector. This brings the interface much closer to real Vector, though it still doesn't replicate it exactly. I've been meaning to write it for months but only recently learned how to do so.[2] I haven't worked out all the issues, but it seems to be sufficiently functional in all my browsers, and as with the CSS it will never be really "done".

Some features:

  • tabs in the Vector arrangement, with missing ones added
  • dropdown for the delete, move and protect links
  • full set of MediaWiki tooltips and access keys
  • no box on user pages, user talk pages and contributions with edit count and avatar -- just the regular title
  • edit tools underneath the edit box instead of on the right
  • sidebar more closely resembling the old one

But that's not all. I have also created User:Llwy-ar-lawr/fakevector1.css, which is an alternative version of Fake Vector that actually looks like Wikipedia as seen by readers. Serif headers etc. This should probably be the version we recommend first on Skin Choice.

To try out Fake Vector JS, add importScript("User:Llwy-ar-lawr/fakevectorjs.css"); to your common.js. It relies on Fake Vector (either version) being present to work, but both versions work fine without it. Of course you won't be able to use it if you have JavaScript disabled, but Wikia/Oasis itself is so chock-full of it that it probably wouldn't be working right anyway.

Here are screenshots of a page and the edit form with the existing Fake Vector:

Here are screenshots with "fakevector1":

Unlike the CSS, unfortunately, it won't work on other wikis or if your user language isn't English. I can probably fix the first part at some point, but the second will be harder.

  1. Note the title. I can't create User:Llwy-ar-lawr/fakevector.js. It was originally called User:Llwy-ar-lawr/fakevectorjs (I was going to fully protect it), but I don't know if we'd get in trouble for using an "insecure" JavaScript page.
  2. That is, I knew next to nothing about JavaScript until less than three weeks ago, I'm less than halfway through the W3C tutorial, and I don't entirely know what I'm doing.

If you can get this site looking more like Wikipedia for visitors without breaking either the rules of Wikia or Physics, that would be cool. A.L.???| doesn't remember Lyrithya! 02:31, October 29, 2018 (UTC)
I partially restored the serif headers. I discovered after the incident in July that they'd been entirely removed, which doesn't make any sense because you're allowed to modify the content area. The title is still sans-serif, but first and second-level headers inside the content area have the Vector font stack. I also fixed the code for image thumbnails because I'd made them resemble the wrong version of Vector. Maintenance work will continue as necessary. Sorry I can't do anything really drastic. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr talkcontribs • 03:28 29 October 2018
Thanks for your amazing work Llwy-ar-lawr. :) --LaurelsRomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 10:40, October 29, 2018 (UTC)
Of course I feel bad that the readers will never get to see this, but if even one person can have this experience, it was worth it. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr talkcontribs • 18:59 30 October 2018

Bug reportEdit

Hi, I found out new empty preview boxes repeatedly appear when clicking the preview button, and it still happens even after I have installed this js. Can you fix it? Thanks in advance.--The Pioneer JP (talk) 05:12, January 16, 2019 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I've been meaning to write up a list of known problems and this is one. At the moment you have to close the existing preview box before opening a new one if you don't want this to happen. I don't know exactly how to fix this, but I'll try and figure something out. Llwy-ar-lawr (alt) (talk) 05:21, January 16, 2019 (UTC)
Fixed. ❦ Llwy-ar-lawr talkcontribs • 21:44 16 January 2019
